    Heard rumors that one of the major companies is working on a small GPS position transmitter that fits onto the top of existing flagsticks. They also work on a universal software interface so that the position signal can be picked up by GPS watches, smartphone golf apps and GPS screens on electric trolleys to show the exact pin position on the green. That would be a fantastic feature!

      That makes an incredible amount of sense - I guess that would be in violation of R&A rules, but I suppose it wouldn't be any different than not using slope mode on a rangefinder, you'd just have to be able to easily turn the feature on and off. Would be a great innovation though, and one I'd like to see!

    You hit the nail on the head . Knowing the back yardage is a must as you can stand up and hit a club with full confidence that it won't make the back yardage even if perfect confidence is key to play well.

      Cheers Dave. I actually did a course vlog where I tested that out on a cold wet day, I only aimed for the back of the green, regardless of the pin position - it actually went pretty well given the difficult conditions - ruclips.net/video/GIiHGLB5gYQ/видео.html

    Great explanation of why you prefer the GPS way more advantage to know the yardage of front, middle & back

    great video mate! I use GPS only because I had a smart watch and an android before I got into golf - didn't actually have to get anything. I use GolfPad pro, I paid something like 3$ a month for it and it communicates with my watch to tell me distances and track club strokes as well - the app then compiles all of the shots I've saved with each club, then it averages out your distance, and recommends a club for you based on how far away from the green you are, and what YOUR normal distance is with a club. Pretty cool.
    As you say, if you're very good - expert level - and you've got your distances dialed in to within 2-3m with every shot.....you know exactly how far you will hit it with the club and therefore need a precise "to the pin" distance rather than the distance to front middle and back of green.....then you'll need the laser range finder. Pin locations change every week at the course I play on. But for me, and for 99% of the golfing population, I am nowhere near accurate enough with my distances and just getting it on the green is an achievement for me!! lol

      Thanks Canauzie! Recently I’ve actually started to always play the yardage to the back of the green, especially now it’s winter here, I don’t even look where the pin is. Seems to be working well so far (new video on it coming tomorrow 👍)

      So you have a Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch and you use the Golfpad pro app and only pay like $4 a month for the app and it comes with all those features?

    • @thecanauzie2660
      @thecanauzie2660 3 года назад

      @@golfblood22 yes that's exactly correct. I already had the smart watch tho I didn't buy it just for this. If u don't have the watch tho the app still does the same thing but I found it annoying to pull my phone out for every shot....if I'm honest I don't do it to every putt either just cuz of the logistics of stopping to input another shot....
      If u don't want to buy the watch they make a product called tags, for about 50$. They're little buttons u put on the end of ur clubs, and before every shot u just tap the club to ur phone. Can leave ur phone in ur pocket. Works super well I play with a mate who has them.
      Highly recommend if ur into combining tech with sport....

    I purchased a Mileseey rangefinder for £65 and use it alongside my garmin x40, reason being it has the Slope feature which is hugely important for a golfer of any level also its good to know the exact distance the bend of a dogleg which you can’t get on many gps devices.

      Joe MFC I am enjoying using a rangefinder for the precision, but I still think a beginner will be better off with a GPS 👍

    I do agree that people can fall into the trap of hitting to the # on a laser range finder rather than thinking about the shot. Course management is huge. If flag is front with trouble, unless you are very consistent, don't pick the club that you have to hit the perfect shot, but with any poor strike will end up in the trouble. Pick the club if you hit it perfect will land center of the green and a miss hit might end up better.

    Thank you for this. Was debating whether to get a range finder or get a GPS watch. I wasn't sure that I'd pick up a range finder and consistently use it. I think GPS is the way to go and always gor for the furthest distance.

    • @GolfGuyReviews
      @GolfGuyReviews  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching. I played today and can safely say I used my gps watch on every hole at least twice….I used my rangefinder about 5 times the whole round. Both have their advantages, but personally I get more benefit from the GPS 👍

  • @onsenguy
    @onsenguy 2 года назад

    I've used both devices extensively, and you're right that most golfers are just not good enough to need the precision of a laser rangefinder. The GPS also is much quicker to use and gives a very good yardage approximation.

    Other thing to consider is that as a high handicapper, you can't zap a flag from behind trees esp on the wrong fairway. GPS gives you some confidence of what you need to do to get back in play

    Great review again. How useful is the G range from Garmin off the course? I like that the S40 etc have the HR monitor built in for the gym. Are they versatile or just a watch with GPS?

    • @GolfGuyReviews
      @GolfGuyReviews  4 года назад

      Thanks Chris, I've got a full review of the Golfbuddy GPS, watch and rangefinder coming soon once I've used them enough out on the course.
      The ability to virtually play any of the courses in the new Garmin G80 is really clever, but for over £400, is it really worth it? Not sure, I've not had a chance to use it.
      Not got a Garmin watch, but I do use Golfshot GPS on my iWatch, which is really good - I hardly ever use the heart monitor. Feel free to let Garmin know I should be reviewing more of their stuff! :)

    Great video Kevin and like the approach you have. Interesting thoughts on the Laser v GPS. I have been looking to get one (I have a current Bushnell Ghost GPS at the moment) but I am thinking of upgrading. What are your views on the Garmin S60 v S42?

    • @GolfGuyReviews
      @GolfGuyReviews  2 года назад

      Thanks James 🙏 I have a full review of the S42 here - ruclips.net/video/Y2-HJmcosKk/видео.html as well as a comparison of the S42 vs the Shotscope v3
      I haven’t tried the s60(or newer s62) for myself yet, but a friend has one. Knowing the features, personally I couldn’t justify the extra cost, plus I think it would look too big on my small wrists. However, it doesn’t mean it’s not worth it, it just comes down to personal affordability really.
      I am currently testing the entry level S12, and while I wouldn’t use it off the course, it does the same core job, and the battery life is ridiculously good (I’m almost up to a month of use in one charge based on 2 full rounds and just on standby for the rest of the time)
      I hope that helps 👍 and don’t forget to subscribe 😃
