      @agony600 I mean, planars can sound awful on tube amplifiers. Though you are correct, that this is often overstated and mostly a scam told to get people to spend exorbitant amounts of money. You should mostly worry about room reflections and good speakers before worrying about things like amplifiers and especially dacs. Of course there is a minimum level you should reach in that these elements aren't introducing any noise, but that can be had for very low prices.

    4:30 "larger driver doesn't move as fast"
    This is not correct. The acoustic output of a driver is dependent on its acceleration. You can work this out using simple newotonian mechanics: pressure = force / area; force = mass * acceleration; acceleration = second derivative of displacement.
    A large driver is not good at high frequencies because of cone breakups. The pistonic motion of the driver is severely compromised due to these breakups, and the resulting modal analysis will show you that those breakup modes will acoustically short circuit (essentially you have an array of dipoles rather than an ideal diaphragm following simple plate theory).
    Larger/multiple voicecoils and stiffer diaphragm materials can mitigate the problem, but a larger driver will also start to beamform at high frequencies.
    PA systems often use midrange (yes, midrange, as in playing at least up to 1 kHz) drive units that can be 10", 12", or even 15" or larger. It all boils down to the design parameters.

    • @LynnXternal
      @LynnXternal 15 дней назад

      A bigger driver is more efficient than a smaller driver because of its hydrodynamic output (as opposed to acoustic output). It more easily moves a larger mass of air in the nearfield, which is where the majority of the system's energy is dissipated

    W371A is *not* a subwoofer, it’s a woofer and is designed to provide greater output when combined with the ones and controlled dispersion down to around 63Hz. This, combined with carefully managed multiple subwoofers should essentially combat all major issues with the room i.e modes and SBIR.

  • @hugevibez
    @hugevibez Месяц назад

    I mean you set the crossover usually at 70-80hz to make the sub disappear, at higher frequencies directionality comes in to play. You're not entirely wrong on driver size, the SPL you get from smaller drivers is just not enough to properly serve the sub bass regio. A lot of sub-bass immersion comes from physically feeling vibrations, rather than hearing them (especially sub 20 which we can't hear at all). This is where headphones fail because you don't feel the vibrations through your body, even if the frequency response is there. Wearable subwoofers exist to achieve this without upsetting the entire neighborhood.
    Though time-aligning such a huge driver through it's entire frequency response to a much smaller driver is no easy feat. You can do a lot with DSP, but the better solution would be to have 2 smaller subwoofers for bass-extension for your bookshelves, and a single larger driver with enough SPL to fill your room for the lower sub-bass region, since directionality doesn't matter at this frequency. You can add more subs for bass management to improve things further, since with sub bass the difference in oscilations at different frequencies can be quite large. You could also go for towers without bass extension subwoofers, but with towers you again have more directional awareness and thus not as good of a performance with imaging and again more drivers that can be misaligned, with potentially no way to fix it if it only has a single input and no crossover bypass.
    You are near-field, so these issues come less in to play. It's important to understand no universal solutions exist when it comes to types of speakers, placement, bass management, etc. It all depends on your room. With that in mind, Neumann headphones are aimed at the studio and not the home, so they are purely analytical tools. Bass immersion is not what is the goal here, rather to make sure there aren't any nasty sounds hidden in those lower regions for when the song is played back at a soundsystem that does support these frequencies.
