Slide Rule Order of Operation

  • To efficiently use a slide rule, we have to pay attention to the order of operation. Not only do we have to select the right index or scale to use for the current operation, we have to set ourselves up for the next operation we need to do. The key is to minimize the movement of the slide and the cursor to reduce the chance of inducing error.
Here is a virtual Pickett N-3 slide rule for you to use...

I am unclear on why you start with the cursor. You can multiply 30*40 in 2 moves (move slide index to 3 on bottom stator, then the cursor to 4 on slide, which gives 1200 on bottom stator), then the slide over to 2 at the cursor. The number 600 is now at the right slide index. Three steps total. You don't need to start with the cursor move if C and D are adjacent on the slide/stator. In fact, you only need 1 cursor move. Granted, 2 moves starting with division is quicker.

there is no right way to do it. when I put this together I wanted to balance speed with clarity as many watching this have never heard of a slide rule, much less seen one prior to this series. I just wanted to make things very clear. My thought was starting with the cursor makes the first position of the slide more precise. But as you point out, by taking care and having good eyes you can line up the index or first value quite well without the cursor.

I'm using The Slide Rule by Lee Johnson but can't understand his example explanations. Too many ways! 😂
