    Great video - even an experienced DVC owner might need to stop and think a bit before banking, borrowing, or scheduling a vacation based on the month of their use year.

    Not sure if these has ever been discussed. Is there a fee to bank your points and is there a fee to make reservations? A vacation club we own, that shall remain nameless, charges fees for everything. Including higher rates for doing them with an agent instead of the website. Also, the later in the year you bank, the higher the fee.

    I'm late to the party! Purchased DVC in september, I feel like whoever sold me my DVC membership got confused in the end. They did ask me when I mostly travel, and I said; lately we've been visiting DLR in November-February, we are NOT summer travelers. So we were to do a use year of October. But I just realised its backwards! They did an October banking deadline and my points are allocated in March.
    Im now understanding... My use year is March!?!?!?!?
    We are planning a January trip (using waitlist and scavenging the calendar) and just realised I need to use up a whole bunch of points before March!!??

    December is confusing to those new to DVC, we have 3 contracts all with a Dec use year. Even tho it is currently June 2022, we are still in our 2021 use year. We won’t receive our 2022 points until December of 2022, then will have until Nov of 2023 to use our 2022 points. Still gets confusing to this day when trying to decide vacations with my wife! 😛

      I also have a December UY and I hate it. It confused me so much. I wish I had been able to get a different UY because we typically go in November. 😕

    Great video. Any rumors on when we can borrow 100 percent of points?

    Use year always gets me, never mind it is the MONTH we are talking about! I watched numerous videos, asked many questions and gotten many answers, and still don't fully understand it! What use year would be idea for someone who typically takes vacations in spring (March - May)?

    • @YamKriegs
      @YamKriegs 2 года назад +3

      You want your use year to be the same month or no more than a month or two before when you normally travel so for you, February or March would be ideal as your use year. Think of use year as the bucket of points you are able to use for a trip’s particular dates. You want to pick a use year as close to the beginning of your travel time as possible which allows for more time to reuse or bank points in the event that you need to cancel.

      @@YamKriegs Thanks. So if I were to purchase a contract now (June 2022) with a use year of March, as long as it has 21 or 22 points, I could book a vacation NOW (for May 2023) without having to borrow from 2023. And that wouldn't create a vicious cycle of always having to borrow points. How much time do you have to bank your points before you lose them?

    • @chaleej5571
      @chaleej5571 2 года назад

      @@tpg5974 The points are set up as a "use year" - it is all about when you use the points for a stay.
      The booking window is based on home resort and only home resort. You can book 11 months out at your home resort.
      If you have a Feb UY and are traveling in March 2023, you can call or go online in April 2022 to book that stay with *current* 2023 UY pts (those points are valid for stays from Feb 1, 2023 to Jan 31, 2024). The points are *not* "borrowed" based on the date of the call - the are "current" because they fall during that 12 month use period - again, it's a "use year" and not a "booking year."
      When you go online to book in April 2022 to book that March 2023 stay, you can also use banked pts from your 2022 UY (if you have any left) and also borrow pts from your Feb 2024 UY (if you need to - right now there is a 50% borrowing restriction, so if you own 200 pts in your 2024 UY, you can only borrow 100 of them).

    • @chaleej5571
      @chaleej5571 2 года назад

      @@tpg5974 Just to add, if you purchased in June 2022 with a UY of March and the contract has points in the 2021 UY, those points are valid for stays from March 1, 2021 through February 28, 2022. If you bank them within the banking window (which already ended on Oct 31, 2021 - so they had better already be banked) then they would be valid for stays from March 1, 2022 through February 28, 2023.
      If you can't use them for a stay prior to February 28, 2023, they disappear into the void and you get zero value from them.
      This also means you cannot use March 2021 UY pts for a stay after February 28, 2023 - so they are no good for a May 2023 stay.

    When you buy direct, do you always get a December use year by default if you don’t ask for a different specific month? And are points always distributed on the 1st of every month?

    • @paulkrieger
      @paulkrieger 2 года назад +2

      Hey Kristen! Not necessarily - They try to balance Use Years, so if you don’t specifically request one they will randomly assign one. Points will load in on the 1st of the Month of your Use Year.

    • @chaleej5571

      They may offer you a UY that doesn't work well for your situation, though - so definitely do your homework beforehand.
      A good UY can provide some free insurance for your trips.

    Paul Use Year is confusing because there seems to be conflicting information out there. For example in 2020 I book a stay at my home resort for May 2021. When I book in 2020 I didn't have any points in my account but I would have my points in March 2021 two months before my stay. I was told by Disney that I would have to Borrow from my 2021 points to book for May 2021 or wait until March 1, 2021 when my points would be in my account. What I understand you are saying is that Disney should have allowed me to book without borrowing since I would have my points in my account at the time of my stay. See why it is confusing.

      Hey there - Definitely a confusing scenario… based on how I’m reading it though you should’ve been able to book the room you wanted without borrowing.
