This was the most surprising of Dean Smith's consecutive Sweet 16 teams. They had a shaky year by UNC standards (Lowest seed they ever had during the streak), but found a way to beat the last great Tubbs Oklahoma team. Lot of people thought this was the year the streak would end
UNC swept Duke 2x that season and beat Georgia Tech and ACC RS Champ, Clemson at home (as obvious). Yet they lost 2x to Maryland (an ACC cellar-dweller) and NC State at home.
One of Coach Smith's "worst" teams... and they still shot 49% from the floor. By comparison, in Roy's time in Chapel Hill, his teams have only shot that well twice, and have never shot over 50%.
Their strength was in their wings and front court. Their weakness was not enough ballhandling and young guards. King was from New York and NYC guards don't shoot as well as guards from other parts of the country. Billy Tubbs played right into Coach Smith's hand by going zone and letting UNC catch their breath. He should've sped the tempo. UNC was throwing the ball all over the place early in the 2nd half
Great memories with this one. I was in 7th grade and at the local Mall, ended up watching this game at the Mall TV store with a bunch of other UNC fans.
The old days of the switch to the finish of another close game. That's why there was very little commentary from Brent and Billy on this particular copy.
I still remember watching that game so nervously while eating Chinese food that I picked up at halftime. And I was chewing on my paper towel the way Jerry Tarkanian chewed on a towel during a close game, it was in shreds by the end of the game. And then in the post game interviews, one of the Oklahoma players said, "I guess you guys are all happy now because the press has been against us from the start." And I thought, "That Billy Tubbs. What an awful attitude to instill in your players" Dean Smith would have rung a player's neck for a remark like that"
William Rogers One of the benefits of the era, IMO. You give a good coach a group of great kids to mold over four years (when declaring early wasn’t as prevalent) and you’d get gems like that team. I also think it’s more satisfying to see teams like that do well. That’s why I liked the 2017 UNC Championship so much. In an era of one and done, it was mostly three and four year guys that started off as a decent players that grew into something special.
Great coaching by Smith. This UNC team had a lot of heart.
Thanks for posting this. I haven't seen this game since it happened live. Coach Smith is forever the man!

Was there. It was amazing to see in person.

My wife and I went out and met the team bus at the Dean Dome after they returned from that game.
Thanks so much for the upload! I've seen the fox shot but never the full game before!
that shot was featured in "Rocky mountain magic" the offical 1990 Ncaa championship video
Good Dean. Old good days. Smokin. Dean
This game essentially ended Billy Tubbs’ prime time coaching career.

Billy Tubbs must've have been amazing coach. This Oklahoma team #1 overall seed. Not a single NBA player out there in heinsight

They're overrated
Skeeter Henry was in the NBA
watch dean running off the court after fox hits the game winner....CLASSIC!
blkprl34 one
I remember Dean Smith said he told Rick Fox during that last timeout, "We only need 2 this time"
This game still leaves a bad taste in my mouth ......
North carolina had three players who ended up winning the NBA championship off this team
If you are a one seed you don't want UNC as your 8th or 9th seed. Look it up...
The team that didn't quit...
They certainly had some great moments, this group!
@@KaiCM1984 Chilcutt and Madden are two of my favorites on this squad. Guys who consistently made winning plays.
This has to be the number 1 seed with least amount of NBA talent.
Don't forget about Skeeter Henry
The ceiling is the roof.go.heels.
I thought this game happened in 1989???
1990
game joined in progress
