Jimmy Herring is pretty good, eh! I am really enjoying Warren's slide on Mountains and the band is amazing. Thanks again Phil (and Couch Tour Captures!)
Mr. Herring has perhaps the most acute case of "needing to be goosed" I've heard. He can coast along in thoroughly average, automatic gear just as happy as ever. But if somebody starts to blow up and blow big, look out. He doesn't get MEAN or competitive, but it's like some new doors and windows open that, apparently, he didn't know he even had. He's always, always working or something, a la Mahavishnu J-Mac, but you gotta drag it out of him. I have (so far) been disappointed in the Herring/Krantz/Landau stuff; the head/solo/solo/solo/head&out format can lead to tired music (witness the snoozefestering McLaughlin/Corea release that won a guilt Grammy).
I am comforted once again, sequestered in the peace I find in this skillfully played music.
It doesn't get any better than these shows - awesome talent having fun - no way to beat that!.
These guys love playing together almost as much as I love listening to them play.
