While convalescing in a wheelchair after being pushed from the stage in London just 4 months earlier, Frank put together a 20-piece orchestra and recorded this album along with the great Waka/Jawaka album. 9 months to the date after the violent incident, he mounted a very brief tour with that orchestra and a month later, pared that down to a 10-piece band and continued touring. Most any other "pop star" would be taking fistfuls of painkillers and staring off into space. Frank got right back to work.
Since you appreciate Frank so much I'll share this with you. My first Zappa concert late 1971 THIS GROUP (I was in 9th grade!!!) - The Grand Wazoo a twenty some odd piece jazz band. This was the very early star of his mid period. I got to see through various concerts, material from this album, Overnight Sensation, Apostrophe, One Size Fits All played with George Duke, Napolean Murphy Brock Chester Thompson, Ruth Underwood, Ralph Humphries, Terry Bozzio, Adrian Belew. I was very fortunate! For me his mid period was his creative sweet spot. Please check out the early Mothers albums like "We're Only In It For The Money", "Uncle Meat" "Lumpy Gravy" you'll be glad!
I first discovered Frank's music when I was a boy of fifteen, and that was with the album HOTRATS, now I'm going on sixty eight and I still listen to his music. But I can't say that I love everything that he's done, but one thing's for sure is, he certainly was a musical genius, and yeah, that tune is smooth jazz at it's finest
A gorgeous Frank instrumental. The title is in reference to the feeling of relief he had when he could finally stop taking painkillers after being attacked on stage and nearly killed. A little booboo at the beginning, though. You said it was his 8th album but it's actually his 16th. 😊
Well, really 15th. Mothermania is a compilation album... Frank's most mellow instrumental. It's the kind of Frank music that you could play for somebody predisposed against Zappa and they'll enjoy it. When they ask, "Who is this, this is nice?" You tell that person it's Frank Zappa and they look at you with a scowl because you tricked them.
@@erikahlander3489 Sleep dirt is a beautiful acoustic guitar duo, and not very readily identifiable as our Uncle Frank, so it does fit nicely into it that category of " Wait, what, this is Zappa? You tricked me, you prick!" Arf arf!
1. Those flute interjections at the end were the main contribution to the album from late-arrival Joel Peskin 2. After dozens of listens I'm noticing the rhythm section more - Aynsley Dunbar and Alex Dmochowski 3. This was allegedly the third Zappa tune ever to be added to The Real Book (after Peaches and 20SG) 4. Obviously the track is dominated by its soloists - Frank, George Duke and Sal Marquez, and we should remember that the latter had at this point taken on the Underwood-esque role of "Frank's copyist and occasional arranging-assistant". Almost a year later he was dismissed mid-tour for the crime of arguing that the bandmembers should be paid a per diem. (But another story has it that he was carrying weed and getting the band together for a secret smoke, and when rumour reached Frank he started looking for an excuse to sack him. In which case, shades of 1972, 1975, 1978, and 1979!)
8th out of 70 while he was alive is hardly halfway through. well worth the study to know as much as possible about one of the genius’ of his time and beyond. one of my favorite tracks of his. that’s acoustic guitar with the wah wah on his solo.
You're on the right album, gotta do Cleetus Awreetus Awrightus , much more Zappa-like and this one is one of, if not my very favorite of his tracks (and that's from someone who has 37 of his albums.)
There are actually very FEW Zappa songs as beautiful as this one, but I'll try to give you a list, but most of these are not as beautiful as this one.. I mean... this is a REALLY beautiful song. Having said that... 1.Twenty Small Cigars 2.AyeBeSea 3.Lucy's seduction of a Bored Violinist and Postlude. 4. the orange county theme (used in many places) 5. the penultimate section of Little House I used to Live In 6. Outside Now Again (from the Pierre Boulez album) 7. the first half of Toads Of The Short Forest 8. Absolutely Free 9. Sad Jane 10. And I guess we should put Strictly Genteel on the list, huh guys? and 11. Amnerika There ya go John...11 other beautiful songs by Zappa

One of my go to lps when folk say they don't like Zappa. This for me is one of his best.
When I am stressed out I like to listen to this, it helps me relax in a big way.

Notice the drummer and how he masters this album. (Aynsley)
I love this, it's one of only two songs Frank was known to play his Martin D-18s acoustic on.
What was the 2nd
@@jessem470 The song Sleep Dirt.
@@timfeeley714-25 He also plays accoustic on the Stink Foot solo but I domn't know if it's the martin.
Away with the pathetic shit zappa 😂

@@Royale_with_Cheeze I think the piece "Sleep dirt" comes second to this.

To be able to hear great Zappa music without it going way out, way off, is a big treat. Thanks. This takes me back back back.

Frank Zappa can do anything musically
Duke's Rhodes work is amazing!
One of Frank's best songs.
Possibly the closest FZ ever go to conventional jazz without it being a joke.

Love Franks musik...❤
This track is well-named!
The fact that he wrote out every part by hand (except for the improvisational sections of course)
Best FZ Album in my collection, TOP 10 for most folks too...! Sleep Dirt is Second...
