      I am wondering 🤔 there are certain plants that thrive in Michigan for no other reason than the love for dry/quick draining, sandy soil. For example, blueberry, butterfly bush, caryopteris, sedum. I cannot grow these things in my heavy, clay soil no matter how hard I try. I wonder if that could be the story with this plant for you @itsastckup?

    So beautiful! Heidi, are the coneflower seeds sterile, or will they seed around? I have an area where I would like them to reseed or I will reseed them there. Thank you

    • @JWHealing
      @JWHealing 11 месяцев назад +2

      In case they don’t answer, often those cute named ones are hybrids and so the seeds are viable but the new plants you grow from that seed is not true to type. If you get a variety that says it’s “OP” or open pollinated then the seeds would be true to type, meaning the baby plants would have the same look & characteristics of the mother plant. You could grow your own open pollinated echinacea varieties from a seed company online just make sure it says open pollinated for your variety.

    • @gardencrossings
      @gardencrossings  11 месяцев назад +2

      The Sombreros are seed varieties. Usually the seedlings will be pink in color. The 'mother plant' remains the color that was purchased.

    Idk why my echinacea don’t
    Last in my garden until fall. They turn black around this time. It’s so frustrating. Zone 7a

    • @JWHealing
      @JWHealing 11 месяцев назад +1

      You mean the blooms turn black or the whole plant? Do you deadhead?

    • @jacquelineguzman174
      @jacquelineguzman174 11 месяцев назад

      @@JWHealing the blooms

    • @JWHealing
      @JWHealing 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@jacquelineguzman174 Echinacea is one of those flowers were you should deadhead the old blooms, meaning prune them off, during the entire blooming season. That way the plant doesn't waste energy in seed production and continues to produces more flowers. Plants want to spread so they want to make a bunch of seed. If you keep pruning off the spent flowers then they keep making new flowers. If instead you do not deadhead and just leave all the blooms to dry out and go to seed then the plant figures it's done it's job and can rest now. Make sense? Everyone's echinacea blooms would turn black if they didn't deadhead along the way. I just leave the final blooms of the season just before frost for the birds to get the seed over the winter, but otherwise I prune throughout summer & fall. That way you can dry those blooms yourself away from the plant and save for seed or use the old dry flower heads in a medicinal tea. I wouldn't save the hybrid varieties for seed, only an open pollinated variety, but any old spent bloom is OK for tea.
