I live in an area with heavy snowfall every year. I bought it for that. That being said, my 09 H3 drives through snow and ice like nothing ive driven before. Its an absolute BEAST in bad weather
Tip for safety focused shoppers - Not only did the H3s get an engine upgrade in 07, the 08-10 have front AND rear side curtain airbags STANDARD. That was VERY important to me as a parent, so I only looked at 08-10s to be sure that feature was there. They also have an additional stability control standard in 08-10, above and beyond what they already had in 06 & 07. Just a tip in case those safety features are important to you.
I am on my 2nd H3, I had a 06 and when GM cut the Hummer I bought a 09 H3. I have absolutely no complaints about the H3, rides great, handles great, very quiet inside and very comfortable. As far as snow goes it can't be beat, period!!! Mine only has 85K on it and I will not get rid of it because there is nothing else on the road I am interested in. Besides I raise Wolves and it is the perfect vehicle to carry them with me!!! Love my Hummer H3!!!
Although a pretty good video, the H3 was NOT built on a modified Colorado chassis. That's a common misconception, but there is nothing that the 2 share other than the 5 cylinder engine. As for off road capabilities; one of the main design criteria when GM was developing the H3 was that it could conquer the Rubicon Trail in stock form. It was also designed to accept up to 35" tires with no modifications necessary.
we own a 2007 H3 with over 400k on it. still runs like new. as for the ride i would humbly disagree with your synopsis. despite the "short" wheelbase both city and hwy ride performance are great. the weight and stability combine to make it a comfortable drive, feeling in control. the other day when we got some snow we were able to say " finally, some good weather"....lol.
My grandma has had an h3 for almost 18 years. 173k+ miles, the biggest problem was a leaky valve. Also, in the deep ice, all the cars were on the side of the road from sliding and it was just plowing through 😅
We have had our 2008 H3 since 2009. Its rocking 130,000 miles with no major issues. My ulitmate goal is electrification IF, the straight 5 ever dies. I want my H3 to outlive its meger expectations.
Mine is the pass lock sensor. I keep meaning to get it fixed, yet it hasn't been an enormous problem. We have another backup vehicle we use mostly. That pass lock sucks though
I have a 2010, Right Hand Drive, 5.3 v8, assembled here in South Africa at the Port Elizabeth GM Plant. It is awesome off-road with the front and rear lockers as well as the 4:10 transfer case. This, apart from SFA articulation, puts it into Rubicon territory in terms of off-road performance. On road, it is smooth and direct in terms of handling, like a large saloon car, which inspires confidence. The vehicle in the test appears to have had the front raised, which can be done by adjusting the torsion bars, delivering an additional 2 inches. However, this is known to make the vehicle a little more skittish on-road and at speed. It can also place more strain on the front drive components like the CV joints. Very nice review.
I have one its horrible on gas. Fun to drive but you really want to have one before you buy one. Ive always wanted one. But sometimes I wanna drive it off a cliff. Definitely best for offroad use
I feel the h3 drives pretty smooth n gives a solid n plush feel on the highway. Only drawback is that its slow and has engine heating issues. Other than that its great.
It's not that the engine has overheating issues, it's the poorly designed radiators that's the issue. I upgraded mine as soon as I got my H3. Haven't had any issues so far.
I just wanna say - do not believe the city numbers. The mpg is way lower than that. Highway mpg under good conditions is 17 and you can get it to 18 if you don’t move your foot from the pedal, press brakes, use premium gas, etc. Tuning it will only improve mpg by 1 or 2, maybe 3 if all conditions are working out for you. If all you do is city driving, or your highways are crowded, the gas prices are really gonna get to you.
Would an H3 make a good first vehicle to be going to work & back.? ( 11 miles down the road). Came across a 2006 H3 with very decent total mileage and want to know before I commit to a purchase
Just watched this review.(very good) Because I'm doing some research on the H3 for my teenage son. We are planning on buy him something for his 16th birthday. And he has said he likes the H3. I think it will be a good inexpensive vehicle for him. That will take all the bumps and brushes that first time drivers tend to put on their vehicles.......lol. But my question is. With the H3 being pretty old now. Do you think that it's a good reliable vehicle?
It shares a lot of parts with other GM trucks which are pretty reliable, so I'd say yes, they're reliable. But like every other car, you need to keep up with maintenance.
I've never had a problem with visibility. Same with drivability on roads. That was one of the reasons I rebought it, because it the ride is so smooth. I don't know WTF this guys idea of anything is? Is he use to reviewing Bentleys and S class Mercedes?
For anyone watching this to help decide whether to buy a h3 or not please read this comment. I daily drove a h3 for 3 years and I’m here to tell you DO NOT BUY ONE! The steering was loose, and I had endless problems with the motor (over heating, excessive vibration, etc). Replaced radiator, thermostat, water pump, fan clutch, motor mounts, steering components, sensors, etc. it was never ending to say the least. It was a rough and loud ride and difficult to see out windows. Seats were uncomfortable after driving for long periods of time and cramped inside. Had bad gas milage and no power. It comes stock with 4 speed transmission so driving above 70mph sucks. It was a 76mph vehicle all day long. I sold it with 220k miles and had never been happier. Now you may think I beat on it and didn’t maintain it, but I was always very thorough on maintenance. The one positive thing I will say is that my H3 would go anywhere and through anything. Very impressive off-road performance, but the wide wheel base made it impossible to keep the truck clean. Any mud puddle or dirt you drove through instantly was applied across the side of your vehicle.

Question: Do you know any frequent problems with the H3's? I've heard about some issues with the front axle, but not quite sure that's true? Any thoughts on that?
Keep up with these great videos! Maybe you can get the chance to make a video with the new Hummer that is supposed to come out this year or next year. That would be an awesome video!
