Thank you for calling out ALL musicians--we should ALL know the language of the drum because rhythm is what draws the audience in and makes them DANCE. Being able to relate to the beat with "rhythmic modulation" is definitely NOT a parlor trick.
Dizzy Gillespie's last pianist, Mike Longo (RIP both) said that the jazz beat was three dimensional and multi-layered. Some of what Mike Longo talked about in his "Rhythmic Nature of Jazz" is right here in Kalani's video. Actually, it'd be cool if you checked out that video series--if you have the time, Kalani!
I got myself a djembe to learn the language of the drum. Us "non-drummers" have slept on the importance of pulse and rhythm for too long. Scales and harmony will only get you so far--without rhythm, there is no music. That goes for any genre ;)
