China's Approach to the Middle East

  • On the back of Beijing’s role in the Saudi Arabia-Iran rapprochement last year, accession of several Middle East countries to BRICS, and growing attention to the Global South in both Beijing and Washington, China’s engagement with the Middle East is worth greater attention. How are Chinese policymakers and scholars assessing their country’s goals in the region? What challenges do they envision to greater economic and security cooperation in the years ahead?
Please join the Interpret: China project for a panel discussion unpacking these important questions, drawing on recently translated primary source materials. The panel will feature Jon Alterman, Senior Vice President, Zbigniew Brzezinski Chair in Global Security and Geostrategy, and director of the Middle East Program at CSIS, Gedaliah Afterman, Head of the Asia Policy Program at The Abba Eban Institute for Diplomacy and Foreign Relations at Reichman University, and Yun Sun, Senior Fellow and Co-Director of the East Asia Program, and Director of the China Program at the Stimson Center. The panel discussion will be moderated by Lily McElwee, Deputy Director and Fellow, Freeman Chair in China Studies.
This event is made possible by support from the Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

If you want a good debate with high quality you have to invite the opposition side for a true discussion. What I heard is the parroting one from another.
I also am very disappointed with the Chinese lady who should know better about China. They are all very disappointing without really knowing the Chinese strategy just like most of the western media😢
Not a good one I have to say.

China’s genocide of Uyghur is ignored. Its appalling human rights record is well known yet it feels it has a right to call out Israeli action in Gaza; yet supports Putin’s war crimes in Eastern Ukraine and its attack on a sovereign nation.

We shouldn’t really talk about which western country has attacked more sovereign nations without the approval of the UN Security Council. China sees the hypocrisy loud and clear and that’s why it’s being silent on the Russia/Ukraine issue; just as quiet as it was when US invaded Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yugoslavia, Syria. UN Chatter can not apply to everyone else but trampled by Western Nations.

Some people are used to coalitions of the willing , invading countries under command. China is not interested in spearheading coalitions and impose its will. As for Israel, China could not abandon the historic ties with the Palestinian people just to maintain good relations with her. After all, Israel already has a permanent protector, come rain, come sunshine.

Proffesor Alteman gave a vivd picture of the rigidity of China policy with the anecdote of the well used notes for the speech given by China's special envoy to the Middle East at a conference in the region. I'm sure that will remain with me for a very long time. The second takeaway from Professor Alteman is somewhat ironic, given the first as it is how anchored throughout the discussion to a position, and rather like "the speech" that had been given before and would be given again m the Professor's contributions were essentially a single talking point 'adaptively reimagined' and restated in the context of points made by other panelist. Not verbatim regurgitation like "the speech", but no more less saying exactly the same thing, namely,
    1. Actions by China are part of its US policy not a Middle East Policy.
    2. China talks a lot but does nothing serious even to protect its self interest in the area .(Implied circular argument that (1) evidenced by (2)
    3. Great shock and surprise China does not do more. (An incompatible response if indeed (1) is a genuinely held belief).
It’s just “China Bad” messaging and it is sad to see that coming from someone holding such esteemed positions. Sad but not surprising, and explains why the policy and political elites in the US hold the views they do (dogma aside) when the institutions that provide the analysis are blighted with hard wired ‘bias’. The lens you view China through is irrelevant when you’re wearing blinkers.
I had absolutely no problem differentiating between Professor Alterman and Professor Afterman - night and day Professor Sun’s insights were at times mesmerising,

The oil exporters and their customers depend on cheaper use of the Red Sea. America substantially does not any more. One wonders whether the Americans could
for say 60 days declare the route unsafe and "protect" potential users from going through the Red Sea by blockading its entrance and by doing so wake the world up.
The time could be extended if necessary.
This is a real question because drones are now very cheap but expensive to protect against.
It has always seemed to me that American ingenuity and finance have
made possible the very lives of most people who live in the Middle East but America gets no respect.
I have even, in despair, thought that with Middle East people and the Peoples Republic of China no good deed goes unpunished.

This old Jon Alterman sounds like a bitter China-hater with little insights on the subject matter. Of course China looks at this its middle east policy with the lens of Sino-US relations, which is the top-1 geopolitical issue for China; but China also has a large share of its oil supply from the region and of its intl trade, so it is just silly to say that is not a primary concern.

Anyway, both the Chineseand the US are in the middle east for petrol and natural gas, not because of their love for Arabs. And probably China will have to turn towards Central Asia for that once the Americans take away their protection umbrella from the Chinese ships or ships carrying Chinese goods.

Pi 3.14 π was first recorded by Moses in the Exodus Tabernacle blueprints near 1400 BC not 250 BC by Archimedes. 330-15-1=314
Calculation based on the description of the Tabernacle's curtains in Exodus 26:8-9, 12-13 with vs13 being the lynchpin. Here's a breakdown:
Total Length of the Curtains: The Tabernacle had 11 curtains, each 30 cubits long. So, all the curtains together were 11 x 30 = 330 cubits long.
Folding One Curtain: One of these 11 curtains was to be folded in half. When you fold a curtain that is 30 cubits long in half, it becomes 15 cubits long.
Adjusting the Total Length: After folding one curtain in half, the total length of all curtains would be 330 cubits (from all 11 curtains) minus 15 cubits (from the folded curtain). So, the adjusted length is 330 - 15 = 315 cubits.
Extra Length at Both Ends: The same folded curtain is supposed to have half a cubit of material hanging off at both ends of the Tabernacle. Since there are two ends, that adds up to 2 x 0.5 = 1 cubit.
Final Calculation: To find the final length, subtract this extra 1 cubit from the adjusted length of 315 cubits. This gives 315 - 1 = 314 cubits.
This was discovered by a Christian engineer from Wisconsin in 2015. Geometry π people will see this as dome shaped. However Josephus the Historian describes the traditional rectangle shaped Tabernacle. 2 different shapes.
      or
      (C-curtain L-length) 11Cx30L= 330CL, 1Cx30L= 30CL÷2= 15CL-330CL= 315CL, 315CL-.5CL-.5CL= 314CL Exodus 26:8-9, 12-13
      or
      330-15-1=314
      Exodus 26:13 is Pi 3.14
