  • The Army makes "lubrication orders" or "lube orders" for every vehicle in their inventory so that operator's keep their vehicles in tip top shape. In this video, we take you through the care and feeding of the 2 cylinder M274 series of "mechanical mules" used by the U.S. Army and the Marine Corps from about 1960 through the mid 1980's. The earlier 4 cylinder is almost the same but for having a different noise maker.

    Some folks say "real" mechanics don't wear rubber gloves. When your wife has the nose of a bloodhound and doesn't like the smell of grease and gas, well......

    I wonder why 3 people didn't like this video. I found it very informative & well worth watching to the very end. I've been watching the whole series on this M274A2 that you found. Would you be willing to say what your final negotiated price on it was? I'm just curious.

      Thanks for the nice comments Wolfgang. It used to frustrate me, but now like water off a duck's back. I paid a little less than $4k for it - but we collectively thought the motor might be bad or at least the starter. It did end up needing a new starter and all that gas tank work, but it was a good deal at the time. They have really increased in value. Stay tuned because I just bought another one today - going to strip and paint it and refurb it mechanically - not a full restoration, but it should be a nice mule when we are done.

    Guessing you drained, flushed, and then refilled all the oils at some point after this video because it had been sitting for so long! Thanks for the LO walk through.

      MRrwmac Thank you for the comment MRrwmac! The Mule got new fluids all around. We are about to replace all of the axle seals as they are all leaking at this point. Video soon.

    I have one at home. It’s a 68 in pristine condition. We had these when I served as a Grunt in the Marines. I use is in parades and always get great comments from the crowd.🇺🇸👍

      Good stuff Peter and thank you for your service! Mules always attract a crowd. I recently bought an early 4 cylinder model that I am going to restore....love 'em!

    I came across your restoration project today while looking around RUclips and I really enjoyed it. My two sons and I are officially starting our restoration project on my 68 model. It has been in the family for about 25 years, and the last time it ran was about 17 years ago. I purchased a complete engine rebuild kit from an old distributor in Taccoa Ga years ago which includes gaskets, new exhaust pipe/manifold, new cylinders, pistons etc. I found your fuel tank work informative, because ours looks the same, except it has 17 year old gas in it...I may just purchase a new tank. Anyway, thanks again for the videos on the restoration, I can't wait to get mine running so we can start enjoying it again.

      Thank you GAdirtroad! Appreciate the feedback. Sounds like you have a nice Mule project. We ended up fixing our tank in part because we could not find a surplus/new one. Emery Mule Parts is making new ones out of aluminum, but they were out when we called. Ultimately happy that we fixed it because we got to refine our MIG skills on thin sheet metal!

      Portrayal Press just got my wife’s grandfathers mule. She wants to restore and enjoy it. Don’t know where to start. Took the engine cover off and it has a Hercules engine stamp. Could you point us in the right direction as to where we could get parts and manuals? Where should we start? Greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Can you please tell me why the US Army did not like the Willy's 4-cylinder engine? Seems to me that it would have more power.

    • @Portrayalpress

      Greetings Ralph. The 4 cylinder ran hot and would burn up cylinders and throw bearings. I am guessing they did not quite get the baffling down right. I am not sure how much experience Willys had making air cooled engines, but their engine just did not hold up well to the rigors of military use. The Army ran a rebuild program after the Continental (airplane engine guys) designed the two cylinder (built by Hercules) and replaced the vast majority of 4 cylinders Willys engines with the 2 cylinder version. I have an M274A1 - the second generation of 4 cylinder Willys engine that is in line for restoration. I gather that the 2nd gen worked better, but still had these problems. The Hercules engine ended up being used in other applications too so once it got into the supply chain, no one wanted the Willy's engine version any more. The 4 cylinders do go faster though!

    Is $120.00 per tire sound about right, they are non directional tires.

      Coker makes mule tires and they are closer to $180....so if those are the right tires...good deal!

    What type of Gear oil did you use? GL1 or gL5?

    • @Portrayalpress
      @Portrayalpress  9 лет назад

      PAHardcore570 We used GL1. Some folks suggest GL5 is better, but I have also heard that GL5 will react with any bronze bushings, etc., so we generally stick to GL1 with older vehicles.

    • @m925a1
      @m925a1 9 лет назад +1

      That's what I used. If GL1 doesn't have yellow metal properties it can ruin the gears

    Schöne Grüße aus Deutschland!
    Leider habe ich mein Schulenglisch 😣 total vergessen und muß meinen Text auf Deutsch schreiben.
    Habe mir außerhalb der Europäischen Union sehr viel Farmland gekauft und benötige einen robusten Lastenesel mit dem ich Arbeitsgeräte von A nach B transportieren kann. Ich dachte zuerst an eine Moto Guzzi Ercole 500 oder an eine Honda Gyro 50 UP mit 2 Takt Motor irgendwas mit Ladefläche. Leider muß ich für das Spielzeug noch den Zoll bezahlen und es einige Tausend Kilometer weit zum Farmland transportieren und das muß sich alles rechnen. Als Alternative besorge ich mir einen gebrauchten Baggerlader von meinem Nachbarn. Ihre Videos gefallen mir sehr gut!

      Danke für die netten Kommentare. Ein Maultier würde großartig funktionieren. Wir benutzen unsere auf unserer Farm die ganze Zeit. Es wäre wahrscheinlich nicht einfach, jemanden nach Deutschland zu bringen.

      Kein Problem, es gibt Leute von uns, die Deutsch in der Schule gelernt haben, in Deutschland beim US-Militär gedient haben, und es gibt auch immer Google Translate.
