Bolshack Dragon is hilarious! I started playing YGO before being so Alienated by the speed of the game that I switched to MTG. People complain about how OP MTG cards have gotten "and that's fair, power creep is getting rough" but compared to YGO, MTG is slow af! YGO isn't fun at all anymore.
That flavor text of Control of the Court tho: "Power-hungry eunuchs, the curse of the dynasty, have thrown the masses of the people into the depths of misery."
Eunuchs held a lot of administrative power in the imperial court, as they were entrusted with making policy decisions and managing the affairs of the inner palace where the emperor's concubines resided. I don't see anything too outlandish about the flavor text.
6:50 I think most examples of this comes from Japan, and one way to look at it is through currency. The Japanese yen are usually counted in terms of hundreds at the smallest. It makes sense that a game could piggyback on the inherent 'money math skills' common folk have. Some people I know might be turned off by school maths but suddenly become experts when it comes to splitting the bill or calculating change.
Yeah it may be a cultural related things in some way, but the real reason is a game design concept called granularity. Basically, it helps to keep the game easy to balance
Rather than 'money math' I think its more related to the familiarity of the range of numbers that you see every day and even moreso the 'bigger == better' aspect of human psychology. Like people that use Fahrenheit instead of Celsius think the range of numbers feels better for no real reason other than that it includes 100.
Pulling cards from all available sets was a great move. So many old things that were just digital or in extras like Vanguard. Too bad these boxes are "convention only" so far! 😞
It's too bad WOTC has decided that no one outside of the cons are gonna see any of the mystery boxes. The choices they've been making are just insane. Got my first box of Bloomburrow, and either i got unlucky, or they're really screwing over the play boosters. only 3 alt art cards in the entire box. and value wise was no good either, though i'll be trying to eventually collect one of the entire set.
As soon as I saw Karn, I thought "Vanguard!" I've 4 Vanguard cards I got as promos back in the 90's. I never did play Vanguard but I'd like to try one day.
I already mentioned this at another youtube channel, but with all the weird design and weird art with multiple different versions of the same card, along with the growth in quality from Chinese proxies, the presence of proxies at official events will soon become a problem, if its not a problem already that hasn't been noticed yet.

I wonder how is it supposed to interact with other cards, as the most common reference to Basic is for cards that lets you tutor out basic lands form your deck, but the Impostor already has the ability to be searched in place of anything else. 🤔
@@enricomassignani 🤔 I can't find any reference in the rules about deck-building constraints (or lack of) intrinsic to the Basic supertype. Rule 100.2a specifically mentions basic LANDS. And the Oracle text of Relentless Rats doesn't treat them as a Basic Creature, for example.
Yes. He compared it to Kamahl because that barbarian was originally a red card and got a green version, going from rage to tranquility, sort of like Teferi might change.

To be fair though I felt like the original Teferi was meant to be green just because it focused more on the creature aspect than instant and sorcery.
I think Bolshack Dragon would be a surprisingly fair card if it was actually printed. It doesn't have haste, and has no flying that you usually see on dragons. And it's six whole mana with no built-in protection. A card like this might just be a genuinely good addition to the game.

Wow, we're getting the Future Sight frame back? Nice. I liked it. The symbols on the top left corner made it easier to find the type of cards you were looking for, when you had a bunch of those in a pile. The Impostor having every card's name is troublesome, as it would function as at least, the 5th copy of each non basic land in your regular deck... Unless they gave it a rules text to avoid that, if you had 4 of those guys, it would mean the rest of your deck would be made of 56 basic lands...
They could easily make Rusko a legit card by templating it to say "....create a Midnight Clock token that has " *insert Midnight Clock text here* " and I doubt it would be all that overpowered in commander
I imagined the V Dragon was using it's claws to attack. Three claws per front limb equal 6 sides to the die. I suppose the 5 is it's "claw" damage and the X is supposed to be the flame. Either way cool card
I always wondered how they would tackle space issues with the Future Sight card frame. O-kagochi shows us what happens when it gets full. Are there any cards that might now fit on the card frame?
It's not actually full - the pips extend further down the curve, there are 6 more mana symbol slots if you look through the type line and text box, 12 slots total

Yes, it's discard at random, but you end up plus one card. I don't know if the probability math adds up, but I'll bet someone out there wants to break it.
It's not really +1 net, but rather that it replaces itself. It could matter for decks that care about card draw or one's with incidental bonuses (like Sheoldred, the Apocalypse) but the random nature of the discards can lead to problems unless it's a reanimator or self-mill style deck. Which could probably be exactly where it would see play.
With WotC having revisited Planechase, and with them about to revisit Archenemy, I am hoping this reuse of art hints at them revisiting Vanguard. I have the full sets of all of them, and I would like to see more Vanguard.
why are some of these cards the best examples of effects that match flavor perfectly, how did they go so hard on the flavor for cards that are generally not available or legal to play.
it is bonkers to think they put conjure into paper cards even in an un-set card. When u conjure in MTGA you get a real copy of a card that can go to your grave & even be shuffled into your deck. Not a token. To play it right you need to own the un-set card & one copy of the cared it conjures.
if u ask me, what they should have done with rusko, I would say. Conjure a card from outside of the game called midnight clock, & put it into play, & force the player to own the card & have as part of a side board. Then make rusko Loos this text when u control midnight clock, so u can only get one.
"Has all Card names" means you better not be playing any other Legendries without a Mirror thing or that one Sakashima in play. EDIT or does that only work if both are Legendary? I might have messed that up... Oh that was TEFERI as a Green Druid. I thought it was Garruk there for a moment and wondered why he cared about stopping people from casting at Instant Speed.

i'm not too happy about Rusko. They literally just put another "win condition" on the command zone. Literally may as well just read "Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, each opponent loses 1 life." Cards like Ghostly Flicker are going to spike in price for a bit. This may be "Nadu 2.0" because it takes less to make work AND access to spell protection.

If you look at Alchemy cards, very few of them are on par with the average quality of artwork in premier sets. They make less money from the digital exclusive cards, so they probably pay less for commissions, lack strong art direction, and don't call in any favors from their vanguard artists.
yeah, im one of them. i just cant resist trying to break his stupid face. i hang ok vs him lifetime, probably 30-35% win rate with a Heliod Removal/Angel/Lifegain deck. i suspect wins are vs noob suboptimal decks. I dont see him that often lately.
Between test cards and acorn cards its seems like most of this set is unplayable in sanctioned magic. Far as im concerned they may as well have slapped an Un in front of Mystery. Imo this set isn't worth buying packs of. If i get anything it'll just be singles

I've been working on (playing around with really) my own custom Magic set for a while now (too long), and every innovation I intended to shock the world with has been stolen (they're watching me) by Wizards and made into actual Magic cards*. Now, they've got a Basic Creature in the form of Omnipresent Impostor. I assume that "(A deck may have any number of basic cards.)", which is how my Basic Creatures display their reminder text. Think about it. There's no reason why the Basic supertype can't appear on nonland cards. You can stop reading here if you value your sanity. * A short, off-the-top-of-my-head, and incomplete list of my "stolen" concepts include: Warlock as a new creature type, the proliferation of Clues, Treasures and Food, the return of double-faced cards outside of Innistrad, more cards like Lord Gonti that let a player 'steal' opponents' cards (and a keyword action to go with it [Heist]), batching evil-doer creature types together (I called them villains, but Pirates weren't as common when I started -- I used Minions instead), bringing back Mercenaries and expanding their color identity beyond Black, the use of the term Secret Lair (yeah, I've been at this megaproject [over a thousand cards and counting!] since before Dominaria came out), the return of hideaway, crafting an entire world around the themes of crime/criminals (they did it twice already!), creating a serious Magic set in the style of a pre-existing intellectual property (aka Universes Beyond), offering a secondary product that is closely tied to the main product (it's a four-set block, really) in the form of preconstructed decks (like the Commander decks you see today), and more. I suppose great minds think alike, but man, does it suck not making it to print first. It makes my original designs feel derivative. I still have some tricks up my sleeve, and I'm taking what I can from canon Magic when it fits like the way I have a counters-matter subtheme in one of the sets in the block and stun counters (and ability counters, for that matter) are a really clean way to go beyond simple +1/+1 counters.
...and sometimes the similarities are eerily specific, like Bloomburrow's cycle of "Duo" creatures with two relevant creature types sporting compound names that end in 'Duo' and describe both parts of the duo and have abilities either faction would find useful. (Okay, so that last bit only makes sense, but you know what I mean.)
no, that opens up the ability for infinite rolls which will probably combo with a card in the future that gives mana for every roll or pings for every roll or ventures for every roll, etc.
Isnt it impossible to have more than 4 copies of that card and the rest is lands because you cant have more than 4 copies of uniquely named cards? Or is the wording on the deck construction around multiple copies of cards different than that? I play a lot of card games and this type of detail can get mixed up from game to game.
Since Omnipresent Impostor has the Basic supertype, I want to think that means you can have any number of them in your deck, just like with basic lands.

yugioh used to use all 4 digits of the power, but they just got rid of it, which why it deals in multiples of 100 and 1000
i hope they reprint more banding creatures, or make some new ones. (and not just banding sliver)

no, that opens up the ability for infinite rolls which will probably combo with a card in the future that gives mana for every roll or pings for every roll or ventures for every roll, etc.
There are already cards printed that let you re roll dice and trigger of dice rolls. All this card needed was haste to not be unplayable.

If "Omnipresent Imposter" has all card names that means it is a "Relentless Rats" card as well so you can use more than 4 in your deck...

Isnt it impossible to have more than 4 copies of that card and the rest is lands because you cant have more than 4 copies of uniquely named cards?
Or is the wording on the deck construction around multiple copies of cards different than that?
I play a lot of card games and this type of detail can get mixed up from game to game.

Since Omnipresent Impostor has the Basic supertype, I want to think that means you can have any number of them in your deck, just like with basic lands.
