Agree that taking a break from playing does help. One tip to further improve (aside from the obvious practice practice) is to learn basic theory. This will help with understanding how slash and kirk came up with their iconic lead lines, allowing one to apply them freely in all music.

yup, basic music theory is a great enabler

Except often these masters will deny knowing any music theory! They just found notes that sounded good.

I need to find my muse again . I feel old and bored . I’m old enough to know that if I wait for inspiration, I’ll be waiting forever . Inspiration will come after doing it without inspiration for what may seem like forever . Think I just answered my own question. I really like your guitar channel . Most guitar channels are merely infomercials to sell you something. Not yours . Very interesting what you do . And don’t be reluctant to keep talking about PRS 😂. I love PRS too. Thanks , bro !

Hey Juan, I checked out a few of your videos…awesome playing! And I hear ya’ about inspiration. I think as we get older, we sometimes can become bored. I started learning guitar late in life. Still pretty lousy. LOL. But have found putting emotions (sad or happy) through the guitar is a wonderful thing. Even got a song copyrighted at the suggestion of some friends who are musicians. Maybe consider mixing it up a bit ? Write some lyrics, and sing? Just for kicks. My neighbor is in her 60’s and just started learning keyboard. We were laughing, I said ‘maybe try writing a song’. She laughed and said she was going to call it ‘Blah’. LOL. Anyhoo, I’ve enjoyed adding video effects for fun. And if you have family / kids around, maybe get them involved with the creativity. Have fun!

i lost everything i owned back in 2018, and it was a few years before i was able to get another guitar, that was longer than i had ever gone in 30 years of playing, and when i got another one i practiced every day until i got my strength and dexterity back and before i knew it i was better than i was before, learning and mastering new techniques from YT videos, theres still alot to learn, but i play every single day and its helped my playing more than ever before

The break lets you refill that inspiration I think.
You come back with a fresh perspective or outlook.
Often a new peice of gear can do the same, but this is an infinitely cheaper way of achieving it! 😆

I fully agree. When I have struggled on something specific, sometimes I step away from the task at hand. Frustration gets me nowhere. Sometimes that means playing something else, other times I just stop and give it time.
Before my accident 21 years ago, I used to be an athlete. I played basketball mostly. Visualization techniques off the court were extremely useful to my overall practice and game performance. The pros all do it. This also works for guitar and anything else in life.
Our bodies need to rest and visualize - that’s a crucial part of how we internalize and recall muscle memory.

i'm not a beginner and i am fairly diligent about playing daily. some songs that i've been learning for a long time because they're really difficult and i find taking a break from practicing those is helpful. i'll come back to the song or lick after a month and find that i'm more capable.

Another use of zero is while soloing, pause and let the rythm section breathe out the goodness for a more vivid return.

The first i learned in the studio, was take a deep breathe while playing, not onley you but also your playing! Rest in music is so musical! 🤔

I believe it has something to do with sleeping well. Often when I tackle something difficult and frustrating to play it becomes quite easy when I try again the next morning. Almost as if I my brain has received a software update during the night.

As ever, the ancient mystics had reverse engineered how the brain works. There's something about the machine learning works that needs some baking/sedimentation/refactoring time before new training data is fully usable.

I give my brain a break by switching between electric and acoustic. Sometimes will grab an acoustic to play "electric" lead lines over a blues or whatever. My mentor always taught me to play a little bit, at least 15 minutes every day if at all possible.
I do really like the concept of ZERO as you apply it here. Tim Pierce and others have always advised leaving that space for the voice and other instruments, and his advice to play in 5 or 6 note groups with pauses is really outstanding. Like the 'call and response' in gospel music, it allows a 'conversation' between the instruments and voices.
BB King was the master of that, playing one note for many seconds. Simple, but he REALLY, REALLY meant that note.

Switching between instruments is a great idea as well. Fully agree on BB King

Downtime also gives us time to reflect. Review some of our past work. Good, as well as ‘needs improvement’. Listen to music for inspiration. Consider new ideas, riffs, lyrics, etc.
