You're my painting Rabbi. Reminding me of the foundational basics, that as simple as they sound, seem to vanish like smoke when I try to create something. Creating balance between order, and creativity is like walking a tightrope for me. I was watching this video and all of the sudden, I saw it..it's a puzzle! Thanks , as always, for your guidance!
Ian I’m glad you’re back. Your videos are the real deal and as an artist myself your one of the few on RUclips I take seriously so 🙏 thank you from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
This is like my painting sermons. When I feel everything in my paintings are waxky and do not make sense, it just not working, you hold up the standard of Truth that gives me Hope. And more practice to do.. Thank- you for loving what you you do and sharing generously.
I enjoy how you can simplify a subject. It makes me see in a new way. I have used a suggestion you make to firstly draw an image, this enables you to create a desirable design aswell as showing light and dark contrasts. Thanks 😊 Anne
This is beautiful to watch. I love the resistance against adding detail and how that makes the picture. Where I live, we have a lot of forest I draw but I'm still limiting my choices of scene due to the fact that a lot has volumes of foliage that are very sparse with very thin foliage - I've not figured them out yet as they're quite intangible in terms of depth - At some stage I'll go in with the paints but I think I'll start with compositions that have a lot of solid elements but with just small patches of the thin, layered stuff that's problematic so far.
Thanks for the video. This is really great as a beginner like me woth 0 skill. That i can actually try and feel like ive acomplished something and learned some more foundatioms.
Excellent video and tutorial thank you so much! My biggest issue with Painting is that I’m always focused too much on detail and I want to get away from that so this is excellent.
That is hopefully the case that the painting is better than the photo. Partly because the photo is not taken for the sake of the photo itself (meaning it may not be a great photo on its own) but because of its potential as a painting. The language of painting and the language of photography are usually different one from the other.
There is hardly any white out in nature. White buildings in sunlight maybe gets close. So by toning the canvas you a removing that problem of putting each new color onto white and the huge unnatural contrast that creates. Also when you are finished if small spots of the toned canvas shows through they just tend to fall into the illusion. Spots of bare white canvas tend to jump and particularly when you photograph the image.
When I go out to paint today, I will remember - draw, structure, shapes- - foundation. And - which armature I am working with- or have you somewhat shifted this term from the book?
HI Annmarie, that's the idea. Actually I have changed the armature idea a bit. I mainly work with the idea of a horizontal and a vertical leading to the center of interest. A simpler idea. I found students were getting needlessly hung up on "what armature is this, an O and S? I find that new way of thinking about it is almost infinitely flexible and it engages the whole picture plane. All the best.

So well explained, you make look it easy. This is so clarifying. Thanks, Ian!
Glad it was helpful. Thank you!
good stuff Ian. The difference between looking and seeing.
Exactly. Thank you Mark
I like how simple and direct your paintings become. Nothing fancy or heady, just painted, kind of spartan.
I like that Nathan. Spartan. Of course it is at 12" x 12". At 30" x 30" it needs more modulation and nuance. All the best.
SOOO IMPORTANT & VALUABLE video, Ian!
thank you so much. All the best
You make it look easy, but I'll try. Uncomplicated description. Thank you.😊

ok i think it's a sign that i should painting again this week, cause it's been a while! 😭
I say yes to that!
Great composition demonstration. Your approach simplifies what can be such a complex matter.
Glad you enjoyed it.
This felt like a reminder of David Leffel's classes 🤍
Hi Angela, I've never seen one of David's classes, but the foundation is the foundation os it doesn't surprise if it is similar. All the best.

Nice one Ian, it fits in well with old thing in photography about squinting. Sadly today too many are only interested in how sharp a picture is.
That's true. 60 MP of what exactly.

Wow, amazing technique and video. Thank you! Question: Do you let the paint dry in-between each color? Thanks!
Glad you liked it. Whole painting done in one go, wet into wet.

Amazing

Ian can I ask why do you prepare the canvas with a tone? Thanks ❤ from Australia 🇦🇺

California. 📸
just add shapes and adjust the color as you go
You really need to think about how all those shapes sit on the canvas first. As a whole.
