I played and gigged for YEARS with like 2 drive pedals and a multi FX and it worked great, I'm a huge proponent of that for new guitarists and I wish I had an option as good as the plethora when I was starting. It's such a great way to keep a small manageable board that's legit gig worthy. I was able to keep that and convert to all individual pedals over time. First get a good overdrive you like, then get another because obviously, then get a compressor because digital compression just isn't quite the same, and then of course you'll end up with a dedicated delay unit, etc etc. The nice thing about that route is you're never starved for an effect and each time you buy a new pedal you know exactly what you want and it'll feel like a real upgrade.
@@fritsvanzanten3573 sometimes you have to just look away, avoid reviews, avoid visiting your favourite gear shop...and just use the gear you have, record and mix.

Ditto. In reality, when I'm playing live, I generally keep pedal settings as-is, but I occasionally need to tweak my distortion, boost, delay, and modulation pedals for specific songs. A programmable pedal is not convenient. I had the Boss GT-1 which is analogous to the TC Plethora and tweaking on the fly was not convenient. Changing banks is equally inconvenient. I'll take discrete pedals any day.
Hmm- when I was young you could buy a real fender for a reasonable amount, and tube amps were fairly cheap- mostly because everyone wanted solid state amps and digital rack effects which were both sort of the new kids on the block so- everyone wanted to try them. Now- even a Harmony tube amp- Harmony by the way was like the most basic, low-end, generic brand when I was a kid- sells for over 400 bucks. And a real, American made Strat costs some serious cash. That said- I will agree there are tons more budget options on the market than there used to be. And- those options beat the heck out of what we had to choose from in the early 80s. A lot of these budget guitars and pedals nowadays are really good- I'm not ashamed to play anywhere with my gear- I can keep up. Most of the time the guys I play with are freaked out how good these pedals sound once they hear the price- then they want to know all about them. My Peavey Transtube gets a lot of attention as well- ppl are shocked how much like a tube amp it sounds. It's not spot on, but it's very close.
@@stoneysdead689 Good point, I suppose there is rarely an absolute truth that applies to us all. Great video guys. Wasn't at all long-winded. Cheers to the editing team, I suppose. Great array of pedals demonstrated and good showcasing of the TC Plethora. And thanks for the unbiased review and demonstration. More channels should be like this.
I'm a bit late to this party but it would be nice to see how this budget board goes up against something like the Valeton GP-200 multi-fx up to the low end Helix-ish price point.
Can't help but notice that every time the Spark boost pedal appears that it is always the one knob mini version, it would be nice to hear how the bigger four knob version sounds.
I have both of those. The bigger version sounds great too. It has a toggle switch for clean, fat or mid boost which is really nice. I personally keep the EQ at noon but I was thinking of trying it with the treble cranked and using it as a treble boost.
I agree because I have one.The tone shaping on the big one is reeeally good for overdriving a pedal, or an amp, that is just breaking up. Good for pretty much any tone shaping, from scooped mids to old school. It doesn't have the momentary function that the small one has but the three way gives three great basic tones and the treble and bass work well over their full range.
Great stuff lads. Just like a couple of lads sorting out a train set layout. They are painted pretty colours for a good reason. "COME ON BOYS, IT'S ON THE TABLE, ITS CHIPS ",
Honest piece of advice for people getting their first effects. I've been playing for 10 years now and I'm the pedal kind of guy. I like swapping pedals around and constantly changing stuff on my board. Since I bought the Quad Cortex, things changed drastically for me. I'm gradually changing from true analog pedals to digital only. At first, I used the QC for amp sims and drives only and kept all my analog drives, modulation, delays and fuzz. Best example: The Boss CE2w Chorus. I never thought I'd replace this pedal digitally. But the QC has a model for that exact pedal and it sounds epic! Even stereo. Sure, the QC costs almost 2 grand, but imho all the digital multi fx pedals have become so good over the last 2-3 years. I tried the Boss GT1000/CORE as well and it was absolutely amazing. So my personal conclusion: If you're new to effects, buy yourself a decent multi fx pedal, like the helix POD GO, for example. It will look very expensive at first. But trust me: If you go the pedal route, everything you'll buy will cost more than that over the years, because you have to include cables, board and power into the equation.
Tbh I spend like 40 minutes watching closely and then I had get back to work and listen all the way to the end as a podcast goes.... You're great guys. That was super fun, bit ridiculous and may even has no conclusion but it was tone of fun. Have a great day!
I just got the model M and the King of Blues. I have Strymon pedals and love them, but they are not leaving the house, but the Tone City is going to be out at the clubs all summer. They are amazing, and purchased both for 150 bucks.
I watched some of this in the morning, some in the afternoon and the rest at night. I like these long, hang out videos. On another note, the Durple after 3 plus years remains a staple on my board. On my Marshall Origin 20 I use it... and the boost on the foot switch for the sweetest, warm, 70s sounding overdrive.
Took me ages to get through this, I feel like I was there with you. I don't think I have spent that much time sitting cross legged on the floor since primary school. As a feat of human endurance, I doff my metaphorical hat to you both.
Watching this video was awesome .... I've been torn as to which route to take... this video covered many of the pedals on my wish list...and the DP Dumble spunded awesome! My list has about about 12 slots to fill, and about 20 or so pedals inhabe my eye on... from TC , EHX , MXR , JHS , etc... to start with even just the tuner I want, and 1 or 2 others, plus some power, I'd be close to the cost of the MX5... so I have finally decided to go that rpute for sure. Maybe we will add to that with some pedals later, and as its small it would be OK as part of a hybrid board with a few other widgets ... but it seems like it would get us the best start... and it's not like either boutique pedals or multi-fx would make a lot of difference to some newbs with a solid state practice amp...lol the MX5 just seems so flexible and powerful for a really good price, in a small and handy form factor... I'll still always want some stuff like Soul Food, and the HoF and Flashback, and a few others, this video also gave me another example of how great those pedals sound... Others I'd love to see you and DP do a video on, Sugar Drive, Bonsai, Packrat, Oceans 11 and Canyon... let me know if those are featured in a previous shootout video or something. Cheers
Great video, love your content! Don’t know if tc electronics already fixed it but when I owned a Plethora X5 what bugged me the most was that it didn’t support trails between patches. Switching between patches always resulted in a brief moment of clean tone which made the change to another patch very obvious to the audience. Hope this is not the case anymore.
This is such a great video guys, I absolutely love this format - it’s exactly what we’d all love to do in the shop! Thank you very much, keep more of this coming across all of the different product range please!
Made it through the whole thing. I think the plethora makes a good less expensive choice for an H9. It’s nice to have programmability on modulation and delay.
The end killed me😄 watched the hole video and i really understand why you guys had such struggle with the Tone City Pedals, i mean they're sooo great for the price!
I bought the EHX Glove from your OD shootout and it's my fav pedal. That pedal is a must have on my pedal list. I even have it dialed as you had in today's video
So, my conclusion as a learning guitarist, is to go for separate pedals. I did start off with a multi effects pedal (a Sendai day hand Boss me 25) but I struggled to set it, not because if the clunky interface (well that too) but mostly because I didn't really know the sounds I was mean to be emulating. I have going it easier to learn about the way pedals change the signal by buying them one at a time.
I would go the plethora route then bite the bullet and add that moore envelope pedal along with the various drive, boost, and compressor you chose. Thank you for introducing me the plethora though! My dream "mini" board will now include it along with: - mooer enveloper - wampler ego comp - xotic ep boost - dunlop mini Timmy - mxr mini classic fuzz - tone city golden plexi

Glad to say I’m one of “the persons”. Cheers, guys!
Loved my soul food best value pedal I’ve ever had cost £40 and used for 5 years with the internal buffer on til I finally caved and upgraded for a mini tumnus and separate buffer
Definitely not a waste of 3 hours captain. I’ll end up buying something as a result but like Pete, even after the epic pedalathon, I’m still undecided.
For a low budget pedalboard I highly recommend the Mooer Soul Shiver pedal. It is a chorus, a vibrato and a rotary speaker simulation all in one little affordable pedal. As far as I know it is not a copy of anything else. It sounds good and is very versatile.
Thank you for making these videos! I've been playing guitar for years but haven't used pedals much... with your help, I will (some day) make an awesome pedal board :)
I am looking into putting together a beginners pedal board. Seems like you can’t go too far wrong with a hand full of Tone City save for a digital delay.
So cool! 😀I want to make a tone city/ehx pedalboard! Still want to see Lee and Pete do a series where they go through High Gain And Metal boot camp, and we get to see their progression and also it would be cool to have guests come on to give them tips and guidance! 😎🔥
So liberating to see affordable and small pedals come to shine.. I'm considering a killer micro pedal board for easy travelling and managing both live and studio work on the go. A little booster up front, Slide Rig Compact Deluxe compressor by Origin, overdrive + Plethora 3X. Got everything except for the Plethora. That said, I've already got the TC Pipeline Tap Tremolo, HOF2 reverb, DD-5 delay, and honestly, apart from attaching the tuner in front, this wouldn't take up so much more space. But, as you guys said, the convenience of presets and all sound tailoring that can be done up front, less hassle with cables, power supply to kepp it all juiced. Yepp, Plethora seems like a great solution.
Went through this dilemma in May and bought the Plethora X5 Which together with tone prints, my favourite overdrives (Durple, Gladio and Silverlinings) and my Boss AW3, gives me everything I want. I especially liked the flexibility of a configurable insert send & return and the connection for the expression pedal ... AND 127 different boards..!!! What's not to like.?
1:09:43 the editing in these videos is ALWAYS top freakin notch! Props to you editor person 👏 1:29:10 ahhh, so that's who does it! well, assuming he's the only one lol anyway, great job bro
my board is: TC Plethora X3, TC Ditto looper, Boss NS1 Noise Suppressor into the EVH Iconic loop AND Mini Tube Screamer out front. Super simple, and powerful!!
Really good video. Can you do a video to compare an affordable pedal board vs the Airstep Kat. It would be interesting to know if the Airstep can compete with a pedalboard. Thanks guys keep up the good work.
You guys should do a blind pedal board challenge build an affordable pedal board with Lee just switching the pedals out for each effect Pete picking up by sound alone and then see what you've come up with at the end of the challenge what affects wind up on the pedal board
The reason so many ppl overlook auto wah on their board imo is because unless you get the right pre-amp, have the right guitar, and set it all up right- they don't sound that good. They sound o.k. but- get something like the Nyle preamp/compressor which is designed for playing funk and R&B, use a strat in the second position (Neck and middle)- now turn on the auto wah- sounds amazing.
So many choices! This makes me appreciate my Boss Katana 100 even more. I have a bunch of pedals, but my board is noisy. there's a click that is annoying. Perhaps it is my cheap power supply.
Thanks to you I'm seriously thinking of replacing my mooer rumble drive by the tone city of Pete (which I love the way of playing). I feel it good and it will be perfect paired with my tone city sweet cream my mooer rat or my pink floyd MOJO hand fuzz... And why not replacing all modulation and verb pedals by only one multi fx I thought of that with a small zoom g3 but looks better with plethora... À bit long but I love the idea of many many many compared tests in only one fun video. Lokked exhausted at the end guys
You’ll be happy to know I watched the whole thing. Diehard, btw. I think you might have both been more comfortable with chairs and a table. Fantastic video though. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m staying with individual pedals for drive, but buying a multi fx for everything else.
Do anybody knows how long it takes PLETHORA to runs up? Is it really that long(about 16 seconds) like in video when Pete plugs power conector about 1:19:08 and it finishes loading 1:19:24 or am I missing something?
57:13 Pete - "I only picked it because it was blue, I didn't know what it did" lol I must admit, aesthetics play a big part in which guitars/accessories I purchase

That was some cool laidback blues at the end .
Spent the weekend building a new board nearly binned the whole thing several times, away to check out the plethora now.
Definitely not a waste of 3 hours captain. I’ll end up buying something as a result but like Pete, even after the epic pedalathon, I’m still undecided.
this is really helpful as a beginning pedal user :) i watched the whole thing
For a low budget pedalboard I highly recommend the Mooer Soul Shiver pedal. It is a chorus, a vibrato and a rotary speaker simulation all in one little affordable pedal. As far as I know it is not a copy of anything else. It sounds good and is very versatile.
Good video! Yes, Guitar Effects are expensive, so I would buy the Boss Katana for the built-in effects. Hi from USA!
Screw the pedals- what impressed me was that they could get back up after sitting like that for over an hour. Well done.
So this is the UK version of Ryans 60 Cycle Hum Affordaboard?
Thank you for making these videos! I've been playing guitar for years but haven't used pedals much... with your help, I will (some day) make an awesome pedal board :)
Couple of "light bulbs" in this one- awesome!
yes, because modern metal is not repeating itself ad nauseum.
😁
My Solution is Get it all Probably why I have 4 Boards and working on #5 👍👍🎶🎶🎸Love Those Videos Guys.
one and a half hours of 2 guys playing with pedals on the floor like kids playing with lego's on a rainy day recess
Happy trails, Hans!
Die Hard of course!
Nice reference Pete.
1:09:43 the editing in these videos is ALWAYS top freakin notch! Props to you editor person 👏
1:29:10 ahhh, so that's who does it! well, assuming he's the only one lol anyway, great job bro
my board is: TC Plethora X3, TC Ditto looper, Boss NS1 Noise Suppressor into the EVH Iconic loop AND Mini Tube Screamer out front. Super simple, and powerful!!
Nice! I have a Plethora x5, a Vox wah, big muff and EHX Soul Food, I love having the board centered around the plethora
So many OD pedals sound the same to me. I’m glad I am not alone!
That was a great video man!!! Hilarious too at the end.
I like the individual pedal style...just personal preference. I enjoy being able to put the pedals in the exact order that I prefer.
You mean just like every digital modeler / multi-effects option from Line 6, Boss, Headrush, Neural, Fractal, Mooer, NUX, Zoom, etc., lets you do?
@@zoomzoom3950 and the Plethora x5 which also allows you to split it up and put some before the amp, and some in the effects loop.
Will you test some of the recent Joyo pedals? Ive bought a couple and I really like them but never see them on your channel!
Please see my Joyo Splinter comment
Agreed! I own a Joyo Zip Amp and like it a lot. I use it as my overdrive/v light distortion kinda thing? then into my rat 🐀 and so on
ANDERTONS DONT SELL JOYO

So many choices! This makes me appreciate my Boss Katana 100 even more. I have a bunch of pedals, but my board is noisy. there's a click that is annoying. Perhaps it is my cheap power supply.
Hi guys, you should try the NUX Mini SCF Chorus/ Flanger. Under 65€ at the moment. Great tone imho. Angel Chorus has also great tone.
great as always guys! just one question, what amp/ cab are you running the pedals thorugh?
Thanks to you I'm seriously thinking of replacing my mooer rumble drive by the tone city of Pete (which I love the way of playing). I feel it good and it will be perfect paired with my tone city sweet cream my mooer rat or my pink floyd MOJO hand fuzz... And why not replacing all modulation and verb pedals by only one multi fx I thought of that with a small zoom g3 but looks better with plethora... À bit long but I love the idea of many many many compared tests in only one fun video. Lokked exhausted at the end guys
I watched to the end. Great slow tv, kind of meditation. My pulse is so low I’m worried. But I smile - I am being…
Great content! I bet Pete would've gone for Tone City pedals even blindfolded. Cheers!
You’ll be happy to know I watched the whole thing. Diehard, btw. I think you might have both been more comfortable with chairs and a table. Fantastic video though.
I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m staying with individual pedals for drive, but buying a multi fx for everything else.
Yeah. A nice and wide, low coffee table.
@@OgamiItto70 Much more comfortable.
the ending was worth the wait
Yes! Another episode of On The Floor with The Captain & Danish Pete. There is no way they can last for 90 minutes like that
When selecting effects and routing, I like to place the looper in the front of the signal chain; then I let the loop play while I experiment
Do anybody knows how long it takes PLETHORA to runs up? Is it really that long(about 16 seconds) like in video when Pete plugs power conector about 1:19:08 and it finishes loading 1:19:24 or am I missing something?
This!!!! Thank you guys.
57:13 Pete - "I only picked it because it was blue, I didn't know what it did" lol I must admit, aesthetics play a big part in which guitars/accessories I purchase
I might get that Tone City tremolo, sounds nice, it's affordable and the colour looks nice :D
36:28 Pete “my leg is sleepy. wake up” 😂😂😂
