In the African country of Mauritania, they still buy/sell slaves today.

  • @sheepsky

Why Africa? Africa was basically the last place to develop modern nation states with non-feudal/tribal economies and social structures, largely because of unfortunate geography, and they were the most vulnerable to invading armies/peoples at the time of colonial expansion.

your explanattion about Africa is vague, just name one place here on earth that has no "tribal" problem, then I'm saying your explanation is vague because what would you say about Somalia that has been in turmoil for long and yet only one Tribe somali.

@@maxwellmakenzi I meant why Africa was taken over by colonial powers. I don't know each countries history in-depth but here in the UK we had the Highland clearances that destroyed the Scottish clan system and earlier events of peasants being moved off the common land by the lords to go to work in the cities. This happened across much of Europe during the begging of and just before the industrial revolution and the age of sail. All I meant was that because the European countries had moved past the feudal system towards Capitalism in the 15/1600s, that allowed them to create a much great surplus of resources and to much more easily enslave people from far away lands and later invade those countries. It's highly complex I don't doubt that. I wasn't saying the existence of tribes etc causes problems or is bad. But tribal communities, and feudal communities, which is what the majority of Africa was at the time, were obviously more vulnerable to developing Capitalist powers. Also Africa isn't that far from Europe. All these people cared about was profit, so it was cheaper for them to get slaves from Africa than from India or China etc.

Colonialism came about because the European nations were always trying to conqueror each other throughout history. So to become more powerful than the other nations became a goal for these countries so that they are not conquerored themselves.
It was also a means to explore for unknown lands that might be economically more productive.

As more places became nation states with a military of its own it would have been a declaration of war with Africa being so large and so many were just tribes so it was a vulnerability issue. It doesn't make any of this right but it's history that we can't change. We just have to understand that fact and not see the population of today as how it was back then.

When Europeans first settled the New World, they used natives and indentured servants as a source of labor. However, since they were dying in large numbers, Europeans began to use Africans who they saw as more productive and resistant to diseases.

This is why during the time of Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad led to Canada. We abolished slavery way before the US did. We’ve always been light years ahead of America on almost every issue. In the War of 1812, the US tried to invade Canada, and got their White House burned down TWICE. 😂 They like to say that it was a truce, but it wasn’t. Canada won. There’s a song about it called, conveniently, The War of 1812 by the Arrogant Worms. It’s hilarious and well worth your time. The song is historically accurate, too. 😂

What I learned from school about why Africans were preferred to others as slaves was about strength and skill. The mortality rate was lower among the Africans, so it was just good business. I think the whole "superior and inferior race" that came up later was just an excuse to make themselves feel better about what they were doing.

True because they also tried it with Indians before settling on Blacks, the Indians were taken to Africa susrprisingly and the caribbean in the sugarcane plantations before they decided on sticking with blacks because of the reasons you mentioned.

Didn't the British compensate slaves owners 17 billion pounds (in today's money) after the end of Slavery and didn't give nothing to former enslaved people, also after abolition they sent millions of indentured labours around the world but many laborers were coerced or deceived into signing contracts, (some didn't know English, some didn't know where they would be sent and some were even kidnapped, intimidated or threaten into it), the conditions under they worked were often harsh and exploitative, any laborers were subjected to physical abuse and inadequate living conditions, and their contracts which were typically five to seven years, were frequently extended beyond the original term

    • @christhornycroft3686

True, but the UK and Canada dealt with slavery a lot faster than the US. Some white Americans are still advocating for it or trying to normalize it. We’ve always been light years ahead of the US on the issues that matter. In Canada, we don’t bury history. We try to learn from it. In America, they either justify it or pretend it never happened. Americans criticizing other countries always leads to hypocrisy. They never do anything good unless they absolutely have to.

This video I have watched it before, it's made by someone who is too "proud" to say "I apologise" its just half truths, not that I disregard what Britain did but they stopped those boats not because they loved "blacks", it was all economics, preventing the Spanish and Portuguese empires from growing. The British worked with Kenyan locals and Arabs in the coastal of Kenya and surrounded the Portugues in their Fort of Jesus in Mombasa which they built in 1593, only later to make Kenya a colony in 1890 and 1894 by going against their agreements they had signed with local chiefs.
