These shots look fantastic on the Z90. Really nice image quality. Balloons looking great, I missed them flying over the weekend, only caught the Nightglow on Thursday. Great stuff!

VERY happy to have finally found a channel using a pro camcorder, the test footage looks great!! I’m in limbo at the moment trying to decide between a pro camcorder with 4K such as the XF405 or the C100m2 with it’s 4K downsampled to 1080p out. I’m interested to know why you went with the Z90, was there something that made this camera more interesting than the others?

C100 is lovely but it's the same reason I didn't go for an FS5. I need an all in one unit which is compact but has all the functionality I'm used to. Everyone goes with still camera style now but there are just too many compromises on access to features, audio connectivity, zoom range etc. I still love the camcorder format as it works so well in so many environments.
Why the Z90. Well, I owned an XF100 and loved it but always battled to get accurate colours. Same with Panasonic. I also own a Sony AX53 and the colours are always spot on out of the box. Basically, as far as colour goes, Sony performs best in my opinion. It was also the smallest camera offering everything I needed + a 10-bit codec (nice extra but not essential).

TDCatTech thank you so much!! I’ve been trying for weeks to get someone to talk pro camcorder!! I can’t seem to find a channel that compares them or reviews them like the 100’s of dslr channels. I know that pro camcorder is the way I need to go, now its just a matter of which one. Thanks again!!

Beautiful footage (even on RUclips). Reminds me a bit of the old BBC 1 idents! :D And wow, those things are huge! No wonder you ran to your camera, so would I! :)

Looks gorgeous. But why did you go thru the Atomos? I thought the Z90 will output 4k in 8bits only anyway. So what's the benefit of the Inferno? Thanks.

      Couple of reasons.
      1. I love being able to shoot straight to ProRes. It's so much nicer to work with in Davinci / Premiere etc.
      2. It's much nicer monitoring on a larger screen with better options for peaking, zebras etc. and custom LUTs.
      3. HDMI output is 8-bit 4:2:2 (HD and 4K) whereas in camera 4K is 8-bit 4:2:0 so a little more colour info.
      4. I was on a tripod so it was already attached :-)
It's not required at all though. The XAVC-L codec on the Z90 is solid. I love it.

@@tdcattech xavc-L codec is solid but not for editing. the way it works it's like this: the first frame is fully recorded, the following frames are partially recorded - only what moves into frames is recorded, the background remains unchanged; so, it very taxing on your computer when editing because if you jump in the middle of the video, the software needs to reverse always to the first frame to give you the full picture ; it's excellent for boradcasting

That was absolutely gorgeous on my desktop system Torsten at 1080p. The isolation of the rooftop was fantastic with the balloons out of focus in the background was absolutely buttery-smooth at 55 secs. Just one nitpicking thing - notice how the seagull was slightly blown out while everything else was perfectly exposed? I struggle with this using my Sony FDR-AX53, which is slightly frustrating when my subject was a snow white bird of prey against dark trees. I've since picked up a quality variable ND filter which works by using two rotating plane-polarising filters. It's slightly better when set at the zero ND position - I suspect because it is just a plane polariser at that setting, with no interference. However, once I start to cross the planes, the auto-gain cranks up and the noise picks up substantially. It's all a matter of experimentation !

Haha! I knew someone would notice that! Good spot. I wasn't happy with it but I let it go as I was rushing to get these. Just a third or two lower would have sorted that seagull out! The bright white and the position of the sun plus me not paying attention was just too much. I always expose a little on the high side in SLOG3 but I went too far here.
      Thank you for the feedback.

Thank YOU for so freely sharing your excellent videos and knowledge - love your work. I'm very much learning with video - so any feedback is HUGELY appreciated. Any suggestions for how to approach that scene if you had been using your AX53 and had the same issue with the seagull ? ? ? ?

ND filter on the front and manual exposure (as much as is possible with AX53). Make sure you use your zebras too so you can spot this type of over-exposure straightaway.

      @TrailerYacht 6 лет назад

Thanks very much for your help Torsten - I'll give that a try and see if I can get better results. I've been keeping the aperture as wide as possible at all times to get better separation of the subject from the background, and using the variable ND to bring the automatic exposure levels down . . . sounds like it is definitely a practice, practice, practice thing ! Cheers, Gavin

@@tdcattech could you not have selected the gull in resolve a and altered the exposure and tracked it in resolve?
