love those old games , they really stack the line on defense 8 men up front, and the kicker for the browns looks like a linebacker, can remember watching Leroy Kelley in the earley 1970s on t.v.

Kicker Lou "the toe" Groza was once the starting offensive tackle for the Browns in his long career. At this point I think he was only an occasional backup lineman, if even playing there at all.

Steelers had a lot of mean-ness going for them - and cool unis - and that was about all. Roy Jefferson, Ben McGee, and Lloyd Voss were really good players. They beat the Browns and then hammered a good Cardinals team, 30-9. Would not stand for losing to the terrible New York Giants, beat them badly, and finished the season, wasting the expansion Falcons, scoring 50 points in that season finale to go 5-8-1.

Interesting to see head coach and former assistant to Vince Lombardi...Bill Austin's Steelers. One can see the fundamentals there. However the quality of player seems to vary. When they execute, they pull off some great plays.

  • @tommythomason6187

Steelers had lost five straight games but not quitting - not at all. That was a gutsy play early in the 1st quarter by Marv Woodson (#47) coming up hard on that sweep and tangling with John Wooten (#60). By sacrificing his body on that play, he gummed up the outside run and there were three Steelers all over the runner for a big 5-yd loss. Noticed a good bit of blitzing by Steeler linebackers that forced some poor throws and sometimes resulted in sacks. The Steelers would next pound a good Cardinals team, 30-9. Steelers went 5-8-1 in 1966.

The same week as this game, Dallas lost to the Eagles who were also good in 1966. If the Browns had won this game, they would have moved into first by a half game.

Although qb Ryan led the Browns with collins and Jimmy Brown to win the the NFL championship in 63 , he didn't know anywhere but inside the pocket . thats why he got sacked so much . You had to wait till the Brian Sipe years and Kosar to an extant of cleveland qb's who deftly got out of the pocket to gain time to throw to an open reciever . Although sipe didn't have the arm of a terry bradshaw , he was one of smartest almost effortless qb scramblers i ever saw . He also had that high touch pass to get over defensive lineman and linebackers hands to get to a release running back or reciever for a 10 or 15 yard gain. And also when Sipe threw that high long pass(about 45 yards max) it would just go over a defensive back hands into a browns recievers hands. btw, Leroy Kelly was one of the greatest muddy grass field runners i ever saw . During the Steelers superbowl champs dynasty of the 70's and early 80's, Cleveland a low ranked team in the same division gave the steelers tough games and won a few too in the regular season. wtf did they call it , the turnpike or thruway rivalry ? cleveland and pittsburg are only around 140 miles from each other by roadways .

Was this the first year the Steelers wore black helmets? And their unis today should look just like these; the yellow stuff on the shoulder pads, rugged looking, unpainted facemasks and black shoes. Looked like the Steelers had a better defense. Definitely some hard noses on that defense - Bill Saul, Andy Russell - lots of Steeler defenders around on every tackle.
