You can also do this with a set of playing cards. I've found that just having a tool for the adjustment works really well (I'm someone who loses small plastic peices etc).
I just this week tried some new Shimano metal pads on rear and SwissStop organic pads on front and they both rub (bike is a couple of months old). Was going mad trying the usual calliper readjustment quick fix which wasnt working (it did once before the Shimano organic pads). Will def try this!
Same here. I'm guessing that just the little bit of extra space taken-up by the plastic is enough to make the difference, i.e., the caliper "bottoms out" wider than without the plastic. Just a guess!
Also old gift cards work great too. I just tried it and finally got my rear brake sorted with this trick. Thanks for the tip!
Smart thinking going to try this tmrw
I was lucky today as I didn't need to use your method but I'm sure one day I will need too, great no nonsense review cheers
Legend ! Great methodology. I’ll be using that in future.

If this doesn’t work either would you suspect mounts needing facing?
If plastic sheet is not available, cut the shims from beer can wall--works just as good ;-)
Do you still have to pull the brake lever after you have inserted your plastic guages?
Didn’t appear he did, but curious about that too.
Treve, No need to pull the lever with the gauge in place!!
What groupset are you using? And what rotors are these? Cheers!
Dura ace
*_Can this be done with mechanical disc brakes?_*
Yes!
I'm confused. What function does the plastic add that the traditional method of losing and breaking apparently lack?

Rim for road. disc for dirt. Never have issues with rubbing with rim!.
