- LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles City Fire Department Firefighter who was seriously injured in the Wilmington explosion on February 15th was released from the Los Angeles General Medical Center this afternoon.
Firefighter Dan Goen has been discharged from the hospital and is now recovering at home. He is the last of the nine firefighters injured in the Wilmington incident a few weeks ago. The incident occurred when the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to an auto fire call in Wilmington and found a semi-truck without a trailer attached on fire. The tractor was powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) and had two 100-gallon tanks. While the firefighters were attempting to control the blaze, one of the tanks exploded with great force, immediately injuring nine firefighters. Some firefighters were thrown several feet away from their position and temporarily lost consciousness. The less injured crew members quickly came to the aid of their more severely injured colleagues. Over 150 firefighters responded to the emergency incident, ensuring public safety and managing the situation.
Firefighter Goen expressed gratitude for the thoughts, prayers, and support offered to him and the LA General Medical Burn Center medical team. Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said, “This incident serves as a reminder of the inherent dangers of the firefighting profession and the commitment your LAFD members have to place the safety of the public before their own.” Since the incident, Chief Crowley has met with all the injured members and is pleased to report that they are all recovering well. She commends the LAFD firefighters for their heroic spirit and passion for serving the community.
Firefighter Goen is anxious to be home and spend quality time with his two daughters and wife.
