- Mike Matei reviews Final Fantasy II for SNES! More commonly known worldwide as Final Fantasy IV. This was one of my absolute favorite games on the Super Nintendo as a teenager. Read Mike’s Blog ✜ www.mikematei.blog
Note: Sorry I made an error about Tellah in this video. I got mixed up with what happens. Later on I believe you use Rydia to cast Meteor #retro #retrogaming #nes #snes #jamesrolfe #mikematei #atari #playthrough #gameplay #gamereview Игры
This is my favourite game of all times!
This man knows.
It's my favorite too.
Sad.
Yes.
You had to be there.
"With the development of Final Fantasy III drawing to a close..." shows a picture of the US Box art for Final Fantasy VI. You're not helping with the confusion there Mike..
The 16 bit generation was the best
It had the best rpgs of all time. Id argue even to this day many of them have more gameplay and variety then most games today. Micro transactions and DLC have changed modern gaming a lot for better or worst is up to each person. Graphics are a lot better
@Timothy Shawn If you think about what final fantasy means and stands for this game I feel perfectly captures it. Modern ones are nothing like it anymore its not even final fantasy today
I still can't listen to the Red Wings theme without getting pumped up.
ACHOO!
The Rogue Wolf yeah!
"Justice and retribution are but trifling things. There are victories of greater worth. Someday you will know them. Go forth now, Cecil. Your virtue is proven. I will instill you now with the hallowed light, formed of my very soul. May it be your strength, though it be the last of mine."
Gesundheit
Ooh my God there people like me out there!!?
rouge wolf, *hits with frying pan* WAKE UP!!
Different classes wouldn't make sense in the story. Cecil was the dark knight who had to work to become a Paladin. Kain is a proud Dragoon and wouldn't make sense for him to be anything else. Edge is part of a proud ninja nation. Their classes are the story itself. Its one of the reason I enjoyed IV over V.
RaineTCG he become a holy dragoon
Yeah the characters had so much depth!
M7
this game doesn't get close to the love and appreciation it deserves!!.. people tend to skip past this to FF3 and Chrono Trigger. I love this game. Thank Mike!
FF3 and this game are great. FF7 is overrated.
if you mean the american ff3 then that´s actually ff6.
obv im referring to the american ones
The very thing that eventually falls off peoples lips. I never bothered with VII. As with the later ones, there is just no attachment.
@@CanadaBud23 7 and 9 are pretty good, you were a fan of the older ones or are into a more mechanized setting for 7 you should still enjoy it
I played this game so much as a kid. I've beaten it dozens of times. This was back in a time when i only had a handful of games and playing something over and over again wasn't uncommon. This game was a classic and it holds a lot of nostalgia for me.
I remember my first time stealing Mysidia's crystals. :) Then my parents called me down for dinner and it was the first time I yelled back "Not now MOM!"
Dimitri Nakos you little rebel, you
My mom would have beat me
technarave I used to want to get beat and they took that away as a pretty punishment
love that story! miss being a kid sometimes.
Tellah cannot use meteor as it takes 99MP and he never gains more than the 90 he starts with. It is a plot point that he can't use it.
Yeah, he converts all his remaing HP into MP in order to cast it.
Except for the remakes, where you can use a Soma Drop on him so he could use it.
Then Rydhia learns it. And a few levels later she learns Ultima.
The Gaming Corner Yeah, a lot of gameplay mechanics are used to show character traits in this game.
Rydia never learns Ultima. There's no Ultima in FFIV except for Cecil and Rosa's Ultima on the DS version from the twincast augment.
besides FF7 this one was my favorite. I remember when my friend got it new when I was a kid. we stayed up for 19 hours straight playing it and were blown away by the music and the story line made us both fall in love with RPG's
I like this reading cadence and natural voice. Fits Mike.
This is my favorite game in the franchise
Waste of plastic and electricity.
Randomark3087 As is mine, spent 130 hours in the gba version, just liked the story. Mainly the characters and storyline..They were all relatable to me in some form even the ones I didn't like.
me also, such memorys
I must agree, I really like FF IV. But my favorite is Final Fantasy 6.
One of my favorite games in the FF franchise too. Sometimes, I do think FF4 to be my favorite FF game and I still have fun with it to this day. It has a nice charm to it.
This might actually be my favorite game of all time. So many great memories attached to this. Love this video, more like these Mike! Great work
By far my favorite FF!!! The characters, the music, the story! this could make a movie easily!
When the twins sacrificed themselves 😭.
L Vaz
I'll never forget that. I won't even lie. It about made me cry.
T.T
that is actually loosely adapted from japanese folklore
Just got to that freaking part, their sacrifice was really sudden!
vcwchen is there a link? I’d like to read it
you finished the game? Tellah never uses meteor except once, and everyone knows what happens because of it. There is another character that can use it without repercutions that comes after him, But tellah cannot use Meteor , atleast you cannot control when can he use it
He was probably going on memory there.
TECHNICALLY there are three characters besides Tellah that can use Meteo, though. Actually four if you want to count Golbez. Rydia, Palom and FuSoYa all are able to use Meteo, though in Palom's case you'd have to grind a very stupid amount of time and unless you're playing on the GBA version it would be worthless since you lose him eventually anyway
good on GBA where you can choose the end party and even new game +
@Jerry Smith No, Tellah doesn't pass any stats to anyone when he dies.
FF2 (Excuse me FOUR!!!!) was an awesome game! I had it in 1991 and still do!
If you like FF2 I suggest watching another video. This is a review for Final Fantasy IV.
This game is called Final Fantasy 2 in North America
Brian Paglia only kids call it 4 because they never lived through the struggle of old school localization
Only the Western release of the game on the SNES was called FF2, that doesn't make it any less incorrect to continue calling this game FF2 when FF2 is in actuality an entirely different game. Calling it FF2 is a localization mistake due to FF2 and FF3 not being localized in time for a release in North America, leaving them to make the decision to skip 2 and 3 entirely in favor of just going straight to FF4 on the at-the-time brand new SNES. The localizers called it FF2 as to not confuse their western audience, as people would probably ask WTF happened to FF2 and FF3. Real shitty on the localizers for this decision, which has had the exact opposite effect of what was originally desired and has instead caused a lot of confusion ever since (it also seemed to be more or less a common practice at the time, making not just Final Fantasy but many Japanese games a victim of these shitty localizations). This game was released in a time before the internet, so frankly nobody knew any better. We know better now.
WackySwacky fine fine. I’m just following Mike who says 2 at the start and has the 2 box as the thumbnail. I’d go on but I’m out of data anyway.
Great review, Mike! FF4 is awesome...
*sees Rosa in front row multiple times*
WHAT?!
He is yet to grasp the basic RPG settings, fighters in front with mage/archer in back
Okay who the fuck puts the mages in the front?
Too much of a hassle to change the rows XD. They leave and go in this game haha
Isn't "Davids star" its a hexagram which is in the Shinto religion(forget its exact meaning)
Can you provide a reference to this? I couldn't find it searching in Japanese. I did find it referred to as a symbol of Judaism.
Thank you so much for this review, I was 11 when this came out. It completely blew my mind and changed everything for the upcoming teenage years that were ahead of me. I adore everything about this game. Timeless masterpiece that has a very special place in my heart.
Do more final fantasy mike.
Finally, a jrpg. Please do more of these.
Watching my dad play this game in the early 90's is what got me into playing video games.
Good review, but I honestly wish you'd use the original SNES-score if all the footage was going to be from that version. Talking about the music and using the remastered soundtrack was a mismatch for me, personally.
Yeah, showing video footage from the original cartridge but then using a music rendition clearly not from that cartridge as an illustration struck me as rather odd as well.
hopefully he sees this so he can evolve like we all should
you finally found a style that really fits you Mike! Enjoying the new videos
He's been doing stuff like this for years
Colesykins no he used to get side tracked now he's learned how to stay on topic or just did what he usually does but in these videos just edited out the rambling
Finally Mike is listening to the people and giving them what they want.
Serious scripted reviews. he's been doing far too many Let's Plays and unscripted reviews.
This games music mmmm good stuff.
This is one of the greatest games ever made
Sweet intro slide, and well put-together video, I enjoy these a lot.
Why did you take Edward's harp away and have him punching stuff lol?
Ah man, I still have my SNES copy of this game that I bought from Babbage's after Christmas in 1991. =)
Being a little kid, and playing FF2 and 3, was such a special moment of imagination and wonderment. I never played any of the later ones, but looking back on those fondly as some of the most immersive narrative experiences I've ever had in my life.
I think this one has the best story line.
That screenshot was not from the PS1 version.
Which one was it? (I haven't played Final Fantasy II (IV) yet. I'm in Final Fantasy VII right now.)
I don't know what version it is, but it's from the PS1.
It looks like it could be from the PSP or mobile versions.
I have the PS1 version and I can confirm this. I think he used the pic from the mobile version by accident.
FF IV and VI are so great. I wish we could get more like them.
My favorite RPG. The music, mechanics, and lovable cast of characters make it a timeless classic.
One of my FF's Favorite :) love it
One of my all time favorites. It was like watching a movie with a fantastic story.
Thanks for introducing me to FF4! I missed out on this one, but it looks like an awesome game. BTW: Could you do a review of FF6? That was my introduction to the series, and is still my favorite FF game to this day.
FrankenXANA going to replay 6 on my she's classic.
Got one for my best friend for Christmas. He is layed off and is living it.
Tellah cant use meteor on enemies lol. He can only cast it once in a certain spot in the game Q.Q
I remember buying this game when it came out and played it NONSTOP for years... I actually leveled up to 99 in the crystal palace on the moon just because lol. Huge replay value with so many hidden places in the world. Amazing for it's time.
My favorite FF. Can still hear the moon theme leading up to the final battle
Woah! Cool new intro!!!!!! 😍
I can’t even explain how close this game is to my heart. I stumbled upon it at just the right time in my youth. Hearing the music after all these years evokes within me feeling like nothing else.
Great review! Easily one of my fav FF's.
Absolutely. The most memorable game i've ever played. The story line the character development as well as the timing this was released made this game the best. And also the music was unbelievable.
I just got ff2 snes for Xmas :D
Golbez's redemption is the one things that have stuck with me for as long as I can remember.
my all time favorite game. still playing it and getting items ive never gotten almost 30 years later
Final Fantasy 4 is my favorite game in the series. The characters and the story really are amazing. I've played all the versions, and I prefer the PSP version because of the auto-battle system drastically speeding up the game, making random encounters go by in just a few seconds.
Great review, Mike!
The reason why the game was called FFII in the US is not correct.
He gets the reason technically right, but he doesn't explain it very clearly, and the imagery on screen while he talks about it is a hot mess of fail. He refers to the Japanese Final Fantasy III for Famicom, but is seemingly oblivious that he's showing the box for the western SNES release of Final Fantasy VI, which was just *called* "Final Fantasy III" at the time. Then he goes on to talk about the localization changes between Final Fantasy IV's Japanese and English versions, but shows screenshots of actual Final Fantasy II for Famicom.
As for what would become FFIV and FFV originally starting development simultaneously, I can't speak to that with any authority, but I've *never* heard even a rumour of that before. I don't know where he got that information, or if it's remotely accurate.
I can tell he isn’t a huge squaresoft or final fantasy nerd like some of us but regardless great video
He got many things wrong in that review. I don't think he even played it...
Best childhood game ever! Still remember and love how you can use the items duplication cheat.. haha
Id love to see a long Lets Play of Final Fantasy 1 as its the shortest by James and also Mike there to pass the controller to as you both share playing parts of the game
This is my favorite game of the Final Fantasy series. I love it more than 7. I understand if it is not everyone's favorite. Still, what a fucking awesome game. Looking forward to Mike's review
The ultimate masterpiece. Best Final Fantasy game ever, and best Square game ever
Chrono Trigger: Hold my beer
J Bird Xenogears: Hold My Beer
its wonderful game, but far from being the best square ever created, thats spot chrono trigger, vagrant story, xenogears are competing for.
Gosh, not agreeing with me sure seems like a you-problem :)
SwitchBladeCrisis420 if you're talking about the true japanese ffii, JUST DON'T
Love how professional the reviews have been Mike!
One of my favorite and nostalgic games of all time! Thanks for this review!
My favorite JRPG. I've completed the game more than a dozen times. It's been a few years - starting a new game tonight!
Please keep these up...review alot more SNES/Genesis and n64/ps1 games, im sure alot of people will love it. Very insightful
yes, please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only FF I ever completed. It was so good I played through it again straight after. Great game.
I love listing to the older final fantasy ost when I’m playing 15 since that’s a feature
Censored ?! You spoony bard !
Rofl that was one of the funniest insults from tellah .
Hah! Glad to know other people fanboyed at cecil becoming a paladin.
Final Fantasy VII is my favorite but this game comes close. So many memories...
In the us version Tellahs hp topped at 90, with meteor being 99 to use. It only exists for story during that time. Rydia gets meteor eventually and its usable however.
This was my very first real rpg (excluding the original Zelda for nes). I remember playing this when I was six, I was originally too young to play so my sister played it first and we used to stay up all night and I would watch her play. I fell in love with this game and played it myself shortly after her play through. It was the game that made me fall in love with the final fantasy series and rpg’s in general. It has always been my favorite rpg ever and I’ve probably played it to completion about 50 times lol so glad you did this review. So many people give this game shit and I never understood why. This game is an ultimate classic!!!
ZELDA IS NOT AN RPG
Normally I would agree, but technically it is classified as an action rpg. That’s why I stated it as much.
Smokey McJoint Zelda II was more of an action RPG. You got experience points and leveled up as in traditional RPGs, but the combat was in real-time.
I would think about playing this game when I was at school a lot. Secret of mana too.
Kain was the best !
He is indeed the best.
Yes
Really enjoying your reviews Mike, keep it up!
Great review, but I'm curious.
Why are your fighters in the back row? They deal less damage and are more equipped to take more damage?
yes... some of the footage was a mess, and Mike seemed to miss a lot. Did you notice that the twins were also fighting with fists? Odd right?
I really like what you've done with these reviews, exceptionally produced! FFIV was what really got me more deeply into RPGs, even if FFVI is ultimately my favorite of all time.
Positron um, how do the kids say it, “same”.
👍
Positron - Couldn't agree with you more there!
ff6 is the best for sure
Oh Anna...
Nice! I`m glad to see mike doing a review on here! I`m not sure if hes done more... But I hope he does in the future!
Awesome! Simply Awesome Mike Informative and Memorable, keep it up.
Though I do have one thing that comes to mind here actually. As I recall in the original, you said here that Tella could use Meteor later on. I'm fairly sure he wasn't able to use Meteor, he never gains more than 90 MP and Meteor was more MP than that. There is probably some sort of workaround for that in the game or newer versions but I've never really thought of that.
One of my personal favorites, only being dwarfed by Final Fantasy 6
Terra will always be the best FF protagonist.
Hope to see a FF6 review!
Using Celtic Moon at the end... nice
25 years later the Four Fiends boss rush is still one of my favorite moments in any RPG ever.
Hey Mike Matei, You’re fucking awesome.
Killer Kombat
He also has a king schlong
To be more clear this is Final Fantasy IV Easy Type in Japan. At the time there were two Final Fantasy IVs in Japan, Easy Type and Hard Type, which we did not get in the US until Final Fantasy Chronicles on the PS1. In Hard type the entire enemy party attackes after a party member attacks. There are ither differences between the games, but I don't remember them at the moment.
Other. :/
There are more unique abilities (such as Cecil's "Dark" ability that does damage at the expense of HP) in "Hard Type."
Not true, Final Fantasy IV (Jp), Final Fantasy II (US) and Final Fantasy IV: Easy Type (Jp) are all 3 unique versions. Easy Type is actually the most unique of the 3.
I just started playing this game on gameboy advance. This video was posted one hour after I started it again. Good timing Mike!
Nice to have a classic review out Mike! Hope to hear more of your final fantasy opinions!
I am really enjoying these game reviews mike, keep it up.
do anything final fantasy
Love to see you do a review of Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
One of my Snes badges is I was able to get a pink tail without the alarm item which wasn't available in the original ff2 for the SNES it took so long!
I don't understand how Mike can like any RPG. Whenever he's playing a game with dialog he just wants to skip it as fast as possible.
I really hate that people STILL feel the need to say (FF2 in the US) I mean come on lol.
Thank you, Mike. I knew you guys would eventually give a nod to the RPG genre, which is one of my all-time favorite gaming genres (I'm all the rage about Metroid nowadays, though- yep, a late-comer I am). BTW, as far as characters and their personalities, I've gotta say, Kain is my absolute favorite FF character- I mean, he's so fallible (therefore believable) and his motives are so real and compelling. One of the greatest, for sure.
Does someone know where I can get that version of th overwhorld theme that is playing on the background?
Back when Final Fantasy main characters were heroes, rather than emo sissies.
Are you talking about cloud and squall?
My favorite Final Fantasy, for sure. However I have to say I loved the GameBoy Advance version.... until the final boss fight. Cecil's line when he faces Zemus.... ugh. That one change in his dialogue killed the experience for me. I'll stick with the Playstation (one) version.
what did he say?
Dwoprus
Have you tried the PSP version.
psx version: Zeromus......For all life and for those who gave their lives we will not lose
gba version: Zeromus! I can't lose ! I...Just....Can't !
ds version (voiced cutscene):Zeromus.....This is the end for you, not us!
psp version: Zeromus ! I can't lose,.............. I can't
snes version: Zeromus ! For all those living on the earth.....I will destroy you !
weird if you ask me the most powerful is certainly the psx version but it has not much meaning if you think about it, almost no one gave their lives to defeat zeromus, atleast no one that cecil actually knows, imo the best is the ds version but thats only because of the voice acting and Cecil is yuri lowenthal so thats amazing.
To this day I still sit down and ask myself: "How the heck did I manage to kill Zeromus in the DS version...?"
you were probably not a noob and didnt run away from enemies ? he's not hard, unless you talk about the hard mode cuz that actually has some challenge, unless you grind a lot.
mike great review. im still seeking out the pink puff for the adment armour. after like 22 years.
Thanks for these regular type of reviews, Mike :) I absolutely LOVE AVGN and that series has stayed with me for many years now, but it's also great seeing you doing your own reviews (even if it's just the most basic type of review there is it's still very enjoyable and in fact interesting!) So you do you, Mike, and have a good one ;)
let james know we all think hes awesome. and so are you Mike. you two RULE! and this game is awesome. :)
Best Final Fantasy game
Huh? This isn't a FF VI review.
This is my favourite Final Fantasy. It had such a profound impact on my life. The soundtrack is a masterpiece. I listen to it all the time. This game really does it for me. It's nostalgia overload. I would also agree that the PSP version is the definitive edition. It cleans up a lot of the functions and translation issues. It also stays true to the art, while giving it a more polished look. In addition to that, it includes the complete story* and enables you to use either the original soundtrack or the remixed soundtrack.
Y dont u have the harp equipped with edward??
it made me, a 25 year old man, almost cry just wishing i could go back in time and play it again
Josh Owens
Play it on an emulator
i know, but its not the same as having the actual controller and console literally sitting right in front of you
Josh Owens play with a controller on PC. Problem solved.
I have it on my damn phone.
GuitarGuy057 Just want to add to this, 8bitdo sells Bluetooth snes controllers for about 30$ which you can use to play games on your phone. I own one and it's very convenient and gives you that same feeling of the original controller.
It’s not chrono trigger, but still a damn good game 👍
Which is why the PlayStation version is still the best. Two incredible games in one package. Honestly Chrono Trigger is the only game I proudly admit to having bought 4 times.
MasterStryfe You may not enjoy it, and neither do I, but it is absolutely not overrated. It's a nearly perfectly crafted RPG for it's era.
Compared to snes era maybe but almost any ff after beats chrono no question ff 7 to 10 where more than masterpieces
Many SNES RPGs are masterpieces. Chrono Trigger is one of them. There is also FFVI and EarthBound.
Secret of Mana > Chrono Trigger
What a timing Mike! I just beat this game for the first time , some days ago. Played the recommended PSP version :)
I also heard the GBA version has a new game + feature that allows you to get members old skills back like Rydia's white magic and Cecil's dark sword strike
