    This is actually the usual choreography of every European production. The American and Australian versions have a slightly different choreography though...

    Das war eine tolle Cast! Besonders Uli Scherbel als Skimble, Munkustrap und Rum Tum Tugger. Hier im Video als Rum Tum Tugger.

    I much prefer this version of the choreography before they cut part of the judders at the beginning. It builds more before going in to bow & arrows section. Do we know why they cut that down at all? Was it ALW or Gillian Lynne who decided to do it?

      Yeah the full thing is the best and the most thrilling. Judders hasn't changed that much though, it was shortened from three repetitions of the tune to two. What is completely cut is the part from 0:46 to 1:03
      I wish I knew why it was shortened. Maybe they were simply thinking it was too long? The cut happened at the same time they shortened the Gumbie tap and Pekes&Pollicles.
      I am sure ALW was responsible for it. He is usually responsible for the changes. It all happened in 2003 when he cut down the number of musicians from 15 to 10 that he shortened so many numbers. This reorchestration caused that the whole show is about 5 to 7 minutes shorter than before.

      +mortifer | chrissi2810 I thought there was some more choreo missing round about the bums/minuet section when I watched it recently but I wasn't a 100% certain. I thought that cut & the one in Gumbie tap was to match with how the edited the film. I used to love the full version of Gumbie with the dance off between her & Mistoffelees, hated the edited down version it really jarred with you if you were used to the old version i thought. Though it's better than the recent London/ UK tour version, the tap was stronger but it bore a rather uncanny resemblance to the tune if 42nd st/you ain't ever had a friend like me from Aladdin. But shhhh don't tell ALW I said that. Lol. I'm curious to see what they've done with it on broadway. now, I've heard it & they've added the old ending back on to it, but it has new lyrics on the second chorus & it sounds like it goes into a ballet at one point! Very odd indeed. At least they've got the old Tugger back & not the rapping abomination!!

      The film had other, more atrocious, cuts in these songs though. The cuts made for the stage version worked better but I would not be sad if they decided now to recreate the full staging haha. I think the reason for taking Mistoffelees out of the tap back in 1996 was to adjust the London production to worldwide versions of Cats. Very sad - the more dancing, the better it gets.
      I saw the recent London version a few times and while the tap was very nice to watch and had good choreography, I found it way too less funny. The old version made me laugh each time I saw it and I missed that with the updated tap.
      Since Gillian Lynne is not involved in the Broadway version, it is totally different. The tap is no beetle's tattoo any longer but a normal Broadway tap number which turns into a "dance off" between Gumbie and a clock - sounds very odd. The music is mostly the old one that was used before the London Palladium rework, yeah.

      +mortifer | chrissi2810 oh I didn't know Gillian wasn't involved with Broadway as I know Chrissie Cartwright was over during rehearsals so I presumed there was some input from Gillian via Chrissie to the company. From what I've seen of bits of it I wouldn't say the broadway choreo is any better just different and unessersary really. I mean if they were going to re-envision the show then do it, but it's like they've kept some steps & disregarded others in the same number & replaced them with steps that aren't in Keeping with the show as a whole. I find that very odd & to be quite honest with you a bit disrespectful towards Gillian & her legacy of the work she's done on the show for over 30yrs!! I don't know who thought that was a good idea, but they want shooting!!!

      +jon clay sorry if that came accross as a bit if an ott rant, but I feel really passionate about this show, it's been a part of my life since a teen & it's the reason I became a dancer in the first place. Love this show, would've loved to have gotten the job when I was younger. Alas it wasn't to be & old age & arthritis has set in. ;-)

    What Is meant by Uncut jellicle ball? Do they cut out a bit in other shows now? I did see the UK tour and I think I remember they had cut the Mating Dance from it but I didn't know if that was cause it was a show in the afternoon and not the Evening

    • @chrissi2810
      @chrissi2810  10 лет назад +7

      All European productions since 2003/2004 use a newly arranged version of the Jellicle Ball where the part between 0:47 and 1:04 is cut. Also the current UK tour uses the cut version that's now used everywhere in Europe. It's very uncommon that they cut the Mating Dance though; even during afternoon shows it's usually included.

      mortifer | chrissi2810 Also 7:02 right? I saw there are some different between Australian version

    • @chrissi2810
      @chrissi2810  9 лет назад +4

      Amulet Zheng Yes, 7:02 is also different. But there have always been two variations of this part - this one was only used in the UK until 2003 and in Berlin from 2002-2004 (and maybe in Antwerp but I'm not sure). You can also here this melody in the ending credits of the Cats DVD.
      Every other production always used the other variation and still do.
