How to tap 80/20 10 Series extruded aluminum

- Are you building a camper van or working on another engineering project using 80/20 10 Series extruded aluminum and want to use hidden end fasteners? Here is how to use a hand tap to add a 1/4 20 thread into the end of your 80/20 10 Series extruded aluminum.
You can also clamp your aluminum to your workbench for tapping. If you have soft pad clamps (like Irwin brand) you may not need to protect your aluminum. If you have a metal bench clamp, use a couple scraps of cardboard or cloth between the clamp and your aluminum to protect it from scratches.

Clamp it so you can get started straighter, by using two hands, and lube it; it's not just heat that you're trying to mitigate.
Sure, a drop of automatic trans fluid would work great, but then all your metal flakes won't come out as they will be held in by the liquid. Suggestions on that aspect?
So I messed up the threads at the end of some extrusion 10 series (1/4 20) forcing a screw in a weird way/ Do think this tool could fix it or is that piece is ruined
Do you have a tap tool? That might save it, plus the depth of your bolt might make a difference too, but lack of threading could impact its strength.
@@VanTransitions Thank you, no I don't own the tool and wanted to be sure. It's only the 1" hex bolt that joins 1" extrusion and it's just a horizontal cross piece, not much is asked of it. I have wood panels on either side of it so have to use the internal fasterner
Try self tapping screws. Even normal screws can be used without preparation in aluminium, but it is not as easy.
It is fast (when you use an electric screwdriver), and there is no dirt at all.
You just have to check the the screw and use a normal steel nut if there is aluminum on the threads.
Interesting idea. I cannot imagine no aluminum dust even with self tapping when you back them out. I'm happy with the threads from my tap tool.

Not sure. When looking at 80/20 brand website, 10 series end fasteners can be 1/4-20, M6, or 12-24 (self tapping).
I thought the 10 series used 10-32 UNC threads for the center hole. and the 20 series used the 1/4"-20.
1/4-20 works great. Searching the 8020 website shows there are several t-nut size options for 10 series. As far as tapping the end, I would consult them for other compatible tap options. To note: 10 series is fractional (1 inch) while 20 series is metric (20 mm).
8020.net says 10 series tap on the ends is 1/4-20 or M6 x 1.0
Perfect now just need to find caster wheels that fit that thread. Do you think casters #2298 on the online catalog would fit in that thread?
