Brave? Who are you trying to kid here? He ruined his country's economy, massacred 30,000 of his own people, ran a terrorist group which shot down civillian airlines coming from Rhodesia - his guerillas then shot surviving passengers and air hostesses to death, his army murdered white farmers across the country, we can go on with this.
This man was a coward who eventually got toppled, better late than never.

It is a difficult situation! Mugabe definitely has a bone to pick with former colonials, a defence for his presidency for many years. What is the script that is running in his head?. Is it something to do with slavery, its injustices, and the fact that Africa had a right not to be colonised? Is democracy, whatever it means, really for Africa? Could other more stable governance systems be better than the ever constant need for re-elections in democratic systems? Africa is different. What now?

Just three years after Zimbabwe’s independence from Britain, Robert Mugabe sent the army’s North Korean-trained Fifth Brigade into Matabeleland to crush dissidents and former guerrillas loyal to liberation war rival Joshua Nkomo.
Over the next two years, human rights groups estimate as many as 20,000 people died in western Zimbabwe, most of them ethnic Ndebele. The indiscriminate purge came to be known in the Shona language as Gukurahundi: “the early rain that washes away the chaff”. Zimbabwe’s opposition called it genocide.

When I replied to forevah's post I said that the Queen ostensibly chooses the prime minister. Ostensibly being the operative word here since it is actually the ruling party that makes the choice of an member of the government already elected. In effect she chooses their choice, but constitutionally she makes the choice. So there. :-)

Not once has this man offered his resignation-that despite inflation reaching over 1 million % during his term! Sure, its not all his fault, usay. That's not how the parliamentary system works. You shud know that as a former diplomat unless u received ur credentials from a crackerjack box. The Queen is head of State & Mr. Brown is head of government. He is in fact the 'first' or 'prime' minister among the ministers which the Queen has ostensibly chosen to form her government. He is elected to his seat and he is chosen by the unbrutalized & willing electors of his constituency. This is in stark contrast to other 'democracies'.

Often it is purely symbolic, but it is done to preserve integrity and out of recogntion of the fact that certain things r unacceptable from a leadership.

Thr are not wanted there, in particular the UK, & this constant meddling is counterproductive. The aid to Africa in general is also counter productive. The scary thing is that some people still supports Mugabe. They see him as a true African leader, as Harenay said in his post. They are blind to the official inflation rate of 26,000% in the country(more likely more), the 80% unemployment rate and the decreasing crop production, not to mention the crimes against humanity made by the Mugabe-goverment. I would rather see people like Mandela, Tsvangirai or Raila Odinga(Kenya) represent the true African leaders.

He looks cornered, stuck for words, and pathetic.
If you look at his body language these past 2/3 months- and especially on election day- it is very different from the self-assured confidence he has displayed for the past 3 decades.
He honestly looks desperate, isolated, and humiliated. Getting angry and emotional constantly..really weak and out of conrol.
He has lost control recently. His generals dictated to him that he must stay in office- he was ready to go.
