- I recently returned to Punishing Gray Raven and I am so glad I did. The game has only continued to improve, getting better and better overtime. And we have now entered into the golden era of the game. Which is why I recommend any new players to start the game now. You can easily get Bianca Stigmata through the gacha. Then you'll be able to make the best physical team via the two free S rank selectors they give you. And after assembling a great team you have so much story content to go through, it is amazing. Which is why I'm confident in stating that Punishing Gray Raven is a masterpiece.

PGR is easily my favorite gacha. Right now we entered the "golden age" as Bianca Stigmata just released, one of the strongest characters ever made. Following months will feature similar titans with the culmination in February / March when we will get Alpha Crimson Weave, the most iconic character from the game, which can be seen in tons of PGR boss fights made by YTbers with CN accounts. If you're wondering whether the game is wroth your time: yes, especially now. Tons of free stuff for f2p and great value of money for spenders. Best of all, every new character comes up with 100% rate up banner. It's very easy to get the characters you want. No need to sweat over 50:50. The only gamble is weapons. Those come in 80% rate up banners which, lets be honest, is far better than any similar title offers.

Which hits even harder since the pity rates are SIGNIFICANTLY lower sometimes even 1/3rd or 1/5th the hard pity rates of some other games(honkai impact 3rd needing up to 300 pulls for S rank & gear, and 130 pulls for SP suits, genshin & star rails being as much as 180 pulls just for a single 5 star character copy and not accounting for `signature weapons`). In addition to letting you scalp as much as a single rank up (30ish frags) from a game mode with NO GACHA REQUIRED besides owning the unit before hand, that rewards you with currency to get the frags directly, not making the game mode`s major earning being even more gacha currency to flop at pulls instead.
Punishing gray raven is literally the definition of games can still be gacha but still be excessively more generous and likely still makes a significant profit with likely way less production cost by likely focusing more on giving a polished product then demand more for a Destroyer of Potatoes. AKA the reverse of how newer movies put way too much into development & advertisement that they cant simply settle for breaking even on production cost, they have to usually make TRIPLE what they spent to also re-coup the costs for advertisment, merchandising and investors to be considered `decent`.
The closest mobile game i recall ever being as generous is cookie run kingdom, because they give shards that pile up to direct purchasing frags as you do gacha, but the grind is alot worst since you need to chase MULTIPLE rank ups on units and they have so many tiers of rarity then just 2 kinds that a large portion of them are just limited time only crap or entirely locked behind paid currency only.
Anyone beyond that already shuts itself down by not having an actual hard pity system but usually makes it up with a tedious grind system that still relies on rng-sus to acquire `certain characters` to have the right to unlock the form you want via a terrible rng-sus system that is essentially gacha rolls on dungeon clears, except its using resources you get over time instead of resources you get from achievements & spending.
Bro i lost 50 50 twice in weapons banner. Got pulao and garnets weapon before i got bianca. Though i did get bianca first 10 pull and 2 of her sig pets in one pull. All within 17k bc. So kinda happy.

Been playing the game since launch and seeing how the game improved is such a good feeling from the characters to the story (especially the story), I love this game,since the beginning, but the first few chapters are..yeah mid at best though it become sooo good later. One of my favorites Gacha games and just one of my favorites games of all time.

Finally, a review of PGR that appreciates the lore! The story is so good in the later chapters, it's just a shame not everyone is a fan of the LN style and prefer something more graphical. There are a few minor localization errors here and there but I think the localization team has done a fantastic job with bringing across the beauty of the writing. One thing I'd like to add is that the interludes (character background stories) are, at times, even better than the main one. Your presentation style is easy to follow and entertaining, kudos and have a sub!
PGR story is good and and can be amazing, but the delivery and localization is just bad
it getting better now, but I wish Kuro hire an actual professional story writer for the story, and not just translated and localized
it really can be better if the translation then review by professional story writer to be delivered as story perfectly
The story is not that good and they should just completely rewrite the first 12 chapters, delete more than half of the first 9 and make something worth out of it, if there was anything good in there at all, I can't even remember.
Character interludes are more enjoyable than the main story until youre halfway on "fake ascension"
The argument in the other hand is pretty good but it's half taken from nier automata.

Great review, I think the reason why early chapters are so dull is Kuro planned to have them voice acted at some point but from chapter 9 and forward they said "screw this, lets write the best sci-fi story ever" and so the last few chapters feels like a really good sci-fi novel, this is just my guess don't take it as fact

Great video! I started playing pgr at launch.. stopped for a few months then came back and still playing to this day ( the new patch is insanee ). I'm certain I'll be playing for years to come , such a great game with amazing combat and magnificent story.i highly recommend it to anyone who's on the fence as the new patch released yesterday has so much free stuff!

Pretty good video overall, I would like to say one thing though: I don't think the lack of voice acting is a budget issue. PGR doesn't pull Genshin amounts of money but it's still doing very well. The limitations Kuro is working around, I believe, is storage space. Voice acting takes A LOT of space and I think PGR chose to be rather lightweight but forsake voice acting
That's what I'm inclined to believe as well, Kuro wants PGR to be as mobile friendly as possible.
Definitely not enough space that it would make it take too much space. 3-4 gbs at max

PGR is one of the best games i've ever played! Hell, it even made me quit PC gaming for like 1 year or so! I literally feel satisfied playing only this game! We probably won't see a game as good as this one on mobile for quite some time! ZZZ is coming but even that is up there but not on the same level.

The one issue i might have with it is the gatcha system! I heard they go for the Ghenshin system

PGR feels rewarding knowing I can get every character if i spend time playing! Other gatchas feel like you're gambling your time!

Bro, PGR's gameplay is an absolute masterpiece.
Tbh I don´t feel like powercreep is even that big of a problem since yeah Stigmata Bianca outshines Abyss Alpha, but 1) Alpha doesn't just become a useless or reduntant unit; 2) you would need max meta team only if you aim for the best scores in Warzone/PainCage/Guild and the difference between rewards between top-score and average score isn't that mindblowing, so you can just take it easy. It's good to have meta units but they are far from necessary if you're a casual player.
Although first 8 chapters being a slog to read through is quite a a begginer-experience problem, yeah
powercreep isn't a problem tbh, cuz u still can use them in babel and celica's trial, and nrp (norman revival plan) and the upcoming boss fights event, they're not power creeped at all, just in warzone, and ppc. as for me who likes playing hardcore like soloing boss, new character showcase, i don't really like competing against tryhardwhales fiting for number 1 slots in ppc or warzone, i can only showcase my skills in babel or any kind of boss things

The optimization is a russian roulette, a friend of mine wiht a shitty pc can run it meanwhile other with a RTX of 4000 series gets stuttering sometimes.
The combat is good, not as pgr but honestly it is better like this, otherwise people would not clear content.

The echoes needs work, the purple ones are useless at high level and the rng must be reduced.

The Lost Chapter had voice acting when Qu was having her speech right before the war began. And that shi# hit hard asf. Until now, every time I hear Hikari(the bgm playing in that particular point in that chapter), I remember Qu's speech and me playing her and bruteforcing through corrupted. It really felt like I was in the game. I was so invested in the narrative it was bliss.
[SPOILER WARNING] ⚠️⚠️🚨
My similar experiences in each chapter:
Fake ascension - Lucia and Commandant fighting for Luna.
Echo Aria - Selena going through literal hell.
Imprisoned Sight - Chrome being the momma that he is and confronting Vonnegut like a chad.
Inscription of Labyrinth - The way Roland and Cerberus perspective intersect and converge into them fighting Voodoo.
Last Spark - Vera and Commandant getting the first glimpse of Atlantis(Not sure if this was the right name of the place), that was majestic and breathtaking, it took me out of my bed and teleported me into the PGR universe.
Evernight Beat - The story if the three scavengers and only one of them surviving (Roland orchestrated that, he's a literal Clown idk if I love him or hate him lmao), that part of the chapter had me on the edge of my seat for those three.
Surviving Lucem - Idek where to start. The whole part in the underground basement and Liv singing for them. The woman who gave birth to Cosette. The train incident and Noan dying. The church where everyone fought in their very last breath till Liv comes and saves everyone, she literally absorbed punishing virus in exchange of her suffering for a lifetime because of physical trauma. And inside Liv's mind, she's absorbing punishing virus it only makes sense she's going through hell in her mind, it's almost like broke the matrix and sh#t.
Recitativo and Onwards, I haven't read.
I only read the story until fake ascension before I quit, I'm looking forward to experience the rest of this when I come back, thanks for sharing your experience

This is quite literally the best game I’ve ever played in the gacha genre, just got bianca and her weapon it is all slowly coming together and then boom I’ve got a juicer team lmao
Great Video. I started playing during PC launch again since I really don't like playing Action games on mobile phones + Heavy motivation Boost from an Alpha Crimson Weave Video. I'm at Chapter 12 now and I'm so hooked to the game and story immensely. I'm not a fan of Novel type writing/style but The writing in this game is so good and immersive that I get lost in it and never get bored I started to like reading again. Combat Is so interactive and feels so good when you know how to play the characters and learn the mechanics.
Ok, now to Vera. I accidentally got Rozen during my first 10 pull while trying to get No.21. I was curious about her story since I liked her design an am obsessive over the color red+black. And that's when I realized how deep the story telling is in this game even for the characters alone. I haven't felt so emotionally attached to a character that much during character development in other games.
And then I found Vera: Garnet. My god, really cool design, really good sound effects + visuals, fluid movement, badass combat (Spear Lunge sends me to heaven) and on top of that That an Assertive dominant personality (I wonder if Markiplier would liker her). She carries my Team with ease and it's so fkn fun.
I picked this game to substitute HI3 as It was getting out of hand (how much i spent did not equal to the enjoyment i got) back then.
Alpha was my first love. Then I got excited with Bianca Veritas gameplay, i mean, its rare to have a bow user be this good gameplay-wise. Then I met my true love for this game, yep, Vera. Regardless of her frame, I love her. Her dark support frame is not bad, but holy cow her garnet frame felt so damn good to play.
Granted that I could not play everyday nor could I spend alot of money, but i managed to obtain most of the units i want. This game is, as you have said, a 9/10 masterpiece. My -1 however is due to the difference we have compared to CN server in term of schedules/free time between events.

I think thats all the unit i dont have. Im f2p so i can say the game pretty not damn brutal for f2p. Also plume 🤣 stick to glory and wangshi. Cant wait for bombinata. Pretty much have all the team. I was too hyped for Wuthering Waves to the point I just looked up what other games did Kuro Games made and found Punishing Gray Raven. I thought why not try it out and now I am hooked.
This is a masterpiece That will never leave my phone. I may uninstall all other games but this one is staying. I was lucky to start at a good time on Crome Glory patch because I was able to get the best Selena Skin for free.
Some friends got me hooked on this game back in April and I’m absolutely in love with it.

16:03 Advice for new players out there, if you meet the situation you can actually just invest in A ranks(with leaps). The A ranks in this game are actually pretty good, an invested Vera Rozen can out perform Selena depend on the team comp she's in. And a full A rank team can at least let you stay on Elite Warzone.
I know it costs a lot of resources to fully leap an A rank character or get them to SSS but those resources won't go to waste even if you get their S rank replacement later on because you will need them for Babel anyway.
Same case for un characters, a team of 3 different elements random uns will carry you to at least Elite Warzone, and can still be useful for Operation Un and Babel later on.
TLDR build Watanabe Astral, leap him and use him until Lamia comes out (s rank dark attacker, less than a year from now)
He’s really strong and you can SS him easily
I started this game when It started on global when looking for a game similar to honkai, I'm so glad i pulled thorugh the first chapters, while the story itself its a bit too despair fueled for my taste the writing is amazing in latest chapters and the gameplay quickly became the best action gacha currently, I also agree that more people should play it
The first chapters did a good job of showing rather than telling how bad the current situation is. True at first, it shows despair, but as it progresses, you also see how resilient humanity is not by seeing the major characters struggle but seeing how some of the common folks survive in this mess. And I think that's something only a few games do.

Great review sir; tbh new players should focus on what they like the most, even though the physical team is right there as you pointed, as those early game moments might make the experience more memorable, like struggling on Lightning stages only to feel the difference that Garnet makes, holy...

PGR is one of those games where i don't feel bad spending on it because I have visible proof that money spent is going back into the game. All you need to do is look at the Rosetta fight, a classic that people went crazy for originally.....then look at the second most recent fight with lamia and its night and day not only with the boss spectacle, but the construct spectacle as well.
Also genuinely I'm not bothered by negative events stories too much, but chapter 17 DID THINGS to me. After that first third I legit had to step away for the night which is something that has never happened. I was just empty and broken.....10/10 would recommend.
Thank you for making an entire dedicated video to introduce everything you need to know about the game and pretty much convince me to play it, unlike HI3rd where everything is so vague and obscure that the only reason I started playing was because of an upcoming character weilding a lightsaber.
Solid game, only stopped playing because it almost fractured my thumb, and my phone couldn’t keep up with the new visual effects. That been said this game has a lot of potential, and I am rooting for it as always.

Around 4 months ago, I had time to try out Punishing Gray Raven thanks to Tsunal's recommendation.
HOLY it was amazing. The writing quality was absolutely top notch. Some of these stories rank as some of my favourite stories in fiction period. I especially like the Kowloong battle chapter, Extra Story 3, Extra Story 4, Chapter 17(of course) and Chapter 16 Hidden Story. Kurogame's writing strength to me lies in depicting characters emotions in very difficult situations and grand narratives.

Just started playing this game. I'm not much of a gacha fan but the core gameplay seems hype enough to put up with it. Even at the beginning, I like the story premise and immediately got NieR vibes. Just wish the text wasn't the size of ants on mobile. 😅
Coming as first day from Alpha vs Rosetta gameplay, now look how it grow in CN version it's really insane and I'm proud of KuroGoat despite being underrated AF
Personally I think Newbie problem is just resources management because how much Serum it need to upgrade characters
IMO getting the old S-rank also quite unnecessary unless you want to be competitive
A-ranks already good and some have leap upgrade, still it doesn't cover all the roster it still lacking ( RIP A-rank Fire/Ice tank haven't exist yet) (ChangWho)
Future character have much more depth gameplay which make it better and future A-ranks Attacker like Noctis and BRS also having Next Gen mechanic which really good for Newbie and Casual players to play and enjoy

Playing a commandant doesn't feel like "you're TRYING to save the world" it feels more like "you're trying to save your TEAM." In most of the stories the only thing commandant can do is save those near them but anything beyond that is a death sentence.

Been playing this game since it went to global and I love it. It’s gacha is one of the best, gameplay is amazing, story is amazing, and music is amazing. And it takes a lot of skill with certain stuff
I started the game for Watanabe, then ended taking a long break around when chapter 14 released (global player here xD) but then the story hooked me this week when I came back to play 14-20. I just made it to 19 and omg you are so right about chapter 17. I actually did read all those “boring chapters” before my break. The pay off was so gooood.

The Golden Age of PGR has started and this is the best time to play. I've been playing it almost non-stop since the update landed. I agree with everything in this video and yes, PGR is a great action game among lackluster games. The combat is unmatched, and with Wuthering Waves coming, the future be looking bright.

I love the rougue like mode, doesn't even need to have the characters, you can use anyone you get in the mode and its not restricted to who you pulled and will various buffs and all its very fun

Back than there was no pc launcher so i never kept playing it further but you can now play with Controller on pc too!!!! Thats so epic man. Im happy to be back

i have to say though in term of power creep i myself dont care a lot. i got my alpha some time ago and i built her to the max i could as f2p, she is fun to play and i have lots of playing the levels with her cant wait for crimson weaver

While the first chapters are a bit boring i would still recommend to at least read a summary. They contain a lot of worldbuilding and there will be multiple callbacks ro information gathered in them
True. I still read them. And once I noticed some parts of the earlier chapters are a foreshadowing of what's to come, I learn to appreciate them more.
For instance, the grafitti artist corrupted talking about sagemachina which apparently is Nanami whoch will be revealed after so many chapters.
Do people really think its that bad? Maybe its because i actually read books (300-400 pages) but the early chapters didn't bother me at all and i quite enjoyed them.

I played since the PC Client on global and men, this game is meant to be played on PC.

I've been playing this game every since it dropped and i have not regretted my decision, watching my roster grow and the story that has left my tissue budget dry from all the crying I've done be constantly improving is truly something I'm glad to be part of.
Needless to say, this one's a keeper for all wanting a solid action game and a forgiving and f2p friendly gacha. Hell I can recommend this game on the fact that the gear isn't full of random stats you have to keep spending resin to get just to be complete dogshit (cough), all gear have the same stats, the only stats you roll for are optional upgrades which are easy to do because the game showers you in it's currency by just playing the game.
I've never felt the need to swipe my card, everything i got was from just playing when i felt like it and taking part in every event the game gives, and I have a bunch of skins and almost all the frames without a single cent spent.
