I had to use a magnifying glass and a lot of patience.. I don't think I could ever do another mod chip install again ever, but you make it look easy as pie!! I think it took me nearly 4 or 5 hours to actually get it installed over several days having to walk away from it.. I lost a piece of myself with that experience that I'll never be able to get back.. even though I love the PS2, sales dont mean quality. Pop stars sell millions of tickets and songs because they are everywhere; many trash movies like Suicide Squad sell a lot of tickets because of marketing; Knack sold really well because it was the only family oriented launch title for the PS4 even though it is awfully mediocre and launch titles sell well because many people purchase any game without knowing how it is just to properly use the console... Many things are not appreciated by people for a lot of reasons, unfortunately quality alone is not enough. The PS2 at the time seemed like the best purchase as far as I see: multimedia out of the box, gaming and retrocompatibility. GameCube and Dreamcast were cheaper, but the least valuable, it just played games (DC played music, but it wasnt a huge thing when it released unlike Saturn and PS) . Xbox had DVD beside gaming, but it was clunky, requiring a remote and adaptor to work, so many people didnt immediately knew that function and when someone did, it was an added cost. It doesnt mean that their competitors lacked worthwhile experiences.

Wow, nice job! I remember modding a few Playstations back in like 1998. Back then the mod chips i used didnt come on a nice IC like these, it was just a straight silicon chip you soldered directly to. very primitive compared to something like this, but it worked and we were happy. I cant remember the exact mod chip model we used. Fun stuff....
Im impressed, delicate and precise soldering is a royal pain in ass, I've tried many times to fix a DS fuse and failed everytime (3mm fuses) you manage to keep the work tidy in such a tiny area.... patience and practice is key here, great job.
Thanks so much for sharing in this video and great work - you routed the patch wiring very well. However, may I make a few suggestions as a veteran of PCB rework? 1) It's usually simpler to prepare and route the wiring loom and presolder the harness onto any daughterboard assemblies, which you can do just by measuring the routes on the board using a fibreglass tape measure (the dressmaking type sort). You can get much better point-to-point solder joints onto pads when doing this flat on the bench, leaving some length allowance. 2) Then you cut the ends of the harness at the jumper points on the mainboard as you solder each connection which is much easier and doesn't involve trying to solder bent conductor ends. 3) I recommend avoiding any adhesives in PCB rework, even on the jumper wires, because there can be unexpected chemical reactions under temperature from them. I recommend using fabric rework tape or Kapton tape as it also has the advantage of being able to be easily cut and repositioned, and individual conductors in a harness can be brought up through Kapton tape by using the point of a scalpel. Just a few thoughts!
those midis take me back to the broke but happy me teenage years, all those teams developing serials and more back in the day on the infancy of the internet with no one spying your activities or tracking your every movement, times when we didn't have to use VPN's precisely the times of the ps1 to ps2 transition.
I remember way back doing modchip installs when I was a kid and making huge $ for it back then. I learned on forums and from pictures about using superglue and man did it make a huge difference in work cleanliness. Not that the customers ever saw it, well some wanted a picture and it always blew their minds on how many wires there was and how it was so cleanly done. I also had a LOT of customers come from a chinese mall who had a chip installed say 6 months earlier that stopped working, I'd open it up to cold solder joints everywhere, wires had fallen off, you name it they did it. I would get paid full price to remove and reinstall with all new wiring, etc. Even funnier was how many people came to me modded from elsewhere and it would be one of those Magic 3.1 clones (Some of you will remember Magic 3.1 :D) I usually stuck to the matrix chip or DMS3 for those of you who remember.
Still running a Matrix Infinity I installed when I was about 15! I run through OPL though as all my backups are now on ext hdd. Ahh those were the days. My iron was massive too, so had to blutac scalpel blades in between IC contacts to stop overflow.

I love how during one delicate section of the video, the chiptune version or Careless Whisper plays. Guessing all joysticks in the workshop got proper hard.
Thanks for the great video. I completed the same mod a few minutes ago. My cable management does not look quite as nice as yours, but I am satisfied with the first attempt.
With MechaPwn out, I think the 79000X systems are the best. patches for some known games the 75000X had issues with, a smaller board footprint that allows room for the laser ribbon cable to not ride directly underneath the disc so it scratches discs when it comes loose over time, and no pic fix. DECKARD models can be 99% converted to a DTL TEST system via MechaPwn and can do a 100% conversion between retail regions due to that data being writable as well.
Aaaaaahhhbh!!!! What do these mods actually accomplish?! Seen the ps1 vid. Had to google the mod and read up. Need to mention what these mods do at the beginning of your video. Please.
not only that, modchips can unlock regions (people are used to current gen consoles being region free, but on PS2 it was not the case) and can run homebrew apps such as OPL which allow running games on a shared folder in the network, saving the laser
i found that touching the very tip of the conductor with my iron for a second or two would contract the insulation enough to solder cleanly to a pad. dont know if anyone else wants to try it like that or not but there you go
Great job! That wire is trash though. It keeps melting at the ends making a mess. That would drive me crazy and COULD cause shorting to the vias although it would have to melt just right.
wirestrippers are great, but for tiny wires nailclippers are the best. I take my flushcut and make the tinyest gash in one side, then you put the wire in the gash, full force clip, and you´re done.
I'm jealous of your soldering skills. It's immaculate. How do you see all those tiny wires and solder without bridges? Just from the video I struggled to see, lol. I always manage to bridge pads even when using flux and it takes some time to unsolder and redo. You make it look so easy to just run your solder and iron across and everything bonds so cleanly. I'm starting to think about blaming my tools, but what do I know? Great stuff. Loved the Matrix Infinity. Great chip.
If you have a Dremel with a Small Tipped Grinding tool you can Grind a Small Hole into the Nail Clippers for a Really Nice Makeshift Wire Stripper for small wires!
That's true, but it was just by the method of the other side of the screw being inaccessible, not because of anything special about the baseplate. I don't want you to feel like I'm attacking you, I enjoy your videos, and I've learned a lot. Just nothing special about that plate other than a threaded hole.
I enjoyed watching this video, however, I have no idea what all the stuff I just watched does... I would have loved to see the differences between the modded and unmodded systems. Explain what the chips are and what they change for the console. Fun video, just really no frames of reference.
That's what I hated. No explanation of what the mod is or does and you have to get all the way to the end to find out that he never explains anything. It could be retitled: Let's Play - Watch Me Solder!
Model number is also in the ps2 browser, if you hit triangle a bunch of info will popup including what number you have. Came in handy I thought I had a 70012 slim but the sticker ripped and couldn't confirm it. Defiantly going to be a mod I will do eventually!
I'd love to see a video about a HDD mod, which is possible to do in that PS2 revision. Personally, I've tried to do the mod and fit an IDE to SD card adapter in the original case. I've failed to do so, but I believe it's possible when someone more experienced would take care of it.
That's because these machines were made by about a dozen different factories, a few in Japan, but mostly in China. Foxconn made most of them. I had a couple of DTL-H developer's consoles, those were made by SKZ Kizarazu, in Japan. You never know who might have made them until you read the sticker on the back.

Watching this video is like watching arts, or listening to a relaxing song, electronics got fun!!!
Well done. Man does this bring back memories!
love the chosen music for this vid!
sometimes i watch voultar videos to see how many times he nearly burned his finger off with the iron
That little metal peace you took out is for the vertical stand it's what the stand screwed into
Ryan Scherbluk That's right. It's an anchor point for security devices and other things that will lock it down.
Please.
It allows you to play burnt games
NoseHump THANK YOU!!!!
not only that, modchips can unlock regions (people are used to current gen consoles being region free, but on PS2 it was not the case) and can run homebrew apps such as OPL which allow running games on a shared folder in the network, saving the laser
NoseHump WHAT?¡ All that work to play burnt disks?¡ I thought this make better frames, better graphs, better loading times.
NemesiStealth he explains that the other chip allows you to not completely buttfuck your cd-drive.
i found that touching the very tip of the conductor with my iron for a second or two would contract the insulation enough to solder cleanly to a pad. dont know if anyone else wants to try it like that or not but there you go
Great job! That wire is trash though. It keeps melting at the ends making a mess. That would drive me crazy and COULD cause shorting to the vias although it would have to melt just right.
At 10:47, how are you able to hold the soldering iron up to that wire for that long without burning the wire?
Complete EXPLOSION!
Such beautifully run wires that will never be seen again ;)
love that tracklist! :D
I have no idea what is happening. But it's fun to watch. 🙂
You sir are the Bob Ross of console mods.
wirestrippers are great, but for tiny wires nailclippers are the best.
Great chip.
i did this mod back in 06 on my slim ps2. still works to this day
What is the result for this modification???
very intimidating lookin mods but fascinating to watch
You make it seem easy to do... it's even relaxing.
How do the later models of the ps2 differ in preformance? By losing the ps1 CPU does it change the way it handles backward compatibility?
If you have a Dremel with a Small Tipped Grinding tool you can Grind a Small Hole into the Nail Clippers for a Really Nice Makeshift Wire Stripper for small wires!
I had a ps1 and 2 ps2. Ps1 died 2.5 years in, and the 1st ps2 lasted 15 minutes and the 2nd lasted 4 years and which point the dvd laser failed.
When I heard Mental Delivrance, chills through my whole body
That "tamper-proof tab" he removed at the start is only there for the vertical base to screw into. It's nothing more than a mounting point.
kaishenlong0502 Store Kiosks also used it as a security device...
That's true, but it was just by the method of the other side of the screw being inaccessible, not because of anything special about the baseplate. I don't want you to feel like I'm attacking you, I enjoy your videos, and I've learned a lot. Just nothing special about that plate other than a threaded hole.
i dont know what you are doing, but im watching anyway :)
Bob Ross would be proud of you. Relaxing to watch. :)
You know a lot of good chiptune artist i see ;)
Really diggin these chipTunes!
My PS2 wont read any disc and not spin the motor. I replaced the motor and nothing happened, could it be the laser is burnt out? It is a 75004 model
Ummm, that "tamper-proof tab" is just the plate that the vertical stand screws into. Neat video, tho'
was about to say this.
Fun fact, that "tamper proof tab" is actually the plate that the vertical mount attaches to!
That's because these machines were made by about a dozen different factories, a few in Japan, but mostly in China. Foxconn made most of them. I had a couple of DTL-H developer's consoles, those were made by SKZ Kizarazu, in Japan. You never know who might have made them until you read the sticker on the back.
i never did any ps2 slim mods, but the 44 wire ps2 mods. and...one didnt work. couldnt ever find why either. i mean one got bricked.
Excellent soldering techniques.
Only someone who was a member of the Alan Parson's Project could employ such soldering grace.
