  • Hwange National Park (formerly Wankie Game Reserve) is the largest natural reserve in Zimbabwe. The park lies in the west, on the main road between Bulawayo and the Victoria Falls and near to Dete.
Staying at Main Camp Lodges, Hwange National Park
Main Camp is situated at the main entrance to the Park. There are numerous pans and pumped waterholes around Main Camp and the area is rich in game. Lodges in Hwange National Park are units with one or two bedrooms, bathroom, fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator and stove, lounge and verandah. Cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery are provided. In addition, you will also find the following facilities: restaurant and bar, basic grocery store and curio shop. Note that there is no fuel available at Main Camp but a fuel station located nearby on the main highway.
Taking a game drive around Main Camp Hwange
On our game drive we saw the following places of interest:
Dopi vlei, a fossil river containing Dopi Pan
Kennedy vlei, a fossil river also known as Massumamalisa, containing the Kennedy 1, Kennedy 2 (named after Sir John Noble Kennedy, Governor of Southern Rhodesia) and Massumamalisa (Somalisa) Pans (some great and very intimate sightings here as it is super far from Main Camp and many visitors do not make the trip)
Nyamandhlovu Pan (the name refers to elephant meat) and game-viewing platform, one of the most popular game-viewing sites and where we spotted a big pride of lion
    Guvalala Pan and game-viewing platform
Ngweshla Pan, a waterhole heavily frequented by game since before the park's proclamation
    Zebra Dazzle Camouflage
Unlike other forms of camouflage, that aim to conceal a subject, the camouflage employed by zebras - known as dazzle camouflage - aims to make it difficult to estimate a target's range, speed, and heading. It was even used extensively during World War I by the military for ship camouflage.
    Trip Information:
Days on the trip: 43 out of 90
    Current Country: Zimbabwe

I visited Hwange in September just before meeting you in Cape Town. The elephant population is amazing at Hwange but I was concerned at the time about the amount of water and vegetation available. I'm glad to see from your video that it was much greener there in December than when I visited. In the meantime, spring has finally arrived here in Ottawa where the urban wildlife is less exotic consisting for the most part of squirrels, rabbits and chipmunks, although watching a red squirrel chase very much larger black squirrels away is a bit entertaining.

You're making me long for nature. We try to have a break in the Kruger Park this time every year, but alas, Covid-19 has scuppered this year's plans. It helps to be able to experience a bit of your nature adventure with you.

We are so relieved that the lockdown is being eased. Hoping to head up to Kruger pretty soon ourselves for our latest project. Do you have any Kruger tips?

My family and I met you on a market in Cape Town this summer, and were really impressed by your beautiful photography! My mom contemplated buying a huge picture of a giraffe for about an hour and wanted to ship it back to the Netherlands, but ended up not to unfortunately.. at least we can follow your instagram channel to see more pictures, and also some awesome cinematogrophy of Africa to reminisce about the incredible nature (especially during these homebound times..)
    Greetings from Amsterdam :)

Hey Suzie. Great to hear from you. The lockdown has been pretty tough here but at least it has given us the time to work on these videos and the online store (which we have been meaning to do for ages). We can definitely ship the giraffe in a tube to Amsterdam (maybe a cool present for you mom). Hope you can join us for the livestream tonight?

Love seeing the 'behind-the-scenes' of how you capture your amazing photos! We came across your work at the Watershed last year and keep thinking of where we could hang one of your prints in our London home (especially my Saffa husband, who misses SA desperately!). Thanks!

Hi Jenny :) I am so glad you enjoyed the videos. The only problem I am having is that I get a photo that I feel is worth printing once in 10 000. So a lot of the video is waiting for that magic to happen

Wanted to buy a print when we were at The Watershed but decided to wait to see what our pictures from Kruger turned out like - have misplaced the camera on our return! So may well be shopping very soon!

Beautiful! I’ve always wanted to go to Hwange. Elephants will forever my favourite, and that photo of the ellie at the Shumba Pan hide with the clouds in the background is stunning 😍

Top work Adam. Sadly CV19 has meant we haven't been able to get your amazing pictures framed yet. Excited to get them up on the wall when this is all over and bring a little bit of Africa to Hampshire, UK. Look forward to sharing more adventures.

Thank you so much Robin. Yeah, it was so much fun. The adventure for this year was to raise money for the last population of desert lions, but that has been put on hold for the moment.
