I loved watching this. My hometown, back when it still had that small town feel. I remember the Eau Claire park being built, the sound of the (then) super modern C-Trains and that skyline! It's changed so much. Great memories. Thank you for sharing with all of us!
Great little snapshot of Calgary in 1988. I love seeing the old buildings and houses that used to be on Macleod Trail. And neat to see the development of the Eau Claire area in progress. (It was complete with the mall and imax theatre by 1993, and the Hard Rock Cafe by 1995.) The bits of radio sprinkled in are nice as well. Great video! It took the algorithm too long to bring it to me.
Thanks for the comment! I think my videos are hard to find because they're not monotized. Here's a couple more of my Calgary videos... ruclips.net/video/fz1En8Ypirg/видео.html ruclips.net/video/ZBqduVcBd8w/видео.html ruclips.net/video/1LtQoD5gPZI/видео.html
This was three years before arriving here from Ottawa. Some places on Macleod Trail seemed to exist forever. I remember the Soundsaround on Macleod Trail near Chinook, sadly, it's now an Original Joe's with little to no parking. Who did mornings on Country 105 back in 1988? Doug Veronelly was working at Energy 1200 in Ottawa at this time in 1988. Did it really take five years to build Eau Claire Market only to see it close in May of 2024?
Think saw my self walkn downtown .spent alota time hangn out downtown😊 was at arcade alot down there and the bay.had nice cafeteria on top floor too relax for awhile 😊
Connor J. Finlayson also, maybe I could help out with some video footage. I live in Okotoks now, but the wife and I go out to Calgary once in a while, also, I’ve been going to the stampede for 30+ years
Johnhitbox I live in Calgary and spend a lot of time near these areas so it wouldn’t take much time for me. I’d just need to figure out where the few areas I don’t recognize are.
And before the crackheads and vagrants were allowed to destroy everything everywhere… There’s not a green space in the city that’s untouched by them. I can’t go to any park without seeing garbage littered all over the place, and shopping carts, and dumped stashes of clothes and tarps. It’s disgusting.
Proof that the C-Train line's non-separated layout was slow and outdated even when it first opened. I hope whoever designed it visited the skytrain at expo86 then came home to Calgary and got stuck at one of the many at-grade c-train crashes.
I would go back to that time in Calgary in a heartbeat.
Me too. Could watch the Olympics (3 months earlier), then watch the Flames win the Cup the following year
McLeod trail traffic! So light! Now congested no matter what day of week it is.
1988 was a banner year for Calgary. We had so much fun during that year. Calgary was a lot more fun in the 70's and 80's.

Train #2041 is still running to this day.

I was just finishing up grade 8. I miss this iteration of Calgary.

This was great, thanks for bringing this to us. I was 16 at the time, all those sights seem like yesterday to me.
Cool to see how Calgary looked back in the day. Thanks for posting.
There's still scaffolding at that building by the courts hahaha
I remember those good old days growing up. Riding the LRT line up and down to Whitehorn.
same trains still runing lol

I'd love make a video where I go to these spots today and do a comparison
Connor J. Finlayson good idea. Half of those station have been overhauled like crazy
Johnhitbox I may do it in the summer if I can get permission from the video poster

Remember when the City managed to keep the parks nice and tidy?

I left there in October after 8 years
May in Calgary. Why isn't it snowing?
It did. I had my baby son on May 1st, and on May 3rd is was cold and sleeting.
So small when Calgary tower was biggest tower lol
god damn country 105 i hated you so much XD. great footage!!!

They were constructing eau claire market back then?
Yup, and now it’s being torn down.
@@gs98999 it’s gonna look really nice when it’s finished
Was your friend David working in tv? Some of the shots look familiar.
no, he's an artist.
A few months after they hosted the Winter Olympics.
*before
Reads correct both ways if you forgive" bad grammar" - a couple months after(that) ..... They hosted the olympics.
It’s right without the comma - the Calgary Olympics were in February 1988, and this video was filmed in May.
Look at all the Canadians living in Canada.
Now I’m a minority in my own home, constantly surrounded by foreigners instead of my people.
Sort of like the indiginous must have felt back in the day...
Maybe" JesusFriedChrist" IS a Blackfoot.... Ever think of that.... Huh?
Kinda sounds like an 'injn name anyhow.
Crack wasn't even a street term at the time.
