I wish I had an art teacher like you in college in the 70s, 80s. I feel blessed though now that you are teaching us so we can all try with guidance. Thank you
Thank you for providing these videos. You present all information clearly and concisely. It’s hard to believe how much you pack into less than 10 minutes! I am learning watercolor but find that everything you teach applies. Many, many thanks.
Mr. Roberts. I've been a painter for decades. I don't want to say how many as I will date myself, but a long long time. I've recently stumbled across you by accident, subscribed to your channel and I just wanted to say that I wish I had had instructors like yourself in college. I would've save me so much heartache and feelings of failure. When I watch your videos it does two things. 1. I'm immediately relaxed and happier. 2. I'm immediately re-invigorated and ready to get back to the easel. THANK YOU.
These Tuesday videos are real gems. They are much more instructive than any of the tutorials I had in my first two years of art when I studied Architecture.
I agree, @Terry Cardinal. I've been "catching up" by watching your videos from the oldest to newest (except the few that I first watched after finding your channel). They are helping me immensely.
Oh my goodness, your videos are excellent, Im learning a great deal and hopefully I will see this translate to progress in my landscapes, Thank you again!
Thank you. I have Carlsen's book and I know his four values-but since I have no mountains where i live, I wondered where the four values would be without mountains and you gave me the answer. This will really make a difference in my work
Fun info and it made me reflect on how different light and shadows create felt vibration. I preferred the very first image you showed without cast shadow because it still had an interesting pattern of shapes but with more subtle color differences - and I am really attracted to the subtle differences in colors and shapes and not so much to dramatic strong contrasts 🙃🌷
At some point I want to do a video on how we enter landscapes. I have photos with say a line of hedges along the front of the picture. And they as surely block your entrance into the photo just as they would if you tried to walk through them. We need a pathway in. Glad you found the video helpful.
Hi Kevin, I did finish it and a week or two after the one you watched I showed the finished painting. I can't attach the image here unfortunately. But I liked it and it hangs over our mantle in our living room now.
@@IanRobertsMasteringComposition Thx, Ian, I found the finished version in your video two week after this one. it is beautiful ! Applying colors is always a challenge for most beginners like me, hope someday you can show us the right way of doing it.
Hi Ian Your compositional drawings are so good and clear, perhaps you could make a book on your drawings from photographs. Or an extended video just showing the best of them. Thanks so much, your teaching is really helpful. Keep well
Hi Stéphanie, it's a good idea to show photos and drawings from them. Or one week dong a video of photo to drawing to show the simplification. Tuck that idea away for a future week. Thanks.
Thank you, Ian, for another informational video. If Richard Diebenkorn were alive, I think he would find a kinship with you. The way you see space and break it in to interesting pieces that work together is quite beautiful. Did you ever study dynamic symmetry? Looking forward to seeing the finished piece.

I feel like I’m in a college art course with a great teacher. Thank you!
You are so welcome Terry.
Me too Terry. I have a fine art degree and never had a teacher/professor who was this thorough!
I’ll echo both of these. Seriously, thank you!

Never knew painting had so much science into it! ❤

Karen, that makes me happy to hear. Yes, and translation into your paintings is of course the point.
Thank you Ian.
Thanks, Ian. Another very helpful video. Would love to see your final painting, how you worked the edges and colors. Stay well.
Hi Alan. Will show the painting when I have it done. Glad you like the video.
Wow! This is the most helpful series of tutorials I’ve ever had! So much clearer than anything I took at school. Thank you very much!
Doing exactly the same @sharon stratis. It starts all to make sense now. Really thankful!

That's already a beauty! I hope that you share it more through the process and when it's finished.
Thank you Wanda. I've taken a couple of photos and can show the finished one too in an other video.
Thank you . It was very helpful to me.
I find myself thinking through compositional issues in my paintings like never before.
Ik! Me too
Love your information I get what you are saying about shadows I ready going to think about it when I take pics that I ma y paint ......
It makes all the difference to have go design in the photo that you use as reference. Helps a lot. All the best, Ian.
Why didn't I learn this is college? Never too late, I say. Thank you so much for your clear explanations.
Sir great tip
Thank you
You’re a beast!
I like the statement of “where would your feet go, as you enter”. Very helpful!

thanks alot
Very helpful! Now you make me want to see the finished painting. :-)
I'll post it when it's done.
Hi, Ian, like the way you paint, want to know if you completed the details of that painting, do you mind to show us? Thx!
