@@TheChiefSteve thanks bruddah! Our aim for this was to get it over 100k views and we barely squeaked by, but hooray! I've held off on playing the sequel as I know I'm gonna do a deep dive on it 😂
Excellent video. "We are not men. The responsibility is far greater. And you must be better than me." Brought a tear to my eyes. The writing in the game is so good. Much agreed with V1, that sequence of retrieving the Blades of Chaos is one of the best in gaming.
Mimir's line about the World Serpent being sent back in time "even before his own birth" is a really cool detail, given that he is the child of none other than Loki. It's an interesting bit of foreshadowing
I haven't been gaming regularly for like 15 years and ill probably never play these games but these deep dives are incredible. The time, effort, dedication and love that has clearly gone into it is astounding, honestly. You guys are brilliant at what you do. The best channel on RUclips.
Probably my favorite video. The editing is incredible. The commentary is spot on, great insights and Easter eggs. It makes me so incredibly excited for Tuesday night when Ragnarok releases.
There's a quick bit in ragnarok that's non spoiler and easy to miss. As people joked about Mimir facing the back they added a quick conversation with an npc where they ask "heywhy aren't you on the front?" And Kratos says "we tried" and Mimir goes "..there was so...much....viscera".
2:21:40 Lmao I immediately thought of this exact scene as soon as you said the word ‘traveller.’ Some great comedic taste you men have 👏🏻 Just wanted to mention as well, yous completely overlooked the best God of War clone: Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks 👌🏻
I'll just put the comment that I did in the old version here then, seeing this will be the one that will be premiered whenever that may be. Nearly 3 hours?! Hell yeah! This has been the video I have been waiting for ever since I first knew you guys were doing it and I am sure I won't be disappointed. Can't wait to get into Ragnarok next week. I will likely edit this comment once I watch the entire video. EDIT: Just finished watching the whole thing and absolutely loved it. Funny that you guys didn't even mention the multiplayer from God of War Ascension, which just goes to show utterly forgettable it was in that game and I am sure if you ask most people, they would go, "It had multiplayer? Don't remember that!" I liked Ascension and I remember at the time enjoying the final boss battle in that game more than the one in God of War III. Ascension, Ghost of Sparta and God of War 2018 are the only ones in the series I have only played through once and kind of regret not playing through the 2018 game again before Ragnarok hit. Steve and I share the same top 2 games of the last generation in Bloodborne and God of War and think we do have similar tastes in games judging from the games he plays on his Twitch streams. God of War on God Mode, which is the highest difficulty is the most I have ever been angry playing a video game to the point I was actually crying of rage trying to beat the doppelganger part in between the two phases of Ares. I was at university at the time and luckily I was on my own in the flat or else I am sure my flatmates would have gone, "What the hell is wrong with you?" I have finished all of the games on Hard mode, which I think is the right level of challenge for these games and I will be doing the same thing once Ragnarok hits next week (I got the Collector's Edition with the Mjolnir replica etc). Anyway, that is enough rambling. Can of coke to all who were involved making this video (the artwork and animations were sublime) and I look forward to whatever the next deep dive is (Zelda perhaps?)
I'm surprised this wasn't part of the "Making Of" section, but Shad Gaspard provided some motion capture for Kratos in this, which is awesome as a wrestling tie-in nvm. It came up later! Should have had faith
I've never played or seen even one second of game play from any God of War game prior to watching this but damn if I didn't love every minute of this overview!
Just started pissing myself laughing at the Weird Al/Crash Test Dummies reference during the intro!! Literally just got done listening to both songs, not knowing they were gonna be referenced!!! You guys made my day with just that 10 second reference

Absolutely whopper dive lads. Loved seeing all the behind the scenes stuff. I didn’t notice the thing with Freya’s tattoos until my second run through the game. So good! Jeremy Davies put on a stormer as Baldur. Just wanted to mention he was also in Saving Private Ryan, Twister, and Lost! I was happy to hear you give Judge and the writers their flowers too. So well deserved for making the game what it was. Also, that workbench scare in Last of Us 2 is straight out of Dead Space! My all time favourite scare in games because it breaks all the rules and has you looking over your shoulder for the rest of the game!
Just dropping in to say I love your video game retrospectives you guys have been dropping, I’ll watch this one in full once I actually beat GOW hopefully before Ragnarok drops this week.
Great work with the video lads, can of coke! Personal highlights from the game for me: Tyr's room and the conversation that follows it (how in the hell did Echoes of An Old Life not make it into the music highlights), journey to and picking up the blades of chaos and finally... When Kratos learns to let go of his past, that scene nearly had me crying, that hit me right in my core. Such good writing and delivery. An amazing game. Can't wait for Ragnarok!!

Zeus was afraid the cycle of patricide would continue with him being killed by Kratos so what does he do?He proceeds to give Kratos a bunch of reasons to kill him
Awesome deep dive! I'm surprised you guy's didn't talk about the boat captain (from the first and second GoW games) easter egg in the game. You find a treasure map, confirming one of the boat captain's shipmates made it to the Norse lands.
This was an INCREDIBLE Deep Dive Ive NEVER played Gods of War but this Review along with "Last of Us" have truly pushed to actually play them. I LOVE that this deep Dive was sooo Long and sooo indepth But sooo Good! Thank U Easily 10/10
The part where Connor McGregor/Baldur says, "I thought you'd be taller" might be a reference to the fact that Kratos was originally conceived as being a 7 ft tall giant, which I always thought was strange because Kratos never looked tall in any of the games. At first, the original God of War just seemed like an over-the-top action series, but looking back on it, the entire series actually weaves quite an engrossing tale, with some of the best character development in gaming history. I love how Kratos' character in 2018 is such a radical departure, but also makes perfect sense given how Part 3 ended.
Great Video! One thing i'mn surprised you guys didn't talk about was the scene at the end of the game when they throw the ashes Kratos takes his bandages off of his wrists and we can see the scars from the chains and its a moment of him freeing himself from hiding his past sins and letting go of them as he tries to break the cycle to start a new
I'm watching this now, no idea if it'll be brought up after the story part, but Mimir is Scottish because he's from Scotland. Like, in-game. He explains he used to serve a fairy king in a faraway land, so it's very heavily hinted that he is also Robin Goodfellow.
I asked OOC and he veto'd it permanently (as he's great respect for AVGN and doesn't want to poke fun at him) Shame, I think it'd be hilarious and all in good fun.
@@OSW I didn't do game plus as my previous save data seemed to have vanished (I blame my son and all of his fortnite updates) Second time around I did a LOT more side quests as I played through. As last time I mainly stuck to the main plot. So towards the end was a bit overpowered for the main event. But I just marvelled at the story and all the little details I previously missed. Also I'm a long time resident evil mark, playing originals and remakes since the 90s She bought me resident evil 8 recently which I'm now playing and hope to complete before Jesus's birthday!
Castlevania Lords of Shadow is one of my favs, I put it up there with GoW3. Also Darksiders 2 is fantastic. But what a beautiful game (and its sequel surpasses it in every measure besides a bit of menu stuff). The Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, Horizon/Forbidden West, Persona 5, Doom, and the God of War games made this one of my favorite playstation generations.
Man, I'm glad that they liked a lot of these GoW clones. I pretty much agreed with them on all of them. Darksiders, Castlevania: LoS, and Dante's Inferno in particular were huge favorites of mine. 😁
Loved the deep dive, phenomenal work as always guys. Only critique is when V1 says he pussied out and dropped down to easy mode on the first God of War. Some people play on easy just because they don't have the time to keep struggling on harder difficulties. Other than that I'd love to see a Bloodborne deep dive.
Personally my favorite God of War clone is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. The first one, at least. The amount of hours I put into that game 15 years ago is absolutely absurd, and I didn't realize how similar the mechanics were to God of War until I watched this video. The QTE stuff, the fast-paced combat mechanics, collecting crystals to change your lightsaber into different colors (which is strikingly similar in comparison to the way you collect stuff out of chests in God of War), it's actually quite mindblowing to think about. Great watch! And also great listen as well, I listened to it in audio form after watching the video because I thought it would be neat to sleep to lol
If you are playing the new one get the 3D audio headset. It's amazing. You can tell how far and what direction things are in. Can even hear things sneaking up on you. Plus treasure has a chime audio que. You can hear treasure and it helps to know what rooms have hidden puzzles in them. Been rocking 7.1s forever but this new 3d tech blows them out of the water. You can literally hear the world and it should be acknowledged how well it works. 10/10 amazing! Perfect for the new game.
Well hellooooo. Loved your LOU2 and RE2 review so much and have heard good things about this game, bought it so I could enjoy this review. No regrets. Started a fortnight ago. Just completed it.Awesome. Gonna buy a ps3 and get the Collection and play them. Now i get to sit back and enjoy the review. Woop woop
I'd love to have Jay and V1 talk the bollocks about Bloodborne! Would just love to see what nicknames and reactions they'd have to all of the bosses and enemies
1:33:20 the parallels between the olympians/titans and the aesir/jotuns is a running theme in a lot of ancient belief systems (a younger family of gods goes to war with and displaces an older family) and a widely accepted theory says that it's a cultural memory of invasion and conquest of indigenous peoples by the more advanced Indo-Europeans, like the Aryans in India, proto-Germanic people in Scandinavia, the Minoans in Greece. Often the older deities in these stories represent natural forces (the frost and fire giants and the Midgard serpents who causes the tides when he swims) but the new gods are always gods of human concepts and activities (Thor is the god of farming, Odin is the god of rulership, wisdom and poetry, Tyr is the god of war and justice, Freya is the goddess of healing and love) So after more advanced people move into the area with horses, chariots and metalworkingand and the gods the original people used to worship are only remembered as the monsters that the new gods fight in the stories.
Never played a single GOW game. Just never been a fan of hack and slash. But this video was great fun to watch, some parts even making me get emotional! I cant imagine how long time fans felt when he went to get those chain knife weapon.. things. 😅
All of your work is brilliant lads, but these Deep Dives are absolutely incredible. I look forward to your next one. Hopefully, it's a Red Dead Redemption Deep Dive 👀

Finally completed it today so I could finish review excellent game excellent review
Solid review and coincidentally I was already playing God of War 3.
Really good video. Never owned a Playstation but looks worth playing on PC. As for suggestions... Arkham Trilogy?
Well hellooooo. Loved your LOU2 and RE2 review so much and have heard good things about this game, bought it so I could enjoy this review. No regrets. Started a fortnight ago. Just completed it.Awesome. Gonna buy a ps3 and get the Collection and play them. Now i get to sit back and enjoy the review. Woop woop
48:23 Epic test of strength spot!
_Big meaty men liked this_
I'd love to have Jay and V1 talk the bollocks about Bloodborne!
Often the older deities in these stories represent natural forces (the frost and fire giants and the Midgard serpents who causes the tides when he swims) but the new gods are always gods of human concepts and activities (Thor is the god of farming, Odin is the god of rulership, wisdom and poetry, Tyr is the god of war and justice, Freya is the goddess of healing and love)
So after more advanced people move into the area with horses, chariots and metalworkingand and the gods the original people used to worship are only remembered as the monsters that the new gods fight in the stories.
Well I know what I'm falling asleep to for the next couple weeks.
Never played a single GOW game. Just never been a fan of hack and slash. But this video was great fun to watch, some parts even making me get emotional! I cant imagine how long time fans felt when he went to get those chain knife weapon.. things. 😅
Same! And now I want to play this one, and the new one!
My favorite game series(even though Ive only done GOW, GOW2 and Dad of War) but God(Dad) of War 2018 is my favorite game of all time I think.
I got chills when you dudes got to the part where Kratos went and got his blades. That moment was amazing.
All of your work is brilliant lads, but these Deep Dives are absolutely incredible. I look forward to your next one.
Hopefully, it's a Red Dead Redemption Deep Dive 👀
Nice work lads! A fallout 3 or new vegas deep dive would be wild
I actually went to play from the start with GoW1 on PSN streaming. I got to the balance beam bit on the ship at the very start and called it a day
God of War, Ascension: Smellness!
