This is absolutely the video I was looking for. We are doing our research on breeds, but one thing we realized is that we need to be honest with ourselves (as you mentioned). We love the idea of an Australian cattle dog or Australian Shepherd, but it wouldn’t be fair to them if realistically we wouldn’t be able to keep up with their high activity level needs. We have no experience with pets and all those top 10 hiking dogs videos get quite overwhelming. We get to think we found the “perfect” breed and then read more about their history and can see that they wouldn’t match our lifestyle. We will be keeping in mind what you mentioned and hopefully find a match for our family.
So glad to help! There are definitely breeds that I would love to own, but either wouldn’t be able to keep up or would be to much for me. I wish more people would realize what you have as it would go a long way to keeping dogs out of shelters ❤️
All of this! I'm a border collie owner and although she is certainly the best hiking dog i've ever had she is also the highest drive dog i've ever owned. Working and herding breeds are often a lifestyle.
Safety first of all! When I go for a long walk I need feel safe, I require from my dog natural guard and defending instinct. I would choose Malinois, German Sheperd, American Akita, Doberman, or Giant Schnauzer. My top5 favourite breeds.
I have an Australian cattle dog mix. I wanted a high energy dog to go hiking with me! And I’ve always wanted an ACD ever since seeing Mad Max 2 as a kid. Lol! She’s perfect. Luckily I did all my research on the breed first. I knew what I was getting in to.
I plan on getting a Chihuahua, and I've already decided I'll carry them most of the day. I even already have front wrap in mind so I can sometimes have my arms free. I'm watching this video though because wanna also get a medium dog too and I'm using this as research so I know how to find the right dog for what I wanna do in the future once my life is stable enough to start my adventure.
Have had excellent Lab crosses and a alaskan huskyXcoyote; They were perfect for long (unto 2 week Yukon/coastal Alaska romps, great bear team). Now more in subarctic had Great PyreneesX St. BernardX G.Shepherds (a bit lazy at times unless at night then they would be super on it. Albeit the winter nights are long here I am less hiking. Sadly having to leave my farm meant losing them too. They are well and appropriately housed. Looking for new now that I can again. Not farming so finding myself hunting, foraging and going for long romps. Rather than doing a 10 best maybe just featuring different breeds and talk about their strengths/weaknesses etc. Thanks
Hi and thanks for a very good and interrestant program👍😊, I have allways been a big fan of Rottweiler, what do you think of that choice of breed to go hiking?
I know multiple people that do herding, agility, and/or hiking with Rottweilers. They are quite athletic dogs and are very capable. It’s just important to make sure you get them from someone reputable so they have a good temperament.
It’s all about good genetics and getting a dog from a breeder that does health testing! My GSD’s ancestors for multiple generations have had their hips x-rayed as well as my own dog. OFA and PennHip are the organizations that review the x-ray images and record their findings in the U.S.
I'm building my own outlander trailer camper to go off grid. And just get away but not get away from humanity. fireside meals are always nice. I'm about ready to about ready to adopt a pup. I love Rhodesians. What do you think? I'm pondering poodles. Should I go 2? Is it better they have a sibling? So appreciate you
Have you ever met a poodle or Rhodesian in person? If not, I would try to do so before making a choice. They are both great, athletic dogs, but are a bit different. Since Rhodesians are hounds and Poodles are a hunting breed I'm guessing that training will be a bit different. Also, Poodles are going to require more grooming, but will likely be more cold tolerant. I would personally start with one dog, then maybe add a second later on. I love having two dogs, but it is twice the cost for everything (especially the vet), makes training more challenging, and its not uncommon for them to teach each other bad habits. Hope that helps!
@@TheMostImportantStep I have. Both. We've had poodles and a Jack Russel in the family. A friend has a Rodi, and you are correct they are different in mentality. Wasn't planning 2 but good advice. Especially the teaching each other bad habits. Thats funny but I can see it. Thank you!
Our dream dog is a German Shepherd. It fit very well into our lives and hiking. When we go hiking we have a dose of security when he is with us. It protects us from other animals and especially from shepherd dogs. You can check out our channel where we hike with our dog :)
I mean, while I wouldn’t buy those dogs expecting to hike the Appalachian Trail I do know some bassets that are champion trackers and I’ve seen some Bulldogs compete in agility!
What's your dream hiking dog? Is it different than your lifestyle hiking dog?
Thank you for keeping it real. For the dogs.
Parsons terrier is my choice. All the drive of a larger dog in a compact size. She is the best hiking companion I've ever had!

Nicely put! I will have to remember that phrase to use in the future!
I've got an ACD ... absolute lunatic 😁
Wouldn't trade him for the world.
A BC is in that same realm.

I've read that German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia but it must be great to find one that has healthy joints.

Also…a German Shepherd MIX is not necessarily going to inherit the common problems that a breed tends to have….

You are bad ass. I gotta buy a beer and a steak four you one these days.
All dogs except basset hounds and most bulldogs 🤣
