Quick clarification/correction: when I'm referring to Javelin missiles, I'm referring to the British-Made surface-to-air missiles that are used with MANPADS (man-portable air defense systems). Rather than the better known American-made FGM-148 Javelin missiles which are anti-tank missiles, also frequently used in Ukraine but not on drones. I incorrectly use footage of FGM-148 missiles and their launchers @25:23, which is confusing. Other surface-to-air missiles systems are used in Ukraine, like the stinger (which is relatively cheap) and the S300 (which are not cheap). But neither are as cheap as the Shahed-136.

Ukraine doesn't have any british javelins, or at least there aren't any sources on britain exporting them. Which doesn't surprise me since the brits retired them like 2 decades ago. Only British manpad in ukraine is the starstreak system.

I did a couple deployments as the drone threat accelerated from nonexistent to everywhere. A buddy of mine was at a base in Syria several years ago and spotted a quad creeping the horizon, he kept reporting it but no one believed him. Drones hadn't been heard of at the time. During the Crimean conflict, a single drone with a grenade set off a chain reaction of explosions in an ammo dump, and ended up causing over a billion in damages (S1). That news popularized it with groups all over the world. Maduro was almost assassinated by two fixed wing kamikazes (S3).
Daesh adopted it from there and started actually training terrorists how to use them. (S2) Funnily enough, they used DJI drones almost exclusively, and that drone company had to deal with the worst PR nightmare imaginable when their product is being used very publicly to kill civilians and us troops. ISIS: SPONSORED BY DJI. They tried to geolock the GPS to seize up in threat regions, but ISIS would just wrap the GPS in tin foil to bypass it.
The battle of Mosul was the height of their popularity, when they were the most accessible and there were the fewest countermeasures in effect. They're kind of like gas attacks in world war one, super effective if they catch you off guard, but if you deploy good CM effectively you're safe. Paper beats rock.
We have a ton of measures in place and are trained on it pretty well now. While I can't say the name brands or limitations of the systems, I can talk more about personal experience and effectiveness in wargames and Iraq if anyone wants to know (S4). I used a handful of systems from (toss launch to pneumatic) as Blue Force and Op Force stateside, and watched people who knew a lot more than me.

Drones weren't cheap enough for anyone below medium wealth countries to use them en masse. A DJI Flamewheel DIY kit costed about 600 dollars with delivery in 2014, and it had much less range than today's latest DJI drones (that cost a bit more, but has more bang for buck than flamewheel). How many African or Afghan warlord had money and means of obtaining them in numbers that can be useful for combat? Attrition rates in Ukraine are about 1 drone lost after 5 to 6 flights, which is cost wise insane (this is according to data published yesterday, 30.11. by RUSU institute from UK). There really wasn't any war with wealthy and numerous enough sides to use them en masse for the world to see their effect. Armenia and Azeri war may have been closest to this, but it lasted too short, and its mountains terrain is less capable for drone warfare, as you would lose them more often (what would happen if you had to fly over a ridge, and you go with too strong wind? Batteries deplete faster, and if it lands somewhere that is hard to access - especially behind enemy lines - poof, 1000 bucks gone)...
But after Russo-Ukraine war, there is no way in hell that every fucking military of at least medium power will not get at least a drone per company, with a back up or two just in case. And I will not be surprised if prices for drones start to plummet, as states invest more in drone research, and thus someone figuring out cheaper manufacturing tehniques...

And Ukraine is now using more anti air ZU or Gepard machineguns. They are much cheaper than rockets. With drones a WW2 anti air is needed as they are as slow and loud as WW2 planes.

  • @iandoodle

Javelins are anti tank, there using stingers as the smallest form of missiles to shoot down drones, and everything up to larger Buk and sam to shoot down drones and missiles which are still much more expensive than the drone. Ukraine has now gotten a bit better and identifying them and attempting to take them out with cheaper less expensive radar aa like Gepards and shilkas, or just old school machine guns and autocannons. Your whole ukraine segment was great though, better job than most people at summarizing the whole drone war.

Personally, I believe it would have been more clear he was talking about the manpad if he had shown footage of other manpads currently in service, like starstreak, stinger, or piorun, rather than a similar system with vastly different capabilities that shares the same name.

It's changed from direct national conflict to "special military operations" and things like "we just pay them, their war crimes are not our war crimes."

12:04 love the on-point-ness. America has done really terrible things and them lecturing Russia about Ukraine seems pretty hypocritical. (This doesn’t defend what Russia‘s doing, though at all)

The Simpsons said it best in 1997:
_"The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall mountain. In any case, most actual fighting will be done by small robots, and as you go forth today remember your duty is clear: to build and maintain those robots."_
