    WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
    Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
    Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
    The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
    We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

    Odin was hung from a tree while speared through the chest for nine days and nights without fear of death just to get the Runes to share with humanity because he had to prove his worthiness to the Runes so they would reveal themselves.
    Jesus died for a long weekend after suffering for just a few hours as a human sacrifice to himself to circumvent rules he created to begin with.
    Odin wins.

      Also, Odin pulled out his eye, to prove to Mimir (who's a Vanir, by the way, not an Aesir) that he was worthy of the knowledge that Mimir would bestow upon him. He sacrificed for this knowledge to be able to serve his people better, not just for fame and fortune. I don't remember any stories of jesus voluntarily mutilating himself for the benefit of his subjects! Hells, we don't even have any good reasons to think that jesus was a real person! Odin on the other hand is well attested in both the poetic eddas and the prose eddas, easily having twice as much evidence for his existence as this jesus joker!

      @Jim Merrilees
      Who said anything about "1 guy claiming ..." Christians don't even have that. All they have is a story, where one character tells a further story about further characters being witnesses. That's a far cry from evidence.
      I mean, if I walked into court and handed the judge a handwritten note saying "I couldn't have killed the deceased, as 500 people saw me in Paris at the time of the murder," does ANYONE honestly think the judge would accept that as evidence? Thus is continues to baffle me, how christians aren't able to differentiate between "unconfirmed stories" and "evidence"...

    • @Raz.C
      @Raz.C 5 лет назад

      @Jim Merrilees
      But "we" don't have his reports/ records/ testimony, or even his claims. Instead, we've got a story, where there's a mention of a guy, several decades after the event (life/ death of Jeebus), telling another story about there being 500 witnesses to some other happenings.
      "Reliable" doesn't even come into the question here. I mean, is Samwise Gamgee a "reliable witness" in regards to the events in Lord of the Rings? We can't call these guys "reliable" because they aren't witnesses; They're just characters in a story.
      Hope that makes what I was trying to say come across a bit clearer.

    Eric and Jamie-- re: Prophecy
    1.) Confuscious said... and it happened. He existed. Therefore, the God of the Bible exists.
    2.) Why didn't the prophecy of the destruction of the city of Tyre IN THE BIBLE happen???? The story actually specifies under what King this would happen and how does the caller explain that the city of Tyre still exists!?!
    3.) I like Matt Dillahunty's comparison of prophecy being fulfilled to ordering a hamburger from a waiter and calling it a fulfilled prophecy when he comes back with my order, exactly the way I asked for it.
    4) Doesn't Jesus tell his disciples he would come back in their lifetime? 2,000 years later and we are STILL waiting!
    5.) Aron Ra also has a very entertaining RUclips video on Failed Prophecy. If you want to brush up on your arguements.

    THANK YOU for finally pointing out that "fulfilled prophecy" in the bible is just as impressive as "fulfilled prophecy" in harry potter. They're both just storybooks, so having one storybook "predict" something that then later happens in that same storybook is ridiculously mundane. It's something that ANY writer or editor can make happen in ANY story. For some reason, theists can't get it through their heads that the bible is a storybook. There's no reason to believe that the storybook is describing a true story in its confused narrative. Like any good storybook, it will sometimes reference real places/ real events/ real people. That doesn't serve as evidence that the narrative is true, otherwise- once again- Harry Potter would be a true story, too!
    Please guys, really stick it to these idiots in the future. Please hammer home the point that the bible is just a STORYBOOK! For any of us to take it more seriously than any other storybook, we need evidence that the story is a true and accurate accounting of events and such evidence can only come from sources other than the storybook itself! If you've communicated this concept effectively this will entirely eliminate any theist trying to start a sentence with "According to the bible/ The bible says/ If the bible it true..." If they come back with "but the bible says..." then you hammer them back with "and harry potter says (for example) that Kings Cross station is in London..." So if we go to London and find a place called Kings Cross station, does that mean that the story of Harry Potter is a true and accurate depiction of events?
    Just keep hitting them over the head with this until they understand; The bible is just another storybook. For ANYONE to take it more seriously than that, we'd need evidence that no one has ever been able to provide, showing that it is more than just a fanciful, make-believe story (with occasional references to real places/ events/ people, as with any good story).

    My prophecy is that Norwich City will beat Manchester City 3 - 2 in the English Football Premier League on Saturday 14th of September 2019. I mean I know I am writing this on September 15th of that year but believe me I made this prophecy this before the event. Just because I don't have the original prophecy written down anywhere or told anyone about it beforehand, I swear to you I did make that prophecy ahead of time. And my prophecy has as much evidence for it as any Bible prophecy that Brandon is claiming here.

      richybambam1995 Again, Harry Potter is a character in a book. The Bible is a book.
      Book - a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers.
      “It’s different people recording history..” No, it’s not. What contemporary writer or sources besides Matthew mention the Walking Dead event in Jerusalem? No Egyptian record exists mentioning Moses or his devastation of Egypt either.
      The ancient egyptians were already keeping records for hundreds of years before the flood and did not seem to notice that their entire civilization was wiped out, or that a flood occurred at all.
      The Djoser Step Pyramid and the Great Pyramid of Cheops were both built hundreds of years before the flood with no evidence of water damage.
      Moses refers to "Palestine" (Ex 15:14). No such name was in use then.
      David took Goliath's head to Jerusalem (1 Sam 17:54). But Jerusalem was not captured until 7 years after David became king (2 Sam 5).
      David paid 600 shekels of gold for the threshing floor (1 Chron21:22-25). But shekels of gold were not yet used in business transactions (this is the only use of the term in the OT).
      Psalm 18:6 mentions the temple, thus cannot be by David.
      Defeat of Sennacherib did not happen at Jerusalem, but at Pelusium, near Egypt, and Jews were not involved, contrary to 2 Kings 19.
      Ninevah was so large it took three days to cross, i.e. about 60 miles (Jonah 3:3-4). Yet it had only 120,000 inhabitants, making a population density of of about 42 people per square mile for a city.
      None of the Gospels are mentioned by early Christians, e.g. Paul, Pope Clement I (97 AD), Justin Martyr (140 AD). The first mention of any Gospel is by Irenaeus (185 AD).
      There is no mountain from which one can see all the kingdoms of the world (Matt 4:8, Luke 4:5).
      Jesus as a historical figure is not mentioned by any contemporary non-Christian writers.
      Matt 2:1 says Jesus was born in the reign of Herod, who died 4 BC. Luke 2:2 says he was born during Quirinus' governorship of Syria, which began 6 AD.
      Thieves were never punished by crucifixion (Matt 27:38, 44).
      No crucifixion would have been performed on the eve of Passover.
      There is no contemporary historical confirmation of darkness covering the earth at the crucifixion (Matt 27:35, Luke 23:44).
      There is no contemporary historical confirmation of the slaughter of the innocents by Herod (Matt 2:16-18). Josephus, whose history contains much criticism of Herod, does not mention it.
      Still want to stick with “different people were recording history”?

    Jesus says, “I am the Good Shepherd.” A shepherd tends his flocks, keeps them safe, leads them to streams of water, counts their heads so that not one is lost. If one has strayed away, the good shepherd will not give up looking until the lost is found again. Call on His Name, the Name of Jesus, the One who has forgiven and redeemed you by His death on the Cross. “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes on Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

      @Sam Bacon Matt 16 was fulfilled on the mountain when Peter, James and John saw the glorified King Messiah transfigured. Just because Jesus wasn't assuming His earthly kingdom of 1,000 years at that time in 33AD doesn't mean they weren't privileged to be the 'some who are standing here' who would see the King they had been waiting for - and the truth and knowledge that Jesus was in fact that One gave them the courage to face their persecutions - 2 unto horrific martyrdom; Matt 24, the other passage often quoted as 'proof' the bible is untrue is a prophecy, the end of which won't see its completion until after the millennium when the new heaven and new earth are created. That passage says 'this generation will not pass away ...' we are the generation (of @ 70 - 80 years' , as indicated in Psalms, or 120 years as indicated in Noah) - the generation time count began with the re-formation of Israel as a nation in 1948 - which began God's prophetic clock after the 70AD destruction of Jerusalem, temple and dispersion of the Jews to all nations. 120 years would be 2068 - i'm not holding my breath for us to make it that long - in fact, it's much more likely that it will be much sooner, since the armies of Ezekiel 38 are already on the Golan Heights, Ps 83 is about to take place - which will subdued the nations, like Palestine, directly bordering Israel, Isaiah 17 will be fulfilled very shortly with the total destruction, already in progress, of Damascus, and the Rapture of the Church, which will pave the way for atheists all over the world to celebrate (briefly) until their forced obedience and worship is demanded of a coming one. But all that may never happen....wise to be prepared, though, I would think. John 3:16 is available now as the most important part of that preparation - if you so desire. Enjoy the evening.

    2 Corinthians 4: 4.
    The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. 6. For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ. 7. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9. persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.
