    One of the most tragic parts was how the fangirl and the popstar was sent to the void in the end. It really showed how flawed the system was and why Nona wanted to change it with Decim.

    I think that one important aspect is that they managed to pull off a black swan event: giving us an ending that had to be expected in hindsight, but was still surprising for us...
    It became clear that she had died and that he couldn't judge her the usual way. The twist was how she could be judged and how they react...

    Chiyuki's own death did actually strike a cord with me. It reminded me of the reason why I never considered the path she ended up taking. I didn't want to give my family the pain that Chiyuki's Mother went through. It was heartbreaking watching her try to apologize to her Mother for causing such heavy grief to her. So I have to disagree with you on the ending being terrible. I adore the ending of this series and bawled my eyes out when watching it unfold. I really wanted to hug Chiyuki, seriously.
    Also not be rude, but so what if her death wasn't as gory or grandiose as previous ones? The old lady before her didn't get a bad way out herself, hell I don't even remember how she died or lived, beyond maybe simply making it to old age and dying peacefully. The old lady was in my opinion to show us that Decim had come to understand that he can do his job better by getting involved with those he judges. But it also in a way foreshadowed Chiyuki's story a smidge. That hers wasn't nearly so drama filled or crazy, her end wasn't mundane, just different. Suicide is certainly not mundane in my opinion, and the reactions the characters had prove that point I feel. Hell people's reactions to it in real life prove that point as well. Suicide doesn't just hurt the person committing the act, who devastates those left behind in the wake of it. This series shows many times the consequences of one's actions and how they can screw things up. The husband got himself and his wife killed over a misunderstanding that he easily could've just calmly asked about instead of being reckless on the road in his misplaced anger. The Idol was killed by a vengeful woman because she blamed him for the death of her sister who adored him. Not that her reasoning was at all right. Chiyuki also learns that her death affected those she left behind, especially her Mother who still grieves the loss of her child.
    Just some food for thought on that. Again not trying to be mean or anything, just giving my two cents. Just saying that I found this ending to be both beautiful and a massive gut punch emotionally. That's certainly not a bad thing either, not to me.

      I try to be, though admittedly I still say stupid shit sometimes. Though while the more recent example got deleted, it was more or less a wake up call to try harder to not say stuff in anger on the platform. Think I've been doing better on that since then. Regardless thank you for those words. If you watch EmceeProphit's most recent video on Final Fantasy 9 you'll see why I hold onto the thoughts of what would happen if I were to suddenly die. Won't discuss it here, as I'm not so comfortable mentioning the whole story here. Besides, EmceeProphit's vid is very much worth it.

      i usually dont think suicide to be selfish but Chiyuki's was a very selfish one to me. Her mother gave her life but gave HER skates , that started with innocence and to enjoyed with family and soon friends but Chiyuki took it upon herself to make skating her whole life and something as dramatic to die over without any regard of friends or family she pushed away. No one put the pressure of skating on her head and said "this is what you have to do to be loved" she had a good season of being a child and growing up until that chapter was over in her life. It makes me wonder before her accident was she a good friend to others? or was she the type to let things go to her head and thought she was better than others which is why she had no friends left. She put her worth into a frivolous hobby as skating and no one forced her to. She couldnt wait to die just because she couldn't turn skating into a career, she didn't lose her ability to walk or anything. If her mental health was that bad she shouldve talked, she had the floor but alas she killed herself which seemed to be spontaneous horror, without a thought, i couldn't imagine what the sight and after burial mustve been. Showing no signs of mental illness until a hobby is taken away and still unaware of what seems to just be "sad" emotion turns out is gravely worse than that even **apparently** . So then she shows at the bar remembering her death but in no shape to play the game so needed her memory wiped to finally get remorse (emotion) out of her. tbh it's hard to feel bad for her, i feel for her mother and father more.

    What I love about the show is that the story only covers a small spec of time in the overall greater narrative. The events that transpire throughout the 12 episodes leave no real conclusion, no closure, no conclusive explanation for all of the questions the series leaves us with, nothing. The ending of the series serves as the spark that we can hope will one day lead to the change that Nona is striving for, although we as the audience will never get to see it.

      I do love when series have the ability to pull of "unsatisfactory" endings like that, especially here where it was so relevant, or almost needed. The idea of questioning who people are would have been lost if the series came out and told us with a "satisfying" resolution

    This anime is honestly one of my all time favorites, even as incomplete and unsatisfying as it feels in the grand scheme of things. The fleeting but profound significance of Chiyuki’s influence in Decim’s existence was beautiful to watch. I think the ending is a wonderfully sad example of thematic resonance. You could be going through the worst moments of your life or following the norm to a T, life moves on but that doesn’t make it entirely insignificant.
    Decim’s accumulation of human experiences throughout the anime was an emotional roller coaster to say the least. He’s really walking the line that divides his understanding of human emotions and his programming as an arbiter. Chiyuki’s pull toward the understanding side has been pushing his development alongside what he takes in from the various judgements, so when she completely turns everything she taught him on its head, it essentially rubber bands him head first into wanting to understand how her life gave her this outlook, which is so on the contrary to their prior time together.
    She really gave him something special, as fleeting as it was.

  • @WawkaNaPisjune
    @WawkaNaPisjune 2 года назад +53

    In the end of the day, Decim had to judge Chiyuki and he was running out of time, because human souls cant stay in Quindecim forever. I think the scene at the end, where he offered her to get revived in exchange for someone elses life, was just a test, because reviving her doesn't make a sense. First, she would instantly commit suicide again, because her memories of Quindecim would get erased. Second, she would end up at Quindecim again someday, because death in unavoidable.

    I truly don't blame you for thinking like this. Only people who tried to kill themselves can truly understand how much that inner void affects us and how much it hurts to live once major depression sets in. The series ending breaks my soul every time I watch. The message is pretty damn clear and I don't see how it can be misinterpreted or considered "bad" (??) when it perfectly conveys to the watcher that: 1: Life (emotions) always involves suffering. 2: Life is [extremely] unfair. And 3: Most humans live without even seeking a purpose in/for their life, realizing only in death how their life was either completely "in vain" (as in not involving true love for anyone/anything) or distorted beyond any notion of justice, sometimes so much so that they feel they acted positively in the world when remembering all of their life and clearly would do it all over again, with no regret. The judging system is supposed to be unfair (by human standards) and unchangeable, just as life and its conditions are.

    • @ProfessorViral
      @ProfessorViral  Год назад +1

      I think there's a misunderstanding, I'm not saying the message here is bad. I'm not even really talking thematically, im simply saying its a "bad" ending in that its sad and not the ideal outcome for the characters, and that they did such an ending very well. It also feels weird to assume that I don't struggle with depression or similar feelings in my life

    • @kcx2678
      @kcx2678 11 месяцев назад

      I completely agree with you. I think the show wanted to portray that life (and death) is unfair. There is always suffering but there can also be good days. There is no true good or true bad. Judging others (and their actions) is difficult (and can be biased). And that death/ending is the only certain thing in life.

  • @alzingafagan7501

    Death Parade is something of a pearl in the midst of horseshit. Not saying that as a bad thing but as this ironic picture where something so beautiful is smack dab in the middle of something absolutely unappealing. Chiyuki's story was far more mundane than all of the stories in the series and Nono's plan was typically flawed as it hedged on a game of chance, where Deckham would change and get more involved in his cases, outside of the usual button prompts to cause a change in the situation to exact emotion out of the players, and that the players themselves would choose a different choice that came about from their own will to live and change. Even, (forgot his name) Deckham's rival tried to get the girl who was alongside him to make a different choice ended up not achieving anything at all because she chose to go to the abyss with her idol. All in all it was a the best bad ending as well as an oddly satisfying one as well. One example i can think of is the ending for Claymore, where it deviated from the source because it was all caught up with the series but it also left no room for any sort of continuation either. Priscilla still lives, Raki and Clare were reunited and most of the cast along with them went about their lives like it was a Sunday morning. That ending dud nothing for the anime failed to the up major plot points that were revealed in place of a Deus Ex Machina to end it.

    • @ProfessorViral
      @ProfessorViral  3 года назад +6

      Yeah, on the surface Death Parade sounds interesting, and shocking, but if you explained Chiyuki and Decim to me without the ending it would almost sound boring. But it just pushes ahead through the raw emotion of all the judgements so perfectly, these near boring characters become outlets for even more emotion in a brilliant way. One of the most bold anime out there for sure

    The final test where Decim simulated the entire life of Chiyuki is nothing but pure evil.. if someone who had emotions did that.
    But her thought process of knowing she died, regretting the pain she lets her mother suffer, knowing that this was a NEVER undoable & eternal mistake, spending the rest of your mentally conscious time in a place that will never fulfill you.. just this pure hopelessness is insufferable and a pain to watch 💔
    There is not a single piece of hope left in Chiyukis heart, but then there comes this moment, where you find hope and realize there IS a way out of all this. Realizing that there’s a possibility lets all your feelings run through your body all at once, because life means hope and her having hope again made her feel so intense because she felt close to life again.
    But then seeing that this was nothing but a simulation, means taking away all her hope and killing the thought of living again, that grew in her heart 🥺😭
    This just isn’t fair, no one deserves to go through this emotional roller coaster :(
    I’m actually surprised how well and composed she reacted in the end, because me despite being a person that forgives easily, I don’t think I could do that.. idek if I could stop crying after seeing that all of it was fake, my tears wouldn’t stop shedding until my body would’ve fully stopped existing

    My favorite part of death parade is they never really explain why anyone was sent where they were sent… there’s no correctness or incorrectness from our pov cause we truly don’t know how they are judged even if we have our own personal opinion. The arbiters are so annoyingly human but not its almost uncanny valley. Like the awful detective said they are unreadable. Their characters are all so preformative that you can feel the insincerity behind the “emotions” they display. They make you wonder if the system is right and we humans just lack the perspective to see it or if no body is right and the arbiters are just as ignorant as us.

  • @GusJKlaus
    @GusJKlaus 2 года назад +3

    I think it worked because it is just a nihilist view of the relation of death and life, of how as we go, even if there's something after, the previous world is out of our reach, and how life is meaningless (it has the meaning that we give to it, but no divine purpose and stuff). And near the ending, of how depression can turn the person into a living dead, and how closing youself in, and shutting who loves you alway also break others, and of how you can't undo somethings. And of how this is how life and death works, despite our will.

    I want a Season 2 so bad 😭 this show is too good and there's so much room for story development. They basically already started a Deathnote crossover at the end (and slightly incorporated it into the background storyline) and it would be very satisfying to see what they would decide to do with his soul seeing as how he cant go to heaven or hell. I wanna see Decim be the one to change things. More backstory on Oculus? And maybe we could learn why Genti really harbors so much anger with him in the afterlife? So many possibilities.

That left her mannequin behind which Decim got from that floor where the mannequins are dumped when the people are gone. I believe that’s what he dressed up. I think the ending was not terrible...Through the anime we could'not place ourself really into Chi-san place because Decim didnt know her , didnt understand human feelings. It is like the whole anime tries to play a game with you- you died and need to remember where you've come from and understand the true feelinngs behind people's acts...we play along with Chiyuki almost like the anime wants us to be Decim, re live and understand feelings. The end did not need more to it, the trial of Chi-san was other from the rest because Decim tried to understand her, relly know her feelings because after that he would be able to judge where to send her , what fate to give her... This is what Nona wanted, why to give feelings to the arbitrators, because simply you cant judge a person from so little time playing death games it wont show the real side of ppl.. because fear is the most intense feelings it pushes other feelings to the back...and finally Decim is back to square one with a smile because he understands that you can possibly get to know every passing soul(2/second) based on one-time games but he tries his best. 10/10 will watch again

    Oh man - I made be overthinking this but 3:44 made me realize that, even as a character, Chiyuki is still the mannequin that we are implanting our emotions and memories on.

    Great video, thank you, but damn. I guess I was looking for a discussion of more specific things like why she was hiding behind the bar after her judgement. Was that one of his dolls? Also, wouldn’t his memory of her be erased anyway? If that’s true then even that slight smile is for nothing lol. Love the show though! I think the story of the killers was fascinating, didn’t see the twist coming :)

    Such a great show by far after finishing it for the first time. Ending clicked very well that the concepts of what the show presented brought a whole lot of thinking to ponder much about the differences between human emotions versus others without.
    Nice show by far getting to it

      I'm a huge fan of this style of cycical ending with a slight twist. It shows us change, how much it cost, but not the result of it. We have to consider the rest, and the worth of it ourselves. I think that's why I love them haha

I thought that they would be save thanks to the emotional attachment of decim and Ginti. It's like swallowing something unpleasant but you have to eat it regardless of the consequences that follows. Episode 1, 11 and 12 were all awful imo. The woman went to the void to save the man... they didnt try to resolve that or care. 11 they both went into the void ginty lied. 12 she is reincarnated and decim has a doll of her sitting there. Probably one of the worst animes ive ever seen.... now a good anime that had bad stuff in it is cyberpunk edgerunners.... now thats an actual good anime.

    Honestly the show feel overrated, I didn't really feel attached to the characters.
