Thanks, Tony. I'm a full-time commercial photographer and I've been using the R6 for about 6 months now. I thought I knew the camera pretty well, but this taught me a thing or two. You guys are awesome.
I have learned a ton in the 1hr and realized how much I didn't know about this camera. One addition I learned while I was walking through your suggested settings - I turned on the display focus chart regardless of auto focus or not and wow mind blown, I push the auto focus button, then I can manually change it with the lens dial and there are red highlights that appear around the layer that I am manually focusing towards... I was doing this to focus on the outside through blinds and window and I could auto focus on the blinds, then manually focus to outside and it looks excellent.
You know, I gotta say, you always come through with the best videos that we all can understand and get the most from. I recently bought the Canon R6 and looked at several tutorials... which would leave a lot out, go too fast, and/or confuse me. But you really DO Rock. Why did I bother to look at anyone else's tutorial.
Yes, please do. In the R6 II videos I've seen the author said what some of the settings should be but didn't explain WHY a certain setting was selected. You go into MUCH more detail.
Adding to this. The various AF modes have been driving me crazy. I'm coming from a 5D3, and it's been painful so far experimenting in the field. Lots of out of focus shots, and the camera is not locking onto the eye and tracking it.
Having just watched the video for the R6, an updated version coving R6 mk 2 would be very beneficial as many of the menus are different. Ditto the comments on AF modes, the WHY behind some of the settings, also setting the back button focus is worth revision. I've bookmarked this video and will return.
I have been a Panasonic user since before the GH1. Owned video cameras before that and moved to each new GH camera up to the GH4. Months ago I bought a Canon M6 mk2 to have higher resolution stills and experiment with DPAF for 4K video. Loved the camera but it had its limits for video. Finally just bit the bullet and bought a R6. This is what we always wanted the GH successor to be. Such an amazing camera. Now I’m here learning more about this new sexy beast. Subscribed after years of just watching.
Tony, I've been following you for my whole photography carreer. Watched all the tutorials and also the one for my older camera 6D MII. Now i'm taking a leap to a new camera, R6 and i'm so excited that again you are the one that can teach me the little big things about this camera. THANK YOU for being here cause you've made me learn photography the fun and fast way!
I'm a newbie at photography and will mostly take photos for personal use. This video was very helpful to configure my new Canon R6. I set the back button focus, so that will be different for me since I'm used to using the AF feature on cameras. Purchased your Stunning Photography book and Flash training to help me take great photos. Thank you Tony!!
I’m so happy I found your page. It helped me a lot. I had changed setting without understanding and my camera wasn’t taking pictures correctly. My camera is ready to take pictures of my kids cheer competition. Thank you. thank you. thank you. I absolutely subscribed for future lessons.
this is the best in shorten tutorial (not too long, not too short)about canon R6, and with the reading of the camera user manual (better sooner than later) it s ready to go, canon r6 unleashed :). will take a look at your other videos. thanks for this one :)
This training came at such a perfect timing. I just bought an R6. Better to watch this video than having to read the entire manual, specially since I'm new to the Canon ecosystem. THANK YOU :)
@@MichaelCTruth To be honest, I have held both cameras in my hand at the store and didn't notice the difference..maybe because I wasn't particularly looking for that "plastic feeling"..hope this answer your question :)
Just subscribed. Thank you so much for these tutorials you do. I also passed my Part 107 exam through one of your videos. You are always spot on. God bless you.
Many thanks for this Tony, very helpful. Just updated/upgraded to R6 MkII from a 5D MkII and a bit of a change. Loving the journey so far. Lionel in the UK 🙂
I’m only 15 minutes into the video and I an loving it so far. Great detail and great tips. I have already organised a label for reminders to stick behind my screen and I have created a link on my phone for the R6 Manual. Thank you
I think the greatest lesson for anyone considering any brand/model of camera, is to make time to watch these comprehensive reviews. Then you can truly decide if you wish to shell out the money. The one question that should always be answered: if I buy a particular camera, can I keep it for 5 years to get a 'return' on my investment ? Photography can be a VERY expensive hobby.
I appreciated that your tutorial indicates the tab and line number of each of the topics you discussed as well as your tip to put a sticky on the camera back noting how/where to find certain key info. This leads me to the following suggestion. With the expectation that I will be an R6 owner, I downloaded the massive advanced user manual this weekend. YIKES, It's nearly 900 pages! Since a tutorial is a wonderful tool for anyone new to the subject at hand, I think it would be helpful to everyone if your future tutorials would cite the page number or section of the user manual where the specific info you are discussing can be found, as well as the date of the manual version you are citing In perusing the downloaded pdf, I felt like an elementary grade child using a college level text book trying to solve a homework problem. Very sad.
One (very!) minor point about navigating the menu system: After pressing "menu" the "Q" button quickly switches between each "bank" of menu options (red, purple, blue, more purple, yellow, orange, green). Once you're used to it, that can speed up menu navigation quite a bit. This is true on many Canon cameras, not just "R" series.
I am so thankful for this video. My 60D broke yesterday. (yah I am a little behind the times). I ordered the R6. I found the pdf camera manual online and 😨😳 yikes! I have so much to learn. Your video is so much easier to understand and veryhelpful. I will likely have to watch it over and over to get it all down. I especially appreciate all the little settings and details. I would be one of those people thinking my camera was broken when I just pressed the lock button or something haha. Thanks so much. I haven't found anything so straight forward and detailed. Lots of info! I may have to slow down the playback speed. I thought I was in fast forward there for a while- I kept pausing and rewinding. Ahahaha. Keep up the great videos! Can't wait to buy your books and videos soon. Just discovered you guys a few weeks ago when searching for off camera flash tutorials.
You are very knowledgeable and I just ordered my canon r6 and excited. As a beginner and taking an online course you greatly explain everything and with all that I just ordered you photography book. My name is George thanks again and great videos
Wow! I just got the Canon R6, 2 days ago as a birthday present and i JUST finished watching this incredible tutorial! I can’t thank you enough for putting this together. After watching this entire video I feel more confident and I actually feel that I know a lot more about my camera and the endless settings it has. I even did your custom buttton configuration for eye AF, and I think i will get used to that very quickly. Again, thanks for sharing all the knowledge!! I suscribed to the channel, I will keep an eye on your videos. Thanks. :)
I just like to say that your video is excellent. Your explanation of the different screens and menu options are really well done clear concise and simple. As a professional photographer have to say that I greatly appreciated this video. Thank you.
GREAT VIDEO. I tried your power saving methods and my battery lasted as long as my old one did on my 7D. A couple settings I didn't like for taking photos of downhill mountain bikers and I'm going to go back to I think Display Performance of Smooth and Eco Mode Off and see how the battery life goes. If it dies too quick, I'll go back to your recommendations - they definitely work GREAT! Thanks!
Tony, thank you so much for your tutorial on focusing and switching from a single point focusing to eye detect. I really needed that tutorial and I am very grateful for your clear explanation.
What an excellent walk through tutorial! As a new owner of an R6, I may have spent the rest of my life figuring all of these features out. Thank you, thank you... also not sure if anyone has ever said this to you but you are a true doppelganger for Fred Armisen looks and tone of voice (it s a compliment). Really enjoy learning from you. New subscriber for sure. Thanks.
It was a lot but it was worth it Tony, thanks a lot for this video. I love the pace of your tutorials. Like most of us (I think anyway :) I am impatient and don't want to sit through unnecessary blah blah. Your explanations and recommendations are to the point, quick, and helpful. Thanks again!
A couple points that were not touched in the tutorial: 1. A remote is not even necessary anymore. Remote Live View shooting in the Camera Connect app works so well and lets you see composition, adjust settings and move the focus point 2. Electronic 1st. Curtain can introduce "half bokeh" when the shutter speed is very fast (
Tony thanks for the video, I actually purchased my R6 from KEH using credit for trading in some older equipment. I was able to use the codes on both sides of the purchase plus get extra credit from KEH for trading towards the R6. I actually ended up with extra funds that they gave me more credit for putting the extra on a KEH gift card. I used that plus the code to purchase a RF 85Mm F2 Micro from them after watching used lenses for a few months on their site. Thanks guys.
Thanks so much. Like others I have just bought an R6 and the thought of reading that manual is mind blowing. Great tutorial, I found it very useful. Probably something simple but as yet I haven’t found the shutter release timer, but only had it a few hours.
Hi Tony, I've just picked up my R6 (switched from a 5dIV) - fantastic video, very informative as always. Looking forward to getting out this morning and putting some of these tips into action - I shoot wildlife so the eye tracking in particular is one I can't wait to try out, hopefully I can adapt to your suggestion of dual BB focus. As always, another great tutorial! Very informative and helpful, I've followed you guys for some time now and always love your videos. Should have me R6 in the next couple of weeks will be revisit this video to review all the great tips and guidance again. Great work
Good grief. Finally found how to comment. Really nice, succinct tutorial! Wish I had an R6. Thanks for explaining CLog, one of the words i’ve heard so often but didn’t know what it was. Ditto for a few other tech terms. Many cameras these days sound much better than my Nikon D600, maybe for the focusing ability as much as anything.
Hi tony. Great video about R6. Thanks a lot. I've one question about Electronic shutter. I did some tests with my R6 and got that at higher SS there is some lost of light with Electronic shutter mode special at high shutter speeds (1/500 +). My test results (with ISO 100, M mode, One Shot, all photos processed in dpp4 converted to monochrome and all lens corrections disabled, sharpness and noise reduction set to 0) were: At 1/8000 SS the EV loss is roughly between -0,70 and -1,20, compared to Mechanical; At 1/2000 SS the EV loss is roughly between -0,20 and -0,35, compared to Mechanical; At 1/500 SS the EV loss is roughly between -0,05 and -0,10, compared to Mechanical; Under 1/500 the EV loss is further less and less noticeable. With the EFC Shutter mode the results are between Mechanical and Electronic shutter. Any thoughts about that?
Thanks for the tutorial! I think that the flash you showed is for the Sony mount, and you would of course want the Canon mount, or the V860II-C. I know it's way too late to change it but you spelled it "focus peakiung." I suspect Chelsea did that as a practical joke on you.
The sensor cleaning function has also an undocumented side effect on Canon cameras. You can hear the shutter sound during it. The camera takes a photo and looks at hot pixels and masks them out - at least from jpeg-files. You should have the lens cap on for this.
If you cant have 2 SD cards, or prefer to have more space than redundancy without having to sacrifice redundancy you can set up the camera to download immediately to the cellphone as pictures are taken. You will need a smartphone with enough space and a custom app to make that happen.
Thanks, Tony. I'm a full-time commercial photographer and I've been using the R6 for about 6 months now. I thought I knew the camera pretty well, but this taught me a thing or two. You guys are awesome.

Mind blown. Thanks for all the nitty gritty detail!
Great video. I have the R6 and it's the best I have had outstanding performance!!!!!
Thanks for the tutorial! I have an R5 and still learned many things about the menu system.
I think the C-RAW stands for Compressed Raw. It uses a lossy compression but the differences should be minimal in most cases.
Yeah you're right. C-Log is Canon Log and my brain got confused.
Thank you, another great video.
6:45 I use it! I have a radio controlled remote, which I prefer over the Canon remote.
Thanks Tony! I’ve been waiting for this for some time now! I had to use the R5 tutorial to get my settings down !
Hi tony. Great video about R6. Thanks a lot.
I've one question about Electronic shutter. I did some tests with my R6 and got that at higher SS there is some lost of light with Electronic shutter mode special at high shutter speeds (1/500 +). My test results (with ISO 100, M mode, One Shot, all photos processed in dpp4 converted to monochrome and all lens corrections disabled, sharpness and noise reduction set to 0) were:
At 1/8000 SS the EV loss is roughly between -0,70 and -1,20, compared to Mechanical;
At 1/2000 SS the EV loss is roughly between -0,20 and -0,35, compared to Mechanical;
At 1/500 SS the EV loss is roughly between -0,05 and -0,10, compared to Mechanical;
Under 1/500 the EV loss is further less and less noticeable.
With the EFC Shutter mode the results are between Mechanical and Electronic shutter.
Any thoughts about that?
Will you be making one for the R6mk2 also ?
Fantastic Tony… as a novice I learned so much…. Although I am a Nikon DSLR shooter still. Cheers, Johno
Thanks for the video tutorial.
Great tutorial!!! Thanks for taking the time.

Thanks for the tutorial! I think that the flash you showed is for the Sony mount, and you would of course want the Canon mount, or the V860II-C.
I know it's way too late to change it but you spelled it "focus peakiung." I suspect Chelsea did that as a practical joke on you.
We are waiting for a R6 mkll tutorial!
Tony, that was an awesome video! So much information and all important. This stuff is hard to make and really needs experience so I appreciate it.
Glad it was helpful!
You will need a smartphone with enough space and a custom app to make that happen.
thank you for this video and its very helpful
Excellent tutorial.
