I think it's less about sim vs arcade and more a problem with speed-based games. Sim racers always felt unfun to me simply because even the tiniest mistake results in the race being effectively lost, and you have to spend hours getting used to the maps to know the exact way you're intended to apply the right amount of pressure, etc. Plus if they include grinding to get brakes that actually work and so on, there's that too. Whereas if it gets overly arcadey with no consequences to failure, you put it on the rails and it stops being a game. That's kind of what happened to some of the Sonic games. If you give too many consequences, the game expects perfection and there stops being a game in that respect, because then it becomes a chore. If someone gets ahead of you in a game of perfection, how do you ever catch up? Cheap stuff like forcing first place to have a lower top speed end up being the only kind of way to even races out when no one is making any mistakes. One of the reasons why things like kart games work well is because the racing component is ~somewhat trivial, so most of the gameplay is weighted on the superfluous elements, like item use. Seems like they're hard to make.
PlagueOfGripes Yea, that's why Forza's done well to add steering assist, braking assist, traction control, etc., and the ability to turn those off, so the guys who spend $1500 on a living room driving cockpit and the guys who just want to ogle at the shiny cars and track vistas can enjoy the same game. The reason so many driving sims exist (Forza, GranTurismo, Driveclub, DiRT, F1 20XX, The Crew, NFS Shift, Project Cars, Project Gotham Racing, Real Racing...) is because there exists a group of people that want their racing game punishingly difficult when they start out so it's that much more satisfying when you finally achieve perfection. But everyone can get behind Mario Kart, cause Mario Kart's the best.
So what I learned from this video, 1. Liam wants a realistic racing game with unrealistic everything else...whatever that means, and 2. Pat is really good at racing games when they don't require you to turn. Awesome.
***** A futuristic racer with realistic gravity and lack there of would be cool. Something like F-Zero yet still grounded wouldn't be bad. Yet at that point cornering would have to be crazy because going 400+ mph hitting a corner is a fucking RIP.
xeros720 Wow Keiichi you really raised it up, the way you move with that Scion FR-S, you should be called Drift King. PS the first one to get all the references gets a cookie and no Drift King isn't from "the Fast and the Furious"
***** I remember them once saying that while none of them can drive, all of their girlfriends can - except Liam's. Liam asked, does not being inferior to his S/O in that way make him the manliest? "NO, LIAM, IT DOESN'T."
9:25 So Liam, you want a totally realistic, down-to-earth driving sim, that's completely off the wall and swarming with magic robots? Oh, and you should win things by playing!
Greg D Liam says this sort of thing every three podcasts. It's kinda great to just hear unfiltered pipe dreams that the speaker doesn't understand are pipe dreams.
thejunkmanlives He never claimed he was good. His standards for "THAT bad" might be very high. Plus with that particular quote, he immediately followed up with a "but" about how he has not gotten a feel for the games physics at all yet.
Matt and Woolie, I love you guys, but I'm really glad Pat and Liam played this game. Also, the water effects on the windshields in this game are *amazing*.
Robo-Brinks Very true. Think this driving game trend with them is gonna culminate in a Let's Watch of Initial D? Liam already referenced Speedy Speed Boy...
Pat says he plays one level above baby mode in Forza. This explains why he breaks like he's stomping on a spider and never slows down in turns as if he were playing on Supermarket Sweep. It's easy to play that way when your car only takes cosmetic damage.
I love how the Burnout series comes up in almost every racing game with these guys. I, myself are really hurting for a current gen burnout. Maybe a combination of Revenge and Paradise.
I'm really liking these Pat and Liam videos, they have a nice chemistry together that makes for a very relaxing and laid back experience. I would really like another full LP from them.
Pat: You know what I love in sim racing games like this; when you're able to use other cars to cushion turns. Liam: Yeah, but get penalized for it in this game. Me: Well I was considering downloading this, but fuck that now...
25:25 actually in rallycross tracks have a shortcut that the drivers can use once per race. they have to choose at which lap they do it, which adds a layer of strategy.
Robo-Brinks We're havin two conversations at once here man, but definitely, we need a new f-zero...badly. Liam seems enthusiastic enough about it on this vid...maybe they'll consider it?
What Liam wants is a racing game with realistic movement and handling for turns and speed that takes place in a ridiculous setting but convinces you to put up with the difficulty of handling by making the ridiculous premise feel real. Which sounds sick.
Man I'm just watching this and going "Man look at how good that windshield wiper tech is." "Are you even looking at these wipers though? Look how good that is."
This is the one time I wish I hadn't tried to find context for something they talked about. God, that was one of the most disturbing scenes in a sport that I have ever seen.
Okay. I have completely figured out how racing game players WANT their games. Just add EVERY particle effect....but it still won't look as good as Ki. also. That rain is two set animations on windows. good job drive club. You had ONE JOB.
I don't know what you are talking about pat. I just bought A-Spec and that game is super easy to control. And even to this day 15 years later that game is still as good as the day it came out. If you don't take a turn going 150mph you'll usually make it through no problem. I mean I've been playing it actively for about a month a few races a day, and have almost cleared out the beginner races, already won a few endurance races, and figured out how the gearing, camber... all that shit works. If you drive a car in real life you would be a lot better at it, since it's a racing simulator essentially. If you take a turn going 150 in real life, you're pretty much dead... and that's how it works in the game too, minus the dying part. Instead you get bullshit traction control just driving you into the wall and you get stuck on it. The biggest flaw of that game is the amount of times you have to do the same races over and over, just with increasing number of laps, but the CPU isn't getting better. Fuck you "Test Track"! You're too long!
also in GT3 the car would control differently depending on which camera angle you used. If you used the 3rd person angle the turn radius would be much worse and the car can't handle corners as well. But if you use the first person camera, the cars turn and handles much better. Since there isn't a huge fucking model of a car on screen.
I played Gran Turismo 3 once, got pretty far into it too, but the thing that killed it for me was the single save slot, and having a younger sister who didn't understand that the game had only one save slot.
I love how Pat smacks into every single wall in cockpit view, switches to 3rd person, drifts well and drives actually halfway decent for 30 seconds, says he "hates it" and then precedes to switch back to cockpit and smashes into every turn once more...... -_-
I love how around the 25:30ish mark, Liam suggests to Pat he change his view, and when he does, he does several immaculate drifts. And then he spends the whole time saying how it sucks, goes back to cockpit view, and immediately crashes lol
that mechanic where pat talks about having the track layout change does exist. In grid 2, there are races where after a certain point in the race, the track would change its layout, making it unpredictable what was gonna be around each corner. It kept you on your toes and kept the races from getting stagnant.
not really... My friends and I can easily get to the top of the leaderboards with a pad... Racing wheels are only recommended for simulators like Asseto, GT or Forza...
Am I the only guy who looks at this game that was in development for years and has stupid amounts of content and awesome visuals, and eventually zones out and just starts thinking about Kiryu dodging missiles and doing sick heat moves?
Okay I was JUST thinking yesterday about how I need more videos with just Liam and Pat in them and now I get TWO immediately afterwards? Fuck I'm psychic
21:30 "150cc in a game I've never played" Liam still scarred by the humiliation that was Super Indie Kart at 150cc. His balls were all over that stream.
How long will it be for us to have a Speed Racer game. Just have a Forza style game with the insane tracks from Speed Racer and be able to drive the Mach 6.
29:32 Pat spends three minutes describing Nascar Racers, a cartoon from 1999-2001, spanning 26 episodes, where tracks spout hazards and detours and changes sporadically from encounter to encounter. Also Nascar cars with sideboosts and shit.
So I'm watching this tutorial race in the snowy/rainy mountain, and I can't focus on Pat and Liam talking or anything happening on the track. For I am looking at the windshield, in awe of how ridiculously detailed the rain is as it hits the glass, gets wiped by the wipers, reacts to the movement of the car... That looks really pretty, is all.
Also, I've gotta say, this game is drop dead gorgeous when you turn the HUD off, which you can do by pressing the Right button on the d-pad to toggle it.
"I don't like the handling" Well maybe if you took your foot of the accelerator every once in a while and actually used your breaks you wouldn't be slamming into the walls all the time. You where going into hairpin turns at 180mph for fucks sakes!
This is actually my game of the year 2014, the cheap season pass just completes the game. The graphics and photo mode is insane, seriously go to driveclub's twitter and take a look at the fan's pics...they actually used them for the menus in the game!
Pat and Liam that game exists its called Grand Turismo 6 with the Tomahawk X(Its a concept car) with 2000hp and it will go 600km/h and 0-100 in 3 seconds
It was really fun watching you guys play this. Think you could give Project Cars a shot? If you go through a few settings a new player can make it really accessible or a seasoned sim driver can turn those off and get a more true to life experience. Plus all the cars are unlocked at start. career is optional but well made so you could start there or jump into solo or online races and drive everything
What's next, The Crew? I'm actually really interested in seeing them play it, because in my opinion it's the best Racer/Freeroam since Midnight Club L.A.

PlagueOfGripes Sexy big-boobed car art when?
tricksterhuaun Go to DeviantArt, and you'll find mountains of that.
PlagueOfGripes And because first-person (behind-the wheel) perspective in a racing game is literally the worst thing ever created.

But everyone can get behind Mario Kart, cause Mario Kart's the best.
PlagueOfGripes Honestly I just want a game just like Burnout 3, Paradise was fun but for some reason I didn't like it as much as Burnout 3
Liam is way better at these racing games than Pat is. That surprises me, because I always looked at Pat as being more racist.
HA!...nice.
Magello clever girl
Magello pretty sneaky sis
Magello Holy crap that got me. Well done.
Magello "Woolie you're my favorite 3/5ths of a person" - Liam
Considering the salt Pat is capable of, you'd expect the snow on the roads to have melted already
One day, Liam will let go of his hatred/love of Love Life.
And one day I might look up what the hell Love Life is.
Maddude I looked it up. The Wiki said, "Liam Porn"
*Love Live
Maddude Love Live's great. Liam's just being a salty shit.
I will say the same about me but with Idolmaster. No idea.
When Idolmaster is way better there is no point in going to the hell Love Live is :3c
It's been forever since I really spent time with a full blown racing game, the last one was R4.
Just moving down the PS+ lineup, eh?
comatose kitty

I think the new NFS reboot could be that game.

xeros720 Pat and Liam are killing my love
"It thought that was my fucking windshield" A windshield? IN the door? How long has Pat gone without even SEEING a car?
***** Probably a long ass time, since none of the Best Friends own cars or even have drivers licenses.
***** I'm pretty sure he meant side mirror. He's probably just drunk again. That was pretty much the definition of impaired driving.

Oh, I must have missed the video where he said that. Thanks for correcting me, friend.

"im not that bad at racing games".
-pat
lol your smashed up car says otherwise
thejunkmanlives He never claimed he was good.
His standards for "THAT bad" might be very high.

TacitIron Hav half way in he's still smackin up walls. Your right his standard for bad driving is high.
thejunkmanlives Well, maybe "bad" for him is not being able to even make the car go, so in those very VERY shit terms, he's not "that bad".
Custer The Hymen Buster i guess pat had a good time then.
thejunkmanlives he left out the 'compared to a mentally retarded infant' part
Matt and Woolie, I love you guys, but I'm really glad Pat and Liam played this game.
Also, the water effects on the windshields in this game are *amazing*.
Another showcase of Pat's driving skillz? Round 2
Drift will become Bumper Cars soon....
Robo-Brinks You know, why isn't this considered a Best Friends Drift? Cuz Pat is fondling in the dark?
AfroMetalMizu Because you need to reach the pedals to drift.
Robo-Brinks Very true. Think this driving game trend with them is gonna culminate in a Let's Watch of Initial D? Liam already referenced Speedy Speed Boy...
AfroMetalMizu Hmm...When was the last Let's Watch...?
Pat says he plays one level above baby mode in Forza. This explains why he breaks like he's stomping on a spider and never slows down in turns as if he were playing on Supermarket Sweep. It's easy to play that way when your car only takes cosmetic damage.
Liam and Pat are at it again. I love how every combination of the best friends has a different vibe to it.
I keep imagining Pat struggle to get his baby feet to reach the car pedals as he drives in his child car harness.

AfroMetalMizu Well if you believe enough (and send enough messages) they might do it....Unless it's Dragon Quest 9...
"The handling model.." When you don't brake going into a hairpin? Yeah, that's the handling model.

Driveclub=Kars. You fooking luv em. The feel of the leather seats.
I find it hilarious that as soon as pat changes the camera to outside the car he start playing WAY better but he just doesn't like it.
The rain effect on the windshield is beautiful
I honestly like Pat and Liam playing realistic driving sims, its comfy

I love how Pat smacks into every single wall in cockpit view, switches to 3rd person, drifts well and drives actually halfway decent for 30 seconds, says he "hates it" and then precedes to switch back to cockpit and smashes into every turn once more...... -_-
aaaaw Pat's icon is a photo of his lil plushie. :333333
I can totally see why Pat doesn't enjoy this. It's physically impossible to enjoy a racing game without music.
Please tell you guys are going to play Fast Racing Neo once it comes out.
Pat doesn't want to say no because last time he did he ended up doing a full LP of Ride to Hell: Retribution...
I love how around the 25:30ish mark, Liam suggests to Pat he change his view, and when he does, he does several immaculate drifts. And then he spends the whole time saying how it sucks, goes back to cockpit view, and immediately crashes lol

The first rule of Driveclub is to always talk about Driveclub. Side note, Pat's plushie pic is adorbs.
Two videos of the best combination in one day?
I thought everybody forgot about this game already.
***** Hell no.
A racing wheel is so recommended, it is nearly required.
not really... My friends and I can easily get to the top of the leaderboards with a pad...
Racing wheels are only recommended for simulators like Asseto, GT or Forza...

i feel a deep, intimate attraction to vehicular auto-mobiles, my good sir
i greatly enjoy caressing them with my appendages
Oh jesus Pat's driving is scary, like legit scary like I'm wincing in fear when he rams right into a wall.
Did Pat just describe a kind of F1 version of Deathrace?
I don't know about these 2 but I personally love Drive Club... My BMW's are so pretty in that game..
9:00 but the Mini is front-wheel drive...
the first rule about drive club is you don't talk about drive club

That creepy little pat avatar that pops up during drifts is freaking me out.
Pat and Liam that game exists its called Grand Turismo 6 with the Tomahawk X(Its a concept car) with 2000hp and it will go 600km/h and 0-100 in 3 seconds
Will the PS Plus edition ever leave the store after the month if over? Like the games usually do?
When's Super Best Friends Drift: F Zero GX?
When are you guys gonna play Full Auto?!
Man I love Facesitter tour packs.
20:30 Ah, but Liam, I fookin' love KAHZ... Or some say Kosm.
This game is a cars crashing spinning out of control simulator.
Pat and Liam remains my favourite combination.
It was really fun watching you guys play this. Think you could give Project Cars a shot? Plus all the cars are unlocked at start. career is optional but well made so you could start there or jump into solo or online races and drive everything
Bless you, Liam.
Wow, Pat used his actual name in this. I never thought that would be on video...
