      @@i12bretro I couldn't wait. I tossed it on a VM on my pre-lab test server (to get to know Proxmox) and worked great. I'm wondering, though, if I should put it on a Pi Zero W, though, due to having a low power redundand solution. I've got my network and internet access gear on a UPS setup for a pretty long keep-alive. But the Servers get shut down the second i'm convinced the power isn't going to come RIGHT back on. so if I shut down the VM host then i'd have no DNS. Unless your average desktop OS will automatically switch to secondary DNS which I could set as normal. (assuming that it wouldn't use that DNS if something didn't resolve on the pi-hole because it was being blocked. Because that would be counter productive, lol.

      Sounds like an awesome setup! You'd have to do some testing with the Pi Zero W to see how responsive it is as your primary DNS server. I do like the idea of it all being low power but the W is wireless only. Im very interested in ProxMox, though I used XenServer for a few years and eventually found my way back to virtualbox with PHPVirtualBox to manage VMs from a browser. Good luck with your setup!

When i turn off the virtual linux and then start it again from the virtual box, it starts the boot procedure, but when its about to finish booting a black screen appears and then nothing happens (The terminal reboot command works perfectly, but when I turn off the os from the power menu I can not turn it on anymore. However, it responds to the main os's ping command when I see the black screen.). I tried to reboot countless times but it didn't fixed the problem. In every startup just a black screen. I've even fully reinstalled the virtual linux from the first to last step as it is shown in the tutorial, but it didn't work either. So, if someone could help me I would be very grateful. ;)

      It can work for all devices on your network if setup properly. The way I have mine setup is my router DHCP is setting the client DNS to my PiHole VM IP address. This way any device that connects to the network and gets an address from DHCP goes through PiHole and benefits from the ad blocking.

      Glad to hear at least it's partially working. I think some devices, like TVs, use hard coded DNS and ignore the DNS servers the router is sending. You can at least test the router is setting the DNS server by removing the hard coded DNS on Windows and running:
      Ipconfig /release
      Ipconfig /renew
      Ipconfig /all

      Make sure the VirtualBox network adapter is in Bridged mode. If its not you won't be able to reach the guest from outside host. It could also be firewall on the host OS, although I've never run into that problem before.

    • @i12bretro

      I believe under Settings > DNS you can enable the conditional forwarder option and set the IP range and router IP for PiHole to forward local DNS requests to your router. I haven't tested this, but came across it in their forums

      Ang also my operating system supports 64 bit, but when you configure the setting you choose 32 bit in which I followed. Does that cause problems?

    • @i12bretro
      @i12bretro  3 года назад

      As far as I know, Raspberry Pi OS is only released in a 32 bit version to keep backwards compatibility with older Raspberry Pi boards, so regardless if the host is 64 bit, the Raspberry Pi OS is only 32 bit, so you should pick 32 bit for the VM settings. No space left of device seems like your virtual disk is full

      Unfortunately not. I see the biggest impact browsing web pages. I also was looking in the logs one day and kept seeing a URL it was blocking thousands of times. After some research I found it was a tracking cookie that pihole was blocking.

    • @Shane-Singleton
      @Shane-Singleton 4 года назад

      @@i12bretro That makes this a pretty good usage case for me then. I generally don't mind the RUclips Ads because I know if they are blocked via Ad-Blocker or something then RUclips knows it and the channel doesn't get monotized for that single ad that was blocked. That and RUclips Ads are less likely to contain malware and other BS than their webpage counterparts.

    i12bretro.github.io/tutorials/0107.html makes it easy! Well done.
    Pi-hole runs nicely in virtual machines and containers so you can have it anywhere. It works with Docker containers etc too. (I just installed in a VM since that's so easy and I can do other things with that Debian install while Docker is giving me problems at the moment, but since you can install PiHole in both on the same PC without conflict while learning that's not a problem.) When my cheap SSD arrives I'll install it on an old Thinkpad so it like the rest of what matters on my LAN has built-in battery backup, but individual "PiHoles everywhere" are easy to manage and permit me to (for example) USB tether my phone during power outages without losing protection I otherwise would by bypassing my LAN.
