My buddy John and I had planned to do the TAT on these bikes. It took months and months for them to show up. But once we got them - we put a bunch of road miles on them, and should not have been surprised by how underpowered they are. They're tons of fun on the twisty country roads with lower speed limits. But on any secondary road with a speed limit above 50mph - it's not great. The more we read about the TAT, the more worried we became about there being lots of paved miles to do. Or long stretches of straight road through the deserts.
But we hadn't taken them on any real dirt yet. So - we scrambled one nice morning and went out to Hurricane Creek Rd near Max Patch (one of the most beautiful views in the world in my option) to see what they could do in the slop. And slop it was. It had rained for several days and the trail was a disgusting muddy slippery goopy mess.
I've mostly ridden street bikes, but have done a bit of exploring on the great fire roads in this region on rented bikes. But I have zero experience on trails like this. So enjoy the slaughter. There are lots of grunts, groans, bottoming out clunks, heavy breathing, and swearing. I went down twice - the first time within 1 minute of being on the trail. John went down once although I have no proof of that. The resale value of these bikes plummeted over a few hours.
Anyway - going into this ride we were 98% sure we were NOT going to do the TAT on these bikes. They're not very comfortable and they suck on roads above 50mph. But after this ride in the dirt- we may have changed our minds. They are little tractor beasts, and because they're so light, even an inexperienced dirt rider like me can make it through with only minor injuries and bike trashing. This is definitely what these bikes are best at...
Here's John's video of the same ride:
• Honda Trail 125 (CT125...
Other Bikes We've Considered for the Tat:
XT250. I'll say it again - this is probably the best bike for the TAT. Super lightweight, but can go on the highway if needed. But neither of us thinks it looks cool.
Royal Enfield Himalayan: I rented one of these and road all through the Santa Monica Mountains a few weeks ago and loved it. But I can not imagine doing Hurricane Creek on one. They're 450lbs or something and way too heavy for me to do trails like this. I mean - I haven't tried it - but I don't think it would be as fun as the CT125. I'm buying one of these either way because it just seems like the perfect all-around bike. Fine on the highway. Comfortable. And can handle dirt.

I grew up on a Honda trail bike since I was 10 years old in the woods of Western Pennsylvania. I have never heard a rider complain as much as this guy. He whines because it is hard. Did you buy the trail bike for your image? It’s supposed to be a hard challenge. Maybe you should stay on the road. You’re not cut out for challenges and getting back up after you drop your bike. Actually the video did not show you getting off The bike and walking around it to see if there were any structural integrity type problems after you dumped it on the right side. You were more concerned with cosmetics and getting mud out of the cables. I’m glad you have a friend with you who knows how to get through hard times. You should keep him close. Try not to complain so much - it takes all the fun out of it for everybody else. I was going to put a picture of a pacifier here for you but then I realized if you sucked on the pacifier as you ride on the trails you wouldn’t be able to complain into your microphone. Best wishes to stay upright and to have the courage to get off the bike after you drop it and check the whole bike. Have FUN
Complaining about complaining - makes perfect sense.
Post a riding video yourself. You look like you have plenty of time to do one
Sounds like “growing up on a Honda trail bike” is not the only notable thing that happened to Donna. It’s apparent someone has pissed in her Cheerios way back then. Why people must hate on others is beyond me. The irony is they will sit there glued to the content like it won’t be there tomorrow. Wouldn’t it just be better if she would have just changed the channel? Just sayin.
They grow them Tuf in western Pa ...... 😳👌
LOL what the fuck is this memoir, grandpa? Why don't you get out on a bike and blow your disks out to bring some content, don't drop your colostomy bag in the process.
In the right state of mind, this could be a great educational experience.
Dude! that was awesome! We ride trails like that in the blue ridge mountains in Virginia. We ride them on Mini bikes old mb200's. Guys laugh at us as we blow by them, all 5 of us. and ask us at the trail heads, "How the Hell"!! Just gun it and plow on through. Momentum is the name of the game.. Love it laughed with ya'll just like I was with you.!!! by the way Im 51 and love every ride, keeps me young!
The CT125 can be ridden on TAT , it’s all about the rider. 80% rider 20% bike, you will improve and will love it. There’s a guy on youtube that travelled around the world on a beaten up C90 , it’s all about you.
I watched this video because you made me laugh the whole time. great commentary.
Wow. Just wow. Glad you guys made it safely!
Sometimes when you don’t see a good line you just have to let the bike do all the work and you hold on.
Loved the video man, great to see these little trails out on the trail doing what they are made for. Choice of bike around the world for a reason! Keep it up man!
Right on!
Ha! Regular shoes! Gotta love people with limited experience, just sending it!
I’ve ripped through this same road, after loads of rain before. Never crashed so many times. Horrible, yet endless fun.
Love the commentary. "That was just luck". LOL
Best trail ride seen so far . Salute dont stop the vid
Ang, I have watched every video production you have made including the NEbDR 2. Waiting for the conclusion. I keep going back to the original Hurricane creek video. You amaze me with your willingness to proceed to the TAT after such a very hard trip down the Hurricane creek. With the stock gearing and stock tires, it seemed impossible, yet you did it. You are theMan.
By "willingness", I assume you mean stupidity?!
Dang! That's a fun video to watch, but I'm keeping my shiny new Trail 125 off of that road. You've earned my respect for taking it on like you did. Great job!
Thanks for checking out the vid!
We all give you credit for trying though. Have fun and Live Long and Prosper! :)
"Fuck!, oh shit, Jesus"
- Some Guy Rides
Feel what you went through
I used to race cross country on a 90 Suzuki when I was a teenager in my adult life I rode roads like that on a 1983 street legal gold wing and it fun anyway I just sold my last motorcycle and I’m 70
Good job on the film
Stay with it gets easier
I am 78 and just bought my next motorcycle, pussy.
excellent video!!!i laughed all the way.thank you
sorry to be so harsh, I do applaud your effort and tackling of hard trails. just remember to keep your spirit high no matter what the trail throws at you. its what will get you through. life is in the journey, not the destination...
Yeah you're right tho hearing his spirit just crushed at every turn and stream is kinda annoying. Maybe he's a novice rider but as kids we would be drenched and muddy and falling just gotta keep going find fun in the challenge . You cansee the morale difference in his friend who actually seemed to be enjoying the ride
Caught up on your tat trip uploads, I'm now going through your past videos. I ALMOST bought one, then I saw the crf300l that was released and ordered one of those. Having had a 125 Sachs Madass for a decade I need something with a bit more pep, but love the single cylinder small engine bikes. love your channel, keep it up!
Loved your video. Expect to get my 125 by the end of the month. Have ridden roads like in your video in my younger days. We get smarter with age. Enjoy. You did good.
Great ride
Man, that reminds me of tearing assing around the tank trails over at Lejeune! Made it look good and building those skills.
Yeah it was fun till I ripped around a bend only to come face to face with an idling Abrahms main battle tank! Yikes!
I love this ride... looks cold up there.
This video should be named: "TEAR DOWN OF A CT125" 🤔🤣
ANG, as a loyal subscriber and follower I hark back to the humble beginnings with you and Johnny Pow at Hurricane creek over and over. I even bought your Death T-shirt. I still can't imagine why you thought these trail 125's would take you to the end of the TAT in Oregon. I would have thought that Hurricane Creek would have been Buzzkill. You and your understated courage amazes me.I love all you have done and love all that you do. Just finished watching your latest video. Loved it but it did not keep my ass puckered like the TAT and BDR. Videos. For the record, I have a Trail 125, a 1982 CT 110 , and a 2022 Himalayan . 60% of this is your influence. Hoping to be back on the NC Tat when the weather warms a bit, Tracks 5,6,7 Maybe we can hook up and have a beer.
Thanks Rich! I really appreciate the kind words... Hurricane Creek was my first real foray into rough trails - and while I knew I sucked at it - i figured I'd get better on the TAT. I was wrong of course, but... Nice stable of bikes you have! Bikes and beer sounds good to me... Hope to see you at the premiere of the next series on Mar 19! ruclips.net/video/n5h-A2Tw1sM/видео.html
Looked hella fun. To be honest wasn't expecting it to power through that muddy incline.
Jesus is with you all the way lad. Hilarious Video Lads. Just got my new HONDA CT 125 Trail delivered the day before Good Friday.
Nice - congrats!
I took my Jeep on that trail years ago, great spot. I own a 2022 Honda Trail and love it, though not sure I would abuse it like that.
Thanks for the great video. I've been riding bikes (mostly street) for over thirty years. I'm now 53 and have the "adventure itch." I also have two boys in high school. I'm thinking I need three ct125's and a month long adventure!!! Screw common sense. Thanks for the giggles...
Love the commentary. Lot's of "oh shit" and 'G-damn" Good job!
Hurricane Creek Road is now closed to motorized traffic. They've put 5ft tall berms on either end to stop traffic from going down the road. Went through in April and it was definitely not a road anymore.
I hadn't heard this - wow. That's not good!
Hands down one of the best Honda Trail125 bike (and rider) torture tests I've seen. Holy crap is an understatement. You did awesome journeying on after going down and smacking up the light and instrumentation (I'm not gonna lie, I'd have said thats it I'm done at that point) but you kept going. I think you and the bike have it in you to make the big adventure ride.... your ass and tail bone may not agree though. Outstanding footage here. Hope it wasn't to pricy getting your bike back in order. Looking forward to your next episode.
We plan on doing the Smoky Mountain 500 in a few weeks. Should be fun!
@@SomeGuyRides Awesome! Looking forward to it.
Best video with
CT125
@ 1:40 , whoa ...... damn near kissed that tree 😳
Could a been worse!
This was much more fun and exciting to watch than some super moto big bore guy that flys through it.
Thise looks fun
I grew up spending a lot of time in the mountains in that same area. Used to ride dirt bikes and ATV all around there. Mostly Harmon Den area, up around to rattle snake gap, down the other side of the mountain to Del Rio, TN. All over the place. There are hundreds of miles of trails and single track roads around there. My family has family reunions very near there every year. I have to say, the camera does not to the terrain justice. Those rocks do not look as big on camera as I know they are in person. And when they are wet they are super slick. And the area you are in has boulders in the creeks. You can't walk down a creek up there on soft ground. They whole thing will be just massive rock after massive rock, with tiny little pointy rocks all in between. That is a terrible area to learn to trail ride in. Especially trying to carry any speed through the trails. They are rough. It is super fun to ride, once you have the experience to handle the crazy terrain and all of the changing conditions over every hill. Great video. I just bought my Trail 125. Looking forward to getting into some trails really soon.
The gopro flattens everything out. I was just up between Del Rio and Martha Sundquist a few weekends ago and had quite a time. Super muddy. Went down about 5 times. Had to get help from some Jeep dudes to get across a section that was just impassible. I need to go back up there - because you're right - there were just tons and tons of dirt roads/trails going every which way up in there... Lot's more to explore...
All the jeep guys thinking they are toughing it out, then see these two hooligans.
Dude you if this video does not prove how tough these little bikes are then nothing will? Yep I am getting one.
The CT125 is a beast! There’s plenty more proof on the channel- check the playlist section….
My IT200 would, love some of that country.
Holy crap man! That looked seriously intimidating, I’ve heard a lot about that trail, and have thought about getting out there, but not so sure I could get thought it in one piece on my VStrom. Great execution!!!!
He tore this bike up was a beautiful bike until he destroyed it
You did awesome! You remind me of me. I'm always telling my buddy Dave "I don't know about this Dave, Red flags are going up." and somehow I make it through. It's amazing the amount of abuse those CT125's can take. You ought to check out the KLX230. They are confidence inspiring, not too tall and a real lot of fun. I just traded mine in on a CRF300L Rally. I wish I would have kept it and bought the 300L Rally outright.
At the nd of your cideo RUclips slapped other videos on the screen blocking out the damaged partss that you posted. Could you restate that here?
As you learned, there are PLENTY of sections on the TAT that are as challenging - or more - than that trail! I did the eastern sections (TN, MS, AR) on a heavy, 650cc V-Strom. WAY too much bike. Sure, people have done the TAT on 1200 GS - but that's self-abuse in the rocks and mud. Gear up for the WORST sections of the trail is the best advice I can give. I rode the western TAT sections on a WR250R - which was perfect in the mountains but a killer on the pavement.
The headlight mounts just failing like that brought something I was concerned about to light. I purchased a butt load of Trail125 guards and racks hoping they would offer some protection for the bike in a situation like you had. But I'm thinking the guards are only as strong as what they are mounted to and mounted with. After seeing your damage just from that I am not very confident in much but maybe my actual engine crash guard and my muffler guard. The rest basically is just cosmetic and something to attach some luggage too. Got to luv plastics 😐
Dang Ang, you can't kill the unkillable, a hammer or rock will fix that😅
Complaining is the National pastime in the Netherlands🇳🇱, great way to blow of steam.
Your 'oeuvre' of YT vids is impressive, i can't seem to 'punch a dent in a stick of butter' regarding the volume of uploads.
You are blessed geographically, i have to make due with ruts left between farmlands, loose sand next to canals and the occasional gravel or dirt road in woodlands still legally accessible for motorised vehicles. Most of those are overrun with hikers, cyclists and dogwalkers in this overpopulated flatland.
Between two middle-aged grumpy farts, i secretly love it😉
That was my first real trail experience and it was as fun as I was unprepared. Yup - there's so much good stuff here. I need to stop complaining about not being able to find anything new. Don't hit any of those dog walkers!
Man that was fun watn' it! 🤣😂🤪
Makes me glad I bought mine new LOL
I know this is old video, but I'm just discovering them and I had to say, you might have had little to no experience, but you have some great instincts.
I seriously haven't gotten a ton better... But I'm now wearing proper footwear at least!
I just did hurricane creek rd. You should look into TW's, they're light, reliable and should be able to do the trail. You can still get them new if thats in your budget or can get a used one.
They love those 125 inThailand more of them on the road then cars...
It rides like this that force you to improve your biking skills!
No doubt! I'm still terrible - but I've learned a ton since then...
Did you feel like a zero when you dropped your new moped ?
Keep riding bro the skills come with the determination of never given up and practice and you proved the determination in the first crash 👍 I TDub it there isn't much of a difference between them except I have a clutch a fat rear tire and the deathwing 😂 enjoyed the video thanks for sharing 🙏
I'll get good someday!
🤣🤣OMG I laughed for 30 minutes! Finished watching all your videos and THANK YOU! I can soooo relate to your sick sense of humor, enjoyment of solo travel, hatred of narcissistic demeaning assholes in positions of power, and the absolute awesomeness of nature! Have been researching and evaluating the Royal Enfield Himalayan and you have helped convince me that's one I would enjoy. Safe travels and keep those videos coming!
Thanks for checking out the vids Daniel! I LOVE the REH. But... they are quirky and many folks have lots of problems with them. I've always had the cold start issues. And now - mine is dead. Details coming in future vids... All I'm saying is - buyer beware!
@@SomeGuyRides Thanks for the heads up!
After watching this, I believe I'd go with a CRF250L or 300L. Sorry, but I was LOL way too much.
Dude I stumbled across your videos and they are great.
BTW I don't think you will ever get monetized...lol
I know. The language is an issue. Fuck 'em!
Love it. I guess this is the same Hurricane Creek that’s on the TAT route? Something like 6 miles long? My wife and I start the TAT tomorrow morning and this will be the first off-road section we come to.
That's the one! It's really nice and a blast - but it's tough! If it's wet - definitely consider the work around! Have a blast!
I don’t care who you are, that is some funny shite!
This cracked me up! I’m not taking my shiny red bike there!
Ride the rear brake while standing up. It might help with stability.
sorry you crashed. but at least you had a video of what happened ! although im sure it wont be cheap $ or aggravation wise to fix it... it was a useful video and helped others. ( by that i mean if i was to do any offroading on this thing regularly i would do the bark biters and bbk as well as shinkos.) i know a lot of ppl wont agree but from personal experience just on an ebike i can tell you just switching out the tires made it 100% safe. of course that was after 4 or 5 crashes and a separated shoulder.... thanks for the video ! the ONLY way i would do this ( without upgrading to a BBK, shinkos, and fixing the front ((caps and adding a lil more 20w)) replacing the rear shocks.... was IF the cops were chasing me :) ( which is a great reason to carry an extra 5L of gas. ;) )
Yea this video convinced me to get a tw200
Awesome trail, any plans on upgrading the suspension?
Road it 5,000+ miles across America stock. Was that a great idea? TAT videos coming soon!
I bet the Yamaha TW 200 wold be a good bike for that too.
You took your bike off roading, remember part of the fun when something goes wrong part of the fun
😂😂😂😂😂😂 oh shit, oh fuck...I shouldn't have made it through that. 😂😂😂😂😂
You only get so good at off-roading I think. Like running it doesn't get easier, you can just do it longer.
Nothing that a few tools and some mechanical skills can’t fix. If your going to ride off road expect to have to make repairs, part of the adventure
You guys picked a rough road to start off highway riding, lol. I came down that road on my Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE, and it absolutely kicked my butt. Would've been a little easier on a lighter bike. I didn't go down, but I did not get out of 1st gear and rarely went over 10mph, not exactly my idea of fun on 2 wheels. The 4x4's can have it. In other news, looking at your phone, I noticed my Gaia app now has a 3d view, which makes it much better for following tracks.
thanks! will check out 3d view...
I know want one! I have a Honda AT and Yamaha WR, and I think I would ride this more than the WR250r lol
Damn that first drop look like U came so close to hitting ur head on the tree lol. That’s my fear off road if lol. Wish I had a place like this to ride near ny.
It's funny, I've driven I-40 through there like a million times, and I know right where y'all got on the highway. I'd wondered what that road was for. Also, your two bikes of interest, this one at the RE Him, are my two obsessions. Probably, tho, the Honda makes more sense for me, but I need a FT job before I'd consider it.
There's a few more weird roads like that on both 26 and 40 that I need to explore. I always think to try to mark them when I'm whizzing by in a car, but I never do.
Are you unable to stand on the pegs on the Trail125? No tools? First time off on a bike is a shocker. When did you notice the wonky brake lever?
I think the Honda CRF125 may be a better choice for these trail conditions and proper off road attire ? :>)
2/3 of the video sounds like "reluctant" prison sex..!!!😂🤣😂
Ha!
@@SomeGuyRides you're awesome ..! 😂🤣😂 love your video's.... Keep them coming..🤙
I had the same thought. It sounded like his first night in prison. LMAO
If you enjoyed this video please support the channel by subscribing. Thank you! tinyurl.com/SomeGuyRidesSubscribe
I was laughing with you, not at you, and cheering as you cleared the water crossings. Well done sir.
And I think you see the limitations of the available suspension travel and small wheels on the CT125. I still think a lightly loaded 250-350cc dual purpose bike would be a lot of fun on the TAT but those look like a lot of work in rough conditions. You might want to consider the Honda 300 or Yamaha XT250 instead.
Or , Yzingers??
Everything, all bent, and crooked!! Ha!! Oh shit! Like riding ditches, and hitting driveway culvert, galvanized. On my little XR75!! I flew so far!! My whole body was sprained!! Thank God the ground broke my fall!!
I think the XT250 is the absolute perfect choice for the TAT. We looked pretty seriously at those. Very light. Low seat height. Can go highway speeds if necessary. But... the CT125 is so damn ugly and is so obviously not the right choice - that it just might be the right choice... Probably a big mistake!
@@SomeGuyRides I currently have a Yamaha XT250, and I want an CT125, but in Northern Wisconsin, where I'm from, there's huge waiting list. Both bikes Are great in my opinion. Ugly yes, but it grows on you! Then it can be passed down for generations. I used to be a YZ, KX, fan in late teens, early twenties. But I'm 54 now, and just want rock solid reliability, and lots of fun! Yep, I've gotten old, but I sure have fun. TAT, sounds like an amazing trip, and you and yours, sound like your into big fun too!! It's amazing how many nephews and nieces, learned on the old CT110 1986 Honda, graduated to rocket ships, and they all want the new trail125, to putt around on there land, or ride the firelanes.😁
@@SomeGuyRides One last thing. I was chuckling with you, when it went down on you. Sorry. But, dang it, I've had so many stupid falls!! Ha!
"This shit fuck ... this shit I fell on ... ahh...ohhh...oohh ... ahahah just f****** all over the place" @24:00
Just ask yourself would you have more fun riding that trail or around a parking lot at the Mall
“This is just wrong.” 🤣
You can do this road with the Himalayan, for sure (specially with good knobby tires and switch to disconnect ABS). But it is more about the pilot riding skills, patience and endurance than the perfect bike. A tall and light dual sport is better suited thou.
You are badass.
Bad at motorcycle riding. And an Ass. Accurate!
Please excuse me if I’m out of line, but this trail looks like a lot of fun. I wouldn’t do it on my Africa Twin but I think it might be fun on my Himalayan. I think you need to slow down and enjoy yourself. If it’s not fun why do it? I think you are putting too much pressure on yourself. I think you are doing well. Yeah, it is frustrating to fall but we’ve all done it. It is even more frustrating when you break things but there is always MasterCard, just be thankful you’re not broken. I hate mud and water scares me. There is shit under the surface of that muddy water that can mess you up.
I might try it on the REH someday. Right now I don't feel confident enough on that heavier bike. Will get there!
Something about beating this bike up just feels right
Sorry to see you damaged your machine. Best of luck with the repairs.
Thanks 👍
The sounds u make🤣
I'd say ya learned a thing or two about trail riding. Don't give up
What tires where you using?
Those were stock. I later switched to Shinko 244s - which I like a lot.
@@SomeGuyRides Tires make a huge difference. Stock tires are for the mall.
Hurricane creek open year round to ride?
That's a great question and I honestly don't know the answer. Give the Pisgah Ranger Station a call - they're super nice and very helpful... I've bothered them a million times asking about gates etc... They'll know!
There’s a place in Tennessee called the trials training center. You should take your trail there and spend a week. You’d never regret it and you’d leave a much much better rider on and off road.
Johnny Pow knows about that I think. Yes - I definitely need to do that some day!
How tall you’re guys?
Johnny Pow is probably 6' something. I'm like 5' 8"...
he crys like it thats time of the month for him
Just a daily commute for some countries these are sold in.......
Lesson number one. Ride at your own pace not someone else's.
I thik you did well there, if you rode trails like this every other week, in 6 months it would be effortless... what condition your little Honda would be in is another story!
:)))))))))))))))))))))))) cannot imagine a better test for tat
I'd go on that goose shit trail maybe once every five years...looks like work not fun. You certainly demonstrated the CT's off road capability.
If you hit that trail from the opposite direction it's more fun. Come in from 40
I've only done it this direction - twice on my DR650 then once here. This was the most muddy of the three
Would have been impossible to take it from that side - would have to have been on 40 for way too long on the CT125 to go that way.
