I watched a couple of other videos and in that half an hour or so I didn't learn near as much as I did in the 6:18 of this. There's no mistaking excellent communication skills. Thank you for posting this. Keep it up.
What’s with all the negative comments? Get over yourselves people. I enjoyed this short into video to satisfy my mild curiosity about clawhammer. I play three-finger right now and some day might choose to learn this. So thank you.
this is one of the best frail instrution vids ive seen. turnin the picks around too makes sense. So simple but makes switching from 3 finger to frail in a song soooo easy ! thanks man
What part of ‘Complete Beginner’ don’t the nay sayers understand? Classic comments from the ‘I wanna play like Bela Fleck now crowd.’ You only have to practice on days that end in Y! 😉
@@rimrodi7 I was totally about to say that--if people are watching this then they need to say Steve Martin or Abigail Washburn, lol, they play clawhammer:-)
I had my first lesson in Pigeon Forge TN . I did claw but played 5,4and 3 with thumb then played 1 with middle finger and 2 with index finger.. my nails kept getting in the way . Do you think I should do a down strum Instead of an up strum ? I think it's more comfortable. Please let me know . I'm in love with the Banjo and waiting for new strings too come in mail . Should be Saturday. Then will put new ones on and tune so I can start my lessons again ! I'm want too be good 👍
I am taking banjo lessons and have taught myself the claw hammer “boom-chick-a” strum. My instructor recently told me I need to pluck the strings for other notes. In your opinion, is this correct? My concern is that I will learn a little bit of the claw hammer style and a little bit of the bluegrass style and not have a proper foundation of either. Thank you very much for the video.
Nah, that's the best way to do it. You've got to have a good understanding of each individual string and picking's the best way to learn. Then you can apply what you learn there to clawhammer and vice versa
I always find myself using my index fingers for the lower string and my middle finger for the higher strings....I come from a finger style guitar background
I don't understand why banjo players call it frailing or clawhammer. On guitar we call it strumming & crosspicking, but they seem like the same thing to me.
You are now going to hear from someone who started playing in the late 1970's. This is your foundation kids. Understand this, if you want to learnto play, you will bw practicing this for weeks. Suck it up or find a fucking clarinet.
I did both… And you know yeah… It takes a long time to learn claw hammer banjo but because of your advice I grabbed a clarinet and I could play like Artie Shaw in like the first five minutes. And just like all newborn babies I was born playing better than Benny Goodman.
I wasnt expecting such a nice video when you said that you would be talking in middlefinger terminology😂 I'm getting my banjo next week and doing some pre study. And thanks for the first usefull tip gonna get a fingerpick, because I do alot of work with my hands and growing longer fingernails might be a mission impossible for me

I love that mantra "let's make some noise" whether a beginner or not. New sub, all the best!

Bela fleck plays 3 finger style though?

This was fantastic, thank you! I appreciate you focusing on the correct technique early on so that we learned to play properly from the beginning.
Whoa you just commented!
It's a Brooks Banjo. Made by Brooks Masten in Portland, OR.
Very cool version and I dig the remote location. 👍🚀❤️

Thank you that really breaks down the “boom”

@@ClayDress thank you very much for the advice. I appreciate it 👍🏼
Frailing Banjo lesson one by Patrick Costello. If you want to learn clawhammer style banjo that's the place to start.

THANK YOU FOR THIS BASIC, BEGINNER'S LESSON!! I ASSUME THAT YOUR BANJO IS TUNED TO "STANDARD", "OPEN G"... "D, G, D, G, B, D " ?...
Thank you- love it
Playtime for Rammy Boy!
Good video.
I know nothing about playing instruments, but you seem like a good teacher.
Thanks.
Lol. I play fiddle, guitar and mandolin-I know nothing about banjo nor do I own one. I will learn someday. This is prep for me🤪
Naysayers. Bah. This was what I wanted to see.
ho hum. Thanks for showing me the first note! Good luck with selling the rest of the lesson on the DVD.
Go Ryan!
I hope I said that right in my comment question. I'm just starting . Correct me please I'm learning .
Great content !
Keep frailing fun!
Great lesson! Thank you
Holy Smokes!!! Hey Ryan!
good music real artist
What is the brand of that banjo
Perfect
can you do all the motions the same way for a regular banjo?
I always find myself using my index fingers for the lower string and my middle finger for the higher strings....I come from a finger style guitar background
THANK YOU FOR THIS! LOL JUST WORK ON THE ATTACK!! IM CRYIN, this video was gold

Because you shape your hand like a "claw" and use your thumb to "hammer" the strings. It's a bit like slap bass I think
@@benbedwell343 Okay, thanks.
It’s not crosspicking, though-crosspicking doesn’t use fingers to strum/pluck. Scruggs-style rolls are a lot more like crosspicking than trailing.
Thank you
1:21 me who cut my nails for fingerpicks
💀
If you click on the link you get exactly the same video but you have to pay for the next bit.
I bite my nails and have no nails whatsoever. Sounds just fine.
Hell, maybe even better
Where did you get the finger pick?
Jesus loves you all
That's gotta get your forearms huge
And make you go blind 😅
Proper anatomy of the hand, the middle finger is #3. Little finger is #1.
“Proper”? I just I’m surprise nobody mentioned the proper name of the fifth string on a tenor banjo until this guy did.
did you know that your '@' doesn't work?

@Duerksjv hey man dude just learn banjo its actually simpler than guitar, an learnin guitar firts might lock you into that mindset
you bite your fingernails?
Ean Walsh and the rest of this gang SHOULD USE A DIFFERENT VENUE FOR THEIR ADVERTISING. ............Later on in the advertisement........
Way to slow. What I'm sure we newbies need is... Just play the boom chicka over and over so we can play along. Stop with all the words.
*too. But, I'm sure you're a newbie to grammar.
ZZZZZZZZZ.
Can you please talk a bit slower? I was almost awake watching this.
DAMN THAT WAS A POOR EXCUSE FOR A LESSON !
Please! This guy just loves to hear himself talk. Anybody could have condensed this lesson to about 3 minutes!!!
Ok
two minutes in and still no playing... just talking about fingers...
PLAY SOMETHING ALREADY. 5minutes in AND NOTHING
Click bait!
The mansplaining..... I fell asleep
Get back to the kitchen
Did you learn to be so unpleasant or does it just come naturally?
Oh, look. Another woman overestimating her value.
It’s a banjo lesson… so he’s teaching.. how is this mansplaining lmao
Bro what 🤣 I'm tryna learn how to play the banjo idk about you
