The guy I get my microgreens from at our farmers market, never heard of dehydrating them. I told hiim that I dehydrate them and use them in my ferments. He asked to let him know how they work out. Thank you for what you share.❤❤
I’m interested in seeing more videos like this, I want to see more ideas on dehydrated or freeze drying microgreens
Great video as always. I’ve been dehydrating my micro greens for awhile now and it is another great way to eat your greens. I dehydrate mine at no higher than 105 degrees to maintain maximum nutrients.
Thank you so much for the Feedback Carrie Thompson! We appreciate your support! Carrie Thompson 😉Hello again from "On The Grow"...We apologize for not being timely on your last request or comment!!! I just made some zucchini jerky. It has the stamp of approval from my husband, kids snd grandkids. I am going to tweak the recipe and use it with micro greens powder.
Nice video. Love me some jerky! I never thought of powdering Microgreens as they compact so well after Freeze Drying. I freeze dry the micro greens I don't have plans for. Freeze dried food and then powdered in a blender condenses it down SO MUCH. I can't imagine the amount nutrients contained in - powdered and Freeze Dried Microgreens - in a one quart jar!
Congrats on selecting a good dehydrator, because there's a lot of junk out there. Rear to front airflow across (not up thru) multiple racks is a must, as are digital controls. I also use mine for fermenting/autolysing sourdough, yogurt and dosa/dhokla batter because it has low settings like 104 and 95F available. I actually use it more often for bread than for drying herbs.
COMMENTS: 158F for 4hrs is hotter than optimal for drying greens ... you're denaturing vitamin and enzyme content. I recommend using more shelves loaded more thinly, a lower temp (no higher than 132F ish, or better still 122F), and letting it run overnight for 8-12 hours ... even 24 hrs, if it needs it, to reach brittle stage. It takes longer yes, but the results are better.
TECHNICAL TRIVIA: 158F is optimal temp for amalyse conversion in all grain brewing for soaked barley and wheat. I've actually malted, redried and milled my own wheat on occasion.

blessings. \
its very suggestable to blend your food under vacuum, the oxygen that is being sucked into the blend will oxidize alot of the vitamins otherwise.
quick example, my banana smoothies oxidize to a grayish color after blending but stay vibrant yellow when I blend them under vacuum.
How do you do that? Wouldn't it require extra equipment?
Recep - Can you tell us more about how to do the blending under vacuum please?

I have been thinking about investing in a dehydrator. This just confirmed that I must have!! What other microgreens do you dehydrate?
Basically all of them! I think we have about 20 varieties that we've dehydrated and blended... Basils are great for seasoning... The Radish and Mustards are great for spices... Broccoli are great for adding to smoothies and if they have stronger flavor, pastas and stuff. We have some Amaranth that has beautiful red flakes to it and a great earthy flavor. The sky is the limit :)

@@OnTheGrow Yooo beautiful people!
I really love your videos and you make an amazing job on providing us with valuable information to grow our microgreens with success. However, as a vegan I can't give this one a thumbs up. Of course, I will have never given a thumbs down to this or any other of your videos. Keep up your great and inspiring job. I send you my love from Greece. Thank you
🙂Thank you so much for the Feedback Dimitrios Vasilakis! We appreciate your support!
Hope Greece is feeling wonderful!!!🙂
Fabulous! So much info in one video. Is there a reason you chose the brand of dehydrator you have over other brands?
Thank you so much!! We love this one because it gets solid reviews and looks really great for the pricepoint. We wanted something that would last us years (hopefully) and blend in with the stainless steel appliances we have... Lastly, we wanted to avoid ones with plastic because we've seen a ton of pictures where the plastic binds with the food and flakes off little thin layers... grossed us out, so we wanted to stick to stainless steel frame and trays.
Here's a link to the one we use: www.amazon.com/shop/onthegrowfarms?listId=3QD2VMEFZ58UJ

I’m investing on a freeze dryer to do the same.
Wondering what dehydrator you are using. Looking for a good one for my microgreens.
We put it on this list here: www.amazon.com/shop/onthegrowfarms?listId=3QD2VMEFZ58UJ
We really love the Magic Mill that we used in the video. Works really, really well and looks nice in our kitchen with the other stainless appliances. It's a little noiser than our other dehydrator, but it works like 10 times as fast so we don't mind it.
Love your videos!! I am gonna try 105 degrees, but unsure for how long should I try running it. Maybe 6h?
your Creativity is 👍
Very good idea ! When i discovered microgreens i thought about turning them into spices but wasn't sure it was possible. By the way you can dehydrate with a simple convection oven as long as the minimum temperature doesn't exceed 114,8 f (46 degrees Celsius) which i read was the temperature when the amount of nutrients starts degrading. But i'd suggest reading about it on internet.
I was wondering, was the mustard still spicy when you taste it in powder ?
Thanks for the video

www.onthegrow.net ...we are so proud of the help it provides!!! And thankyou for the feedback1 Yes, the mustard is still spicy!
great video, tks a lot,i was wondering if at this degree u dehydrate doesnt it kill the vitamins of the green please
Thank you so much for the support!! We like to dehydrate at around 108F if we want to keep most of the vitamin content in the plants!
Anytime you dehydrate you need to do so under 115 degrees if you are really trying to maintain nutritional integrity. I wrote an entire PDF on the subject you need to go for raw status!!
Do you have a link? We would love to check it out, as we do dehydrate a lot of things! great idea!!!!
Great video, confirms what I have been thinking of doing with any excess. Tell me, do you sometimes create dehydrated products when you do farmers markets ?
If we still did Farmers Markets, we probably would! Though, it does become a value-added product and it is something that has been processed. Technically to do it and sell at a farmers market in our local area, I think we would have to dehydrate and pack it in a "food-safe kitchen" or something like that... so we would have to find a commercial kitchen to rent for a few hours to handle it there.
We have not, as yet. We sometimes prefer to cook with the dried varieties because their color is so stunning!
Hoo I'm going to do kale this way thank you

What a cool looking blender. Can you tell me the brand and where you got it? Thanks!
Great mam 👍
Great video. As always very informative. What make is your dehydrator?
Thank you so much Thierry! We use the Magic Mill, it works really great, but we've only had it a few weeks, so we can't speak to its longevity. I love to try this jerky. ( I have to buy a dehydrator First!)
How long is this shelf life? Can I freeze?
Thank you
158 degrees seems pretty high, (idk what i'm talking about keep in mind :) but most fokes say between 105-120 degrees is good because if the temp is too high it can hurt the vitamins/mineral profile of the plant. is this true with microgreens?
Yes, it's a bit too high. If you have the time- 105 deg for more hours (over night) is better.
Thanks for the great vdo. :D Do I have to wash microgreens before dehydrating them?
What would be the cost of one container of dehydrated microgreens ? that was almost 4 full trays, correct ?
What kind of dehydrator are you using?
If you want to save the vitamin C in the microgreens I believe you have to stay below 103°.
I think you are correct! For most nutrients I think 103F is the limit... Thank you for the support!
How do you use the dehydrated microgreens that you do not powder? The ones you just put into the Mason jar?
Great video! Have you guys used the green grow trays since the beginning of your channel? Do they last a while, are they worth investing in?
Yes, we have been using these as long as the others! We do like them, and they seem to be doing fine for the use we put them through! 😀 Eva Chandler Again...we really benefit from your support and nice compliments!!! Have you visited our newest website...

@@OnTheGrow Cool, I will check it out!
Looks delicious, but jerky with no salt?
Do you rinse the greens before you dehydrate them, to ensure all the grow medium is off of it?
Yes, we do. Then pat dry with a clean cloth or paper towel before putting in the dehydrator..😊 We have a playlist here on RUclips that has a few recipes on how to use Microgreens! You should check it out for inspiration → ruclips.net/p/PLkEXI0BumyG6IEk3hM4WyIuKa4RfMeUe2
Using a freeze drier to dehydrate would preserve more fresh qualities of your product.
Have you tried freeze drying them?
No we have not!! We've been curious about it though.

So I bought a microgreen kit with some trays etc. My first attempt was nothing like what I see in your videos but I know, only Practive makes perfect. Is there a test to know when the microgreans are dry enough?
Yes! It's called "conditioning". Put your dried goods in a airtight jar, set it aside for about 10 days and check it daily for any signs of moisture in the jar. If you see any and catch it quick enough, you can just dry it some more. But if it goes too far, mold will start and you loose it all. Just check it at least once a day. After you reach 10 days with no signs of moisture, pop a dessicant in there to keep it from getting moisture when you open and close the jar a lot.
[16123] great video, Th·x for shar·ng; FYI: U may or may not know, but - freezeDry·ng iz a much better (albeit much more expensive) method of preserving 'ALL' the original vitamins & minerals from degradation
Yes, we have heard that ,but, yes it is more expensive
Where are these trays from?
The trays we use either come from Bootstrap Farmer or from our storefront www.onthegrow.net where we sell the sprouting trays and lots of other great products!
On the Grow- near the beginning, you give the criteria for the siding that the sprouts are ready to harvest. You said you could see something coming through that sounded like you were saying “STRULIES”. I did study botany, and I don’t recall that term at all. So I’m hoping this is a case of really truly unclear audio at that point.
Would you mind terribly getting back to me and telling me what the term is. I’m certainly not afraid of doing the work, but I really do need to hear that term properly to know exactly what you’re saying.
I’m new with micro greens and sprouts, and also New is freeze-drying. So I’m gonna quick look around online brought me to your video. I appreciate you sharing the information that you have, but I need a little extra help here.
Thank you very much.
"True Leaves" is what I'm guessing the word was. Our book covers everything in exceptional detail! Www.onthegrow.net
@@OnTheGrow : Ah, yes that makes so much more sense! Tyvk!
I read somewhere that when you do this not to go over 110 degrees. Is that true?
Yeah I think 104F is supposedly the max that some people say you should take it too before you lose nutrients. There are so many here and packed with so much nutrients, I don’t mind losing a tiny bit!
Sorry I am a fond follower from new Zealand ... CJs seal of approval was not convincing ...Im going to have to try this recipe myself
My dehydrator does not plug in because it is my solar oven. Free energy if the sun is out there. It's all good.
Why do you remove the marinade from the meat?
Mainly because it can get a little thick and sticky with all the marinade. It can also drip into the dehydrator, which isn't bad, but an extra work to cleanup. You can leave it on too if you prefer more flavor and don't mind the mess.
Also it will not dehydrate fast enough to be food safe if it is too wet.

@@OnTheGrow Have you ever considered it? If you are against animal cruelty and exploitation you may find is a pretty consistent position! Damn... I was really convinced you were already...
@ They said they arent. And sadly the meats that th GOVERNMENT Allows are their Own. Until we farm and have ETHICAL practices You do You Best. Yet to Be sad someone isn’t VEGAN for what the Government does and allows. Is SELF-ish, Kinda.
Be Happy You learn something. Folks dont have to be what your or my catered idea of them is.
@@iriefarms1212 it's nice of you to try to defend them, although unnecessary, as I was having a perfectly nice conversation with them. Regardless I bet the government doesn't mandate anyone to eat animals at all. I'm not sad for what the government allows or not. I'm sad because they seem to be very nice people and yet, probably without even really thinking about it, contribute to an immense amount of unnecessary cruelty and suffering when they consume animal products. If you are aware of this issue then I would say you are the one who selfishly puts the taste pleasure, tradition or convenience above the life of another sentient and conscious being who didn't want to die.
Also I am happy I learned something but probably isn't what you think. I learned that no matter how friendly you approach someone on the topic of ending animal abuse, as I did, people always get offended for being shown they are unknowingly contributing to perhaps the most pressing moral issue in the present day. So I thank you for showing me that the way I present this topic has nothing to do with how people receive it. Do you know why vegans are known to be agressive in their expositions? It's because they got tired of starting in a friendly manner and then encountered someone like you who insulted them.
And sure, no one has to be like me. I'm also against racism, homophobia, domestic violence, anti semitism and pedophilia. But I guess you only have a problem with my views when the victim I'm defending isn't human, right?
