Sea Kayaking Wales - Solo Stacks.

  • I've been lucky enough to paddle around The Stacks on many occasions, , and have had some classic days out, and of course some not so classic days out. Strangely, it is often difficult to get the right conditions in 'Summer' whatever that is these days, and then every now and then, everything just falls into place, and it's as easy as falling off a bike. This trip was done, a few days after the School holidays ended, and it was as good as it had been all year, and the tide times were perfect. I pulled my boat out at Parliament House Cave right at the top of the tide, so I didn't have to drag it way up, then struggle getting back...........happy days indeed. Rounding North Stack, the tide had turned, but I just managed to punch through, then enjoy tidal assistance all the way back to Porth Dafarch. I endured flat calm all the way around, even across the wide expanse of Abraham's Bosom, which usually always gets a bit of wind on tide action. The light was absolutely perfect in Annie's Arch, on the return, the Sun being lower in the sky, and bathing the whole of the interior to perfection. The air temperature was perfect also, certainly warm enough in the day, and mild right up until I got to the van. All in all, a very memorable trip, with thoughts of absent friends, and what they were all missing. Let's hope the September can be as good?

    Thank you Frank. My Wife and I retired to Anglesey from Stockport about 18 months ago but I'm disabled and very frustrated about all the places that I can't visit. Your fabulous films take me to the places that I probably will never see.

      Peetmarr60 Well Peet, you've really cheered me up, and I'm honoured that you appreciate what I do, even though you're a Citeh fan, ha ha. I often see people up on the Coastal Paths, and always realise how lucky I am to be able to see it the way I do. Sometimes stop and have the occasional foray up the paths me-self. How are the Natives treating you? I always get along great with the vast majority, but no doubt there'll always be one or two.

    Great video (again). I would have thought Parliament Cave would have been busy on such a nice day - great to have it all to yourself!

      morethan4mph Ah, what I neglected to mention, was that it was a Thursday, and the Schools had just re-opened after the Summer holidays, having said that, I paddle round there quite often, and rarely see more than a few Kayakers, it's always easy to find solitude if you want to.

    Your videos are excellent but I particularly loved the bit where you had the camera probably mounted on your chest at 26 mins. With the arms paddling in view, it made me feel like it was me paddling! I was lifting my knees to maintain balance sitting in my seat. Ha, Ha! Great stuff, thanks.

    Still watching your videos , your so lucky spending all that time on the water . Tremendous views thanks to you, maybe a few paintings inspired by your views. Do you always start a kayaking trip at the start of high tide? lm a novice but love it on the water and seeing the caves in southstack would be a dream .cheers.

      Thanks Martin, starting from Porth Dafarch to do this trip, it is much easier to go with the tide, than paddle against it. So going this way, I would start on the flood tide which runs North on the flood tide for approx. 6 hrs 20mins, then South for 6hrs 20mins. Ideally it would be best to arrive at North Stack as the tide turns, in the video, I was too late, it had started on the ebb, but I just managed to get through. From there it was a free ride all the way back. Obviously, the tide isn't always favourable, and you spend all day paddling into it, but there is much respite to be had in the bays. The tide begins to ebb at North Stack approx 1 hr before High water at Liverpool.

    When are you coming to Canada? Oceans on both sides. Could be cool! Fresh water lakes and yes, white water. See you soon? Note: Winter is not a good time for kayaking in Central and East Coast but we do have many caverns and caves for exploring in summer and early fall if you add in a portage moment. Some groups ice canoe but they are well equipped, in teams and they train. We ice kayak only in the spring on flat water. We imagine we are ice breakers. :) Fun

      ***** Sounds absolutely awesome Donna. We are in the middle of the worst Summer for 30yrs apparently, and anywhere would be preferable at the moment, but Canada would be amazing, I'm sure, but there is the tiny obstacle of the Air fare, ha ha, the West coast is a helluva long way from our house. Billy Conolly did a great series on Canada, and we get Ice road Truckers also. I will take your advice and give the winter a miss, my mate lived there once, and told me of the Ice Storms, and how cold it gets, I'm not getting any younger, and prefer the warmer temps. Summer would be perfect.

    Another brilliant vid thanks. I've just taken up kayaking and your videos are inspirational. Fortunately I live in Cornwall so I can make up for lost time. :-)
    btw where do you get your music from or are you a musician too?

    • @GBPaddling
      @GBPaddling  9 лет назад

      Richard Wells Cornwall eh? Not a bad little spot for Kayaking there Richard, me and Matt did a tiny bit there in 2013, ha ha. Yes you guessed, I do all my own music, have a Boss BR600 recording studio, the stereo mics are awesome, too awesome in fact, and some fucking Knucklehead at the back of my house has 4 dogs, and it's like Battersea Dog's Home at the moment, so it's all on pause at the moment.
