    Thank you Cal, for your informative video on freezing squash. Would that work for butternut squash? Im wanting to freeze some, but never have done butternut squash. . So it probably,would be done, about the same way, I imagine it would, just bigger pieces maybe. I will give it a try, I freeze zucchini squash , for zucchini Blueberry Bread , and it is so yummy !, I usually make as many loaves as I can, becuase my grown kids & grandkids love it. Good video and tips! Now if I could just get some squash! Lol, they flowered then all the rain knocked the flowers off so we’ll see. I usually blanch but we never have squash long enough to go bad with a hungry family of four, two teenagers, lol we just keep it in the fridge and use it up. I wish I had enough I needed to freeze it. Heck I just wish I had some for dinner at this point, lol.

    When I froze my zucchini right out of my garden last year and when I went to defrost it my zucchini was soggy. This year I’m trying blanching first. But I noticed if I boiled them any longer than a minute they were already going transparent. I really hope I didn’t mess it up

    • @SouthernCountryLiving
      @SouthernCountryLiving  4 года назад +2

      When we freeze squash we mostly plan on using it for casseroles and soups because it is soft and mushy after it thaws out. If you freeze the individual slices to cook I recommend that you put them in the saute pan while they are still frozen. This works good for us. Our squash in our garden didn't produce a lot this year so we didn't get to freeze any this year.

    I just watched a video where the young woman cut them to bite size pieces and then added water to her freezer bag and froze. I have no idea how to preserve squash and have 4 plants I’ve pollinated and their coming in now. I need to study up on how to preserve them. I love squash. Mines yellow squash. I did one bag like she said and try her way. Then I’ll do yours when the next one comes in. I’m learning…..

    • @SouthernCountryLiving
      @SouthernCountryLiving  2 года назад +1

      It is not necessary to add water to the squash but it won't hurt anything either. Yellow squash makes the best squash casserole. Check out our video for squash casserole:

    Just wondering what is the best way to thaw the squash before frying it?

    • @SouthernCountryLiving
      @SouthernCountryLiving  4 года назад +5

      Thanks for watching. We just put the squash in the refrigerator and let it thaw before cooking. We mostly use frozen squash for casseroles. We don't fry a lot of squash. If you plan on frying your frozen squash then you need to batter it and freeze it on a tray before putting it in your freezer bag to prevent it from all sticking together. If you prepare your squash like this then you can start frying it straight out of the freezer with out thawing. That is why we mostly make casseroles out of our frozen squash.
      Have a great week,
      Calvin and Marie

    What's the best way to freeze them if we were going to fry them later on?

    • @SouthernCountryLiving
      @SouthernCountryLiving  2 года назад

      It is best to freeze them in individual slices first before you bag them up. If you want to you can batter them before freezing and they will be easier to fry up.

  • @hellestinebeamon1717
    @hellestinebeamon1717 2 года назад

    I know this is an older vid but I can't find a good answer. What's the point of blanching first? We have TONS of zucchini and just purchased a vacuum sealer. Is it necessary to blanch to save it for a year?

    • @SouthernCountryLiving
      @SouthernCountryLiving  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching. You can freeze with out blanching but the vegetables will not last for a long period. If you want your frozen vegetables to last for one year, then I recommend that you blanch them before freezing. I know that it is a lot of extra work.
      Have a great week,

      @@SouthernCountryLiving thanks Calvin and Marie! I just happened to find an article from Missouri State Uni that explained what I was looking for too. I couldn't wrap my engineer's brain around enzymes that break down and discolor the vegetables continuing to work when frozen. But apparently, even when frozen, the enzymes are still at work! Blanching stops them for good. Thank you for the video and the response. Here's to heating up the kitchen! Lol
