If you add an extra half an inch to the exterior fabric for the top of the bag then the fabric will be able to fold over the top of the foam and into the bag. It helps make the color change not so noticeable. Thanks for the great tutorial
I really like the idea of leaving the lining bottom unstitched to make flipping the sleeve around easier! I had seen other tutorials and that step bothered me because it looked difficult. Never occurred to me *not* to do it like this. I also love the quilt idea (book sleeves do remind me of a quilted bag/pouch). It's also interesting that most of the videos I saw all had an inner cloth lining. My cousin gave me one of these as a gift (from one of the more popular brands) and they didn't have an inner lining. Just a sort of soft mesh of the fusible backing, I think. Thanks for this great tutorial!
Just finished making one using this tutorial. such good instructions and clear on what to do. mine turned out incredible and fits the book i measured against perfectly. thank you!
Thank you, I'm a beginner sewing and loved you tutorial. So easy to follow your instructions. Beautiful book sleeve. What sewing machine do you use and would you recommend it. 😊
I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I’ve had a few and the best learner one I’ve used is a brother. They are inexpensive and easy to learn on. I have a juki now. But there’s a lot of good brands I haven’t gotten to try.
Awesome job! I was just thinking of buying 1 the other day & thought they can't be that difficult to make. Thank you so much for showing how you did this! Now I have a wkend project.
Beautiful book sleeve! I find your instructions very helpful. My mom bought me a sewing machine for my birthday so I’m excited to try making a book sleeve for myself
Great book sleeve😁 I like the yellow showing on the top it gives it like a accent to the sleeve it looks prettier. Not so plain Jane.😁😄 I going to make one for my tablet with the inside top showing add snap closure. ❤🥰
I heard on a video on RUclips when you use a book cover and you take your book out with you it gives you privacy so no one can see what your reading. I never thought of that. I want to learn how to use my sewing machine this year. This would be a great beginner project. I have this exact fabric. Thank you for the video!
Thank you for giving me hope I can try to do this too lol love the fabric and the cat 🐈 added bonus 😊 btw for a beginner wich sewing machine would you recommend, I have one but don't deserve it nor have the skill level to properly use it lol darn that Amazon lightening deal 😉 😜
A.L.O.E. (A little of everything) 🥰 I’m getting frustrated with mine I can’t seem to make the foam stick to the fabric even after ironing it for ages! And then I pull it through it comes away from the fabric, and I can’t seem to sew my top stitch straight with this foam it’s all so hard to manoeuvre whilst sewing with the foam I find :(
Thank you for the tutorial! There are no shops here in Chile that sell book sleeves (maybe I'll change that 🤔), but now I'm gonna make my own book sleeve so I can carry my books safely 😍 not many options for fabric here either, but I'm sure I'll find something that'll work. Thanks so much!
Does Etsy ship to you?? That’s where I get most of my fabric because we don’t have much for fabric here either. But I’m so glad that you liked the tutorial.
Thanks for the video! it's really clear! .. I've a question tho, why not sew all the 6 sides together before flipping them on the outside?(instead of sewing only the insides together and only the ousides together), wouldn't that be easier when it comes to the flipping? (and not have all the mess and the crumble on the inside?)
Idk why things like this need to be sewn in this way, but they do. I tried to sew all the pieces together in a bag I did once and totally messed it up.
This is a wonderfully thorough and informational video. You've done a great job explaining and showing how to make a book sleeve. I have a couple of questions- Your tutorial shows your needle going through the foam perfectly even with the adhesive. I was wondering what kind of needle you're using. Is it just a standard needle? Did you find that the fusing gummed up your needle? Thanks so much for sharing!
I’m pretty sure you could. But I would use 2 longer pieces of fabric instead of 4 smaller pieces. And leave a little space between the pieces of stabilizer. And just fold the edges you’re gluing I’m so there aren’t any raw edges. I’ve never tried bu I can see how it would work. If you try let me know.
Help how do i attach a zipper to the top of the book sleeve? Do I do that before putting the front fabric and lining together or do I put that on after?
Have you thought of just adding a loop at the center back and a button on the front. No need to put a zipper in a book sleeve. A totally different technique if you want to add a zipper.
The one I use is the Bosal In-R-Form plus. It’s the double sided fusible foam stabilizer. It doesn’t have a thickness but from what I can find it’s the only thickness of this kind. I hope that helps.
All you need to do is measure the book you want to make a sleeve for (don’t forget the thickness) and make sure you add at least an inch for the sewing allowance.
Can someone help me understand what size fabric and foam to cut out if I want to make a sleeve with a finished size of 9.25 Height x 7.5 Width and a Depth of 2 inches. I want to make a sleeve for my half binder that I use as a planner. With a depth of two inches, I don't think the flat bottom would work and I need to make mine have a box bottom but don't know how to change the measurements. Thanks!
@@ALOEAlittleofeverything That's interesting. Can you give more detail on how you figured those numbers out I'd like to be able to do it on my own thank you so much.
When I add out my sizes I take all the dimensions of the book/object. Then I make sure each piece has all the all the sizes... so yours is 9.25X7.5X2 that 2 is really important. You need to make sure all the pieces have that 2 in there (sometimes I’ll add a little extra if I don’t want it snug) if you want it to have a boxed bottom add extra because the boxed bottoms take a little extra (so like and extra inch for the bottom, but I don’t box bottoms very often)... then you need an inch extra on all the pieces so you can have a half inch seam allowance. I’ve forgotten to leave the seam allowance and had it just a tiny bit too small. Does that make any sense?? I took your 9.25 and added 3 inches (2 for the depth and 1 for the seam) so I got 12.25.... if you want to box them I would add an extra inch or so here. I did the same for the 7.5, add 3 inches and you get 12.25x10.5. I usually give myself a little extra room because I don’t like mine too snug.
Please help me out. If your Dutch and reading this. What is foam stabilizer in Dutch? Where can I buy it. I've searched for hours and the only thing close to it I found it foam rubber. I really want to make a book sleeve but I don't know what this stuff is called in Dutch so I can go out and buy it.
Um I definitely came here to sew book covers, but I live for the fact you picked A Court of Mist and Fury as your guide for making it.
I would love to see more sewing tutorials this was so great and well explained thank you!
Anything you want to see??

Dayna Faw Would you make the inside fabric half an inch shorter too?

Thanks for the tutorial. It looks excellent
Hello thank you for showing and explaining. I was wondering what type of material you recommend
I use quilters cotton fabric. It works best for me.
Thank you for this! I know how to quilt but bags have always been a mystery! My daughter and i just spit out 2 in an hour.
This is brilliant and so helpful!! Thank you!! 😍
Thank you. 🥰

So so pretty! Great job! I love it!

Great video. As for the bosal foam, do you have a problem with wrinkles even after ironing finished project? Just curious.
No i havent had any issues with wrinkling.

Idk why things like this need to be sewn in this way, but they do. I tried to sew all the pieces together in a bag I did once and totally messed it up.
It’s sewn this way so all the seams are hidden. There are easier ways, but the seams will be exposed( inside the sleeve).
Awesome video! I love it!!!
Did you ever get your photography back? ❤
No. Lol
I love that book. Imma have to make one of these!
Perfect can’t wait to try

I just use the basic all purpose needle. I can never remember the sizes. But it’s the mid level quilting one.
@@ALOEAlittleofeverything Good to know! Thanks for the info :)
Ok I can’t sow or own a sowing machine was wondering could I use the fabric stabilizing and use fabric glue to make a book one?
I’m pretty sure you could. But I would use 2 longer pieces of fabric instead of 4 smaller pieces. And leave a little space between the pieces of stabilizer. And just fold the edges you’re gluing I’m so there aren’t any raw edges. I’ve never tried bu I can see how it would work. If you try let me know.
I love it thanks for doing this video for me
Thank you for sharing
Hello can you please again say what fabric you used? Is that cotton?
Yes. I use quilting fabric. The kind you can get at a craft store, like joannes or hobby lobby
Thanks!
Hi! What kind of sewing machine can you recommend in sewing foam like this? Thank you.
I have a brother. But I know that any decent machine can sew through it.
Does it have to be a heavy duty one or basic brother sewing machines will do?
I have a basic brother. So I’m assuming and basic machine will do fine.
Great! Thank you 😊

Have you thought of just adding a loop at the center back and a button on the front. No need to put a zipper in a book sleeve. A totally different technique if you want to add a zipper.
Thank you for this video! I’m new to sewing, can you make a video for cutting or proper ways on cutting? Thank you so much 😁
I sure can. I will add a section for cutting into the next one :-)
HI! What do you recommend for a seam allowance on this?
I try to stick to half an inch.
Great tutorial!!! Thank you!
Thank you for watching.
Well I'm impressed! Bravo! And the fabric is beautiful - did you get it online or from a local store?
Oh I just saw the description! Good job!🤗
I heard you can get it at michaels. I just live on an island with very little options. So Etsy was just easier.
I live in a Greek village so the options aren't that many for me, too - etsy seems like a good idea
Can you please tell what is the thickness of foam stabilizer?
The one I use is the Bosal In-R-Form plus. It’s the double sided fusible foam stabilizer. It doesn’t have a thickness but from what I can find it’s the only thickness of this kind. I hope that helps.
Cool
How about the small books too
All you need to do is measure the book you want to make a sleeve for (don’t forget the thickness) and make sure you add at least an inch for the sewing allowance.
Can I still do this even if I don’t have a sewing machine?
Yes. It’ll just take longer.
Can someone help me understand what size fabric and foam to cut out if I want to make a sleeve with a finished size of 9.25 Height x 7.5 Width and a Depth of 2 inches. I added the dimensions of the book, plus the depth and add an extra inch for the sewing allowance. So I would guess that 12.25X10.5
@@ALOEAlittleofeverything That's interesting. Can you give more detail on how you figured those numbers out I'd like to be able to do it on my own thank you so much.

how would i do something similar but with an flap on top?
I’ve never done anything with a flap. I would assume that you just add extra fabric for it. I would have to play around to know though.

I really don’t know. Do you have a quilting shop you can ask?? Most quilting and craft stores that have fabric should have it.
@@ALOEAlittleofeverything I managed to buy it from the German Amazon store. So it's all okay. Now looking for fun prints :D
@@ALOEAlittleofeverything I made one. I wish I could show you! ❤ It's a simple version. I'm gonna make cutters version when I get my fabric.
For the width, why not wrap your tape measure around?
Idk. I had to make is more difficult on myself. Lol
Hellooo❤🎉I would like to ask if you would make blank book sleeves for sublimation for me? Please🎀🦋for a fee.
Can you give me the measurements? :)
All the pieces were 9X12.5

You should sell them!
Am i the only one who is suffuring to sewing the two layers of foam step by machine? I did everything for nothing 💔
Im so sorry. It took me a bit to get used to sewing things like bags and my first few came out completely wrong
I also have used fusible fleece
Wow you could have handled the cat a little more gently!
