I agree. It was them stating what the Watch was for. Not your life, but the lives of everyone...and they held enough to keep them from swarming through the most vulnerable point.
On an audience investment level using Gren for this worked better than the books. In the story it is another Night's Watch member, Donal Noye, who is the well respected member of the Watch and the person who kept the Watch from executing Jon when he returned from Wildlings. This is significant because with Noye dying Jon is losing more and more trustworthy people in the watch. Bonus: Ollie is also a show only character. He is replacing Satin somewhat who was likely written out for content censoring. Satin was a boy who worked in the brothel at Olds Town and claimed to be 18 but very obviously wasn't. (Probably closer to 16) Had similar archery abilities and played similar role as Ollie. Jon doesn't actually see Ygritte killed in the book he finds her after the first night. Only confirmation he has is that the arrow had different feathers than his so he was not the one that killed her. He does see her in the courtyard from up high and hesitates to fire shots at her but book Jon is a bit more cold than show Jon so he does fire at her though from a good distance away.
little foreshadowing back in s4ep4, shortly after arriving at castle black Olly was watching as jon taught recruits how to spar. he steps foward to spar with the others but jon says he's only to watch for now. he asks if Olly has ever even held a sword and Olly says "I was the best archer in our hamlet" and everyone laughs at him. LilOllyNotgoneMiss wasn't cappin 😂😂😂
For me, the scene with the brothers holding the gate against the giant was a deeply sad one that stands out. It's actually one of my favorite scenes from the entire show. Maybe you consider rewatching it, not coming from a battle analytical perspective but from the perspective of a group of boys, scared to death, clearly overpowered and underprepared - and they know it. They know they're gonna die. The only reason they're here is their vow. That is their only motivation to keep going in a situation like that. And they died fighting. And they held the gate. I'm not gonna lie, I felt a bit hurt when you were yelling at them in that moment :D because I think it was a powerful and beautifully sad scene.
Yeah a lot of their yelling in this episode got to me. Like Ser Allister giving a speech, which was needed to motivate the brothers as they were severely outnumbered and scared. Or taking so long with dropping barrels on the giants, there was a TON of things happening at once so that's why it took a minute, and mistakes and death are going to happen in war especially since everyone is moving so fast. And yeah especially with the giant in the tunnel, like there was literally nothing else they could do but hype themselves up for the fight that was coming that they knew they would probably die but holding the gate and keeping the giant out was more important than their individual selves
Funny that Oberyn had actually won the fight the moment he was able to cut The Mountain because of the poison. All he had to do was stay out of reach until Ser Gregor collapsed, smh
oberyns death is one part of this show that gets me the angriest, he couldve done soooo many cool things had so much potential and got crushed instead (literally)

27:13 "Get back must be had." Indeed. Olly is one of my favorite characters. People forget that the Wildlings raided Olly's village, killed everyone he had ever known, and they even told him that they were going to "eat his mama and papa." Earlier when Olly is first introduced and is trying to learn to train with a sword, the Nights Watch tell him to just watch since he is so young. Olly tells them he wants to fight, that "he was the best archer in his village." Little man put those skills to use! Get back must be had!
