  • Airfix Super Flight Deck Game From the 1970`s / 1980`s.
Yes, that really was all it did, though it seemed good at the time !
I`m afraid the elastic band to use the launcher is no longer up to the job at all !

I had this for Christmas in the late 70's. I can remember that once it was set up the rest of my family had to stay in the far side of the living room due to the plane flying across the room. Happy memories.

Got this for xmas because the tv commercial looked cool. Used it for 5 minutes and never touched it again. They really knew how to make commercials to sell crap.

Got this iabout 77... my Dad was an airframe fitter at Hawker Siddeley in 1960s and then in Germany and Holland in 70s. So this was just the best. Mine always worked fine. Had the fishing line on the curtain rail and the flight deck on the dining table. Loved the way it got to the end of the wire and then turned. I used to then place my toy soldiers on the flight deck and play kamikaze strafing :)

I had a U-Fly-It that had a "catapult" built into the runway... you would launch it up the string, the plane would swivel around at the top and glide back down the string to the runway. The plane was a single engine Cherokee Archer or other similar airframe. This version also just used a stick, rather than a yolk for control. The U-Fly-It and the Vertibird were my ALL TIME favorite toys from my childhood!

got this for Christmas years ago. Worst thing i did was put a plank of wood between the main deck and the end of the wire. Tried landing my jet on the plank and totally nailed ripping of all the under carriage, my dad solved the damage with super glue

  • @deathstrike

The American version is made by Schaper. It comes in a variety of sets from the basic with a simple catapult and a Piper Cherokee, to the Barnstorming Set (I have a rebuilt version of this) with a sort of "game" where you try to pick up a mailbag on a sort of goalpost. The Barnstorming set has a little British Sopwith Camel. To an Instructor pilot set with yoke controls instead of a stick and a twin engine plane, to the one everyone wanted, the Carrier Set with F-4 Phantom airplane.
I know a lot of people were disappointed in its very simplistic play (launch plane with rubber band catapult, plane spins around on fishing line and you sort of "control" it with either a stick or yoke) and while it was a success initially, the wow factor ended and it became a dust collector. Rebuilt sets though, command a good price as this toy is hard to find complete. The Mattel Vertibird was the hot toy all the boys wanted for Christmas and birthdays, and was more successful.

In about 1974 I wanted one of these for Christmas. Luckily for me, a boy brought his into school a couple of weeks before end of term. I watched him set it up, it looked exciting! Then he started to operate it.....and what a load of shit it was! Absolutely pathetic. Then I thought, 'I bloody hope mum hasn't got mine yet?' She hadn't, PHEW!

Most disappointing Christmas present I ever received; and it had looked so good in the Littlewoods catalogue and in those TV adverts (those TV adverts maybe wouldn't be legal today). Second most disappointing Christmas present ever was also by Airfix Combat Pack which was *barely* OK until both of the disc firing pillboxes broke after about a day and a half of reasonable use. I was annoyed with Airfix for releasing such rubbish toys as I had been making their kits for years; they were trading on their good name to shift shoite. Shame on you Airfix.
