Fantastic guide for starting out! I found it incredibly helpful. Question: How do you get those diplomacy stones. I know you start with one but how do you earn more? Comment: CRITICAL COMBAT INFORMATION CLARIFICATION - Line of Sight. You mentioned that if there are any intervening units, it will lower your chance to hit your targe. There is a HUGE exception. Your own units that are directly next to your ranged unit do not count. This is absolutely critical because it allows you to strategically position your archers directly behind your defenders. They will benefit from any defensive bonuses and they are really hard to get to without the ability to pass through other units. SUPER effective and very obviously intended to be used that way. I know this is in the tool tip and you did not have time to go over every little detail, but I thought that this was important enough to point out as it affects the usage and effectiveness of all ranged units in the game.
This is a great game, I've been having a blast with it still. The updates have smoothed out a few initial issues, but I've heard the mulitplayer is still a little rough. What's missing here is a bit of a breakdown of the different builds one can go through starting from the faction creation part. Because obviously I'd guess that some starting builds are better for certain things, and to better pursue a certain type of victory (if this is anything like civ and the like), which as a beginner I have no idea about. So I could pick something that looks cool to me but just isn't very good for how I would want to play once I learn a bit about things.

First of all: great tutorial. It is very helpful and i appreciate your effort to make it easy to understand for all of us that are beginning to play this game. I have one question, tho: in the combat, at 1:16:04 you said that if you use "Healing Sap" that has the cost of an Ability Point you cannot move and that you have to decide to use the ability or move. But if the cost is just one Ability Point, shouldn't it possible to use anyway, since the movements take at max two ability points? Maybe i misunderstood that part.
You can move and use it OR only use it unfortunately :( even with full action points, using an ability, unless it's a shaded in blip, will result in the end of that units turn
Great video. So its everything that CIV 6 shouldve been. My friend played civ 6 with me and after about 12 hours, it was so dull. AOW looks like it has developed complex and epic gameplay. Paradox made another good game. Good to see. Thanks Sparty for your great videos!
@@MeldinX2 I wonder why they made planetfall pretty differently, I wonder if it was just because it was the first age of wonders game to be put on console or they wanted to try something mechanically different since sci fi was new for the series, Planetfall was my first entry into the AoW series and people were saying 3 was a lot better and I didn’t think it was much different but after playing 4 a bit it feels so much different and better to me I like both but definitely gotta hand it to 4
Liking this game so far. Lots of customization, deep systems, interesting maps. I do find myself a bit put off by the extreme reliance on status effects, buffs and debuffs in combat. You HAVE to be very aware of the buffs, debuffs and effects that both your army and the enemy work with to be effective. It can be tiring for someone used to Civ or even XCOM style turn-based combat.
Are you planning on running some campaigns on this in the future? I've only seen people play multiplayer on their sponsored videos and I'm more of a singleplayer guy, i want to see how the game works and if there's any significant bugs before actually getting this game
Always my favorite strategy game channel and this video is another excellent example of why. Really informative and I learned a ton watching this. I'm fairly familiar with Civ games and AoE feels like a great fantasy take on that formula and with more advanced combat. I'd still love to see a full combat guide for total noobs like me but this beginner's guide was fantastic.
These tips are helpful for understanding how things are supposed to be working, unfortunatley I haven't goptten to really explore much in the game doing the story scenarios however. I'm playing on normal and every story has been completed in like 40 turns, simply by just sending 2-3 6 stacks of mainly t1 units to wherever the enemy is and just auto-resolving any battles on the way to their cities and then their city without stopping. I guess i need to up the difficulty but I'm worried that the little details in the game are just going to be overlooked due to vastly incompetant AI :/
Currently going through this great video, but I'm confused on some things like production. It doesn't show total accumulations like gold, so is it just a gauge to show how fast you can do things? But I think I heard you say that it can be "banked". I'm playing on the PS5 so my UI is different...
The other scenarios have turn limits for the end game? I am a beginner and the first games I have played I lost because I wasn’t aware or the turn limits( plus i suck but having fun)
So basically total war but more buildings focused than battles, started playing today and I enjoy the development of my empire and also the lord item customization.
Finally got my canablistic hobbits to the pantheon so hopefully this video helps me out with my frostborne orcs and humans (all 3 i mentioned are barbarians by the way) EDIT: while i had the AI on Easy because of the Volcanic Daemon Realm i made and how i still am trying to learn some thing (still combined houndmasters with shamans to win), it wasn't exactly easy especially when you have regenerating infestations on
I'm playing on PS5 and have encountered a few "bugs" or the game just not displaying things correctly: 1) When you do a major or minor race transformation, it does not show up under the active spells. It seems like the active spells are only showing the unit enchantments. 2) Maybe I just haven't found the option, but in terms of the "economic overview" button on the top right corner, it simply doesn't even exist on console. Playing with the a controller is fine, but I just can't seem to bring up the menu. However, when you go into one of your cities and bring up the city menu, and go to the bottom icon to annex a province, it does somewhat show those economic points of interest but it seems way more easy on PC to do so. 3) Another weird UI bug when you annex a province from a workcamp. When you do this, a menu pops up and it covers up the pin of the province. So say you annex a province (from a workcamp) that has a food or lumber tile, a sub menu pops up over it. You can still pick the pin, but you just can't "see" it.
well, I was playing on PS five and also PC. I had a bug on PS five where it kept saying save the game do not turn off constantly and would not go away. Also played on PC had like an hour long game where I was finally getting the hang of it, and learning some thing and building an army and researching upgrades and the game crashed and it didn’t auto save anything really made me angry. I think I will be waiting for a patch before I play this game and commit to it also, if you want to play on PlayStation, we could play together I need somebody to learn with.

I just started playing stellaris and now I’m loving this type of genre
Thanks for the vid. I made indoustrious orcs but ironically i don't know how to manage the industry of my city's.
Ty for the ultimate guide
Great video. So its everything that CIV 6 shouldve been. My friend played civ 6 with me and after about 12 hours, it was so dull. AOW looks like it has developed complex and epic gameplay. Paradox made another good game. Good to see.
Thanks Sparty for your great videos!
Paradox is only the publisher. Triumph Studios is the development team that made the game.
Jump on to my Twitch! We've been using my Cannibal Cats that the community made. Single player only! :) Streaming tomorrow @ 10:00am PST
Pretty sure if you increase the mouse deadzone setting, you'll have an easier time getting to the tooltip box before it disappears.
Let's give it a try!
I just picked up AOW4. I am so addicted.
Thanks. This explains why all my cities hated me. 😂
Have a question, what happens if you a province with both gold and Iron. Does the 1 mine effect benefit them. Great breakdown I've learned a lot.
Thank you... very informative. Are there any other Spartacuses except Italian?
Currently going through this great video, but I'm confused on some things like production. It doesn't show total accumulations like gold, so is it just a gauge to show how fast you can do things? But I think I heard you say that it can be "banked". I'm playing on the PS5 so my UI is different...
The other scenarios have turn limits for the end game? I am a beginner and the first games I have played I lost because I wasn’t aware or the turn limits( plus i suck but having fun)
cheers mate.
Thanks for the video
So basically total war but more buildings focused than battles, started playing today and I enjoy the development of my empire and also the lord item customization.
Finally got my canablistic hobbits to the pantheon so hopefully this video helps me out with my frostborne orcs and humans (all 3 i mentioned are barbarians by the way)
EDIT: while i had the AI on Easy because of the Volcanic Daemon Realm i made and how i still am trying to learn some thing (still combined houndmasters with shamans to win), it wasn't exactly easy especially when you have regenerating infestations on
I don’t see those interface bubbles in the top left upper corners. Is there some setting to be adjusted? Thanks!
lol I did the first mission before watching this and I won in like 30 turns through sheer conquest.
Does the campaign have a proper story like the first three games (not the one in AOW3 because no progress was transferred to the next stage)?
Is the Quick Start the Beginner Scenario? Im finding it a good way to learn and I'm having a good time.
I'm playing on PS5 and have encountered a few "bugs" or the game just not displaying things correctly:
1) When you do a major or minor race transformation, it does not show up under the active spells.
Is it better to just keep creating tier 1 units hoping for their promotion and low upkeep, or to create higher tier units?
How can I use unit deployment location? For example circle of zealotry can be used as unit deployment location, but how?
Can you make barbaric despoiler/fanatical purifier halflings in this game?
Absolutely!!
