Shiva Purana- Vidyeśvara-saṃhitā | Chapter 8 - Śiva’s forgiveness of Brahmā

From the brows of mighty Shiva, Bhairava did rise,
A fearsome being of dark power, born from divine eyes.
Kneeling on the battlefield, with a voice like thunder's call,
"O Lord, command me swiftly; I shall conquer all."
Shiva spoke with thunderous might, pointing towards the foe,
"Here stands Brahmā, the first of gods, whose pride now overflows.
Take your sharp and swift-moving sword, and with one decisive blow,
Strike down the head of arrogance, let the falsehood go."
Bhairava, with a grip of steel, seized Brahmā’s tufted crown,
His sword aloft, ready to strike, to cast the falsehood down.
Brahmā trembled like a leaf, caught in a storm’s fierce gale,
His garlands torn, his robes askew, his regal visage pale.
At Bhairava’s feet he fell, a god brought low by fear,
His pride and might now shattered, as death’s shadow neared.
Yet Vishnu, moved by mercy’s plea, shed tears like sacred rain,
With folded hands he begged the Lord, "Forgive this god’s first stain."
"O Lord of Lords, you gave him life, and five heads as his sign,
Let not this first transgression end in loss so unkind.
Grant him your boundless mercy, for this one misdeed,
And let the universe know your grace in this crucial hour of need."
Shiva’s wrath began to cool, his heart by Vishnu swayed,
He nodded once to Bhairava, and the sword was stayed.
Turning to the humbled god, who bowed before his might,
"O Brahmā, know your place and keep justice in your sight."
"No temple shall honor you, no festival in your name,
For your deceit and arrogance have brought you only shame.
But you shall still preside, where rituals are done,
In every sacred sacrifice, your role shall not be shunned."
Then Shiva turned his gaze, to the Ketaka flower near,
"O flower, deceitful and roguish, you too shall not appear.
No longer shall you grace my worship, nor adorn my sacred head,
Your birth shall find its purpose where lesser feet may tread."
The Ketaka, in humble tone, pleaded at Shiva’s feet,
"Spare me from this fate, O Lord, make my life complete.
Let my presence be of worth, in your sight and in your grace,
Forgive this single misstep, let me find my place."
Shiva spoke with softened heart, though his words remained firm,
"My followers shall wear you, to them you shall affirm,
Your birth was not in vain, though my worship you may miss,
You’ll find a place in canopies, over idols you’ll persist."
And thus the Lord of all, with mercy and with might,
Forgave the gods and flower, bringing all to light.
The Devas sang his praises, their voices filled the sky,
As Shiva shone in glory, his justice pure and high.
