Actually you don't have to run water for back pressure at all...simply turn on the water like normal with the valve closed and make sure the entire hose and tube are full of water. Invert tube in tank, get rid of any air bubbles in tube then go to the sink and open the valve. The back pressure will kick in on its own, no need to run water (not practical if you have a long extension it will take forever and waste loads of water).
Thank you so so much! I've been needing to do a water change on my Axolotl's 20gal (soon to be upgraded to 30gal) and I had no idea how to use the python. My parents knew but whenever I asked them to help me do a water change or if they could teach me how to use it they said "later". I've been watching other python how-to videos and I just didn't get it, and now I do! Thats so very much!
I've had a few mishaps with dossing with water conditioner ( by which I mean forgetting... Once for like ten minutes!) but I haven't seen any problems.
Having something called an “Eco-cloth” to “save paper towels” in the middle of an advert for a product that literally requires you to leave a tap running - wasting thousands of liters of water over the products lifetime - is the single most hypocritical thing I have ever seen. Theres a water crisis, we shouldn’t be cool with this!😂 Just start a siphon and put the end of that big ass tube outside. Water your plants with it or something. No need to have it constantly attached to a running tap🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for the video. I did my first water change/gravel vac with the python today. It was easier than anticipated. the hardest part is getting the temperature of the water right as your faucet can be a lil tricky to manuver. Although I was able to get it within 1 degree.
Sweet. This looks like a good buy. I was a little amused at the force of the water at the beginning of the refill process. Make sure all your plants are well rooted. Thanks for the video.
+John Shea - It's definitely a must-have, we've never looked back! We were pretty amused by the force of the water too-- the hook is best for larger aquariums like the one we worked on. It points straight down, so it may kick up gravel in shallower tanks. That said, it's a great product if you want a "hands-free" refill!
So I want to ask WHEN I drain water out from my tank, do I always have to keep the water by the sink running? I mean thats the way to create pressure so the water can be sucked down the tubing. Isnt it waste of water coming out from the sink faucet?
Seems like a great idea APART from that you have to have water running the whole time while emptying the tank, that's a LOT of wasted water... I've done a similar thing where I've connected a siphon which had a pump to a hose, and that hose I can just connect to the water faucet to refill the tank again. It's not pretty but it works.
okay, I finally, (after 2 years of hauling buckets of water) bought a Python water changer kit! Wow I am so happy I finally did it! It works great! My one hour water changes now take about 10 minutes! I was a little nervous to add the water back into the tank because I normally put the water conditioner into the bucket and then pour into the aquarium. So I put some of the conditioner in first as well as half way through the fill and then a little more near the end. I have a 120 gallon tank and this is going to save me a lot of time. Thanks Big Al's! Love your store!
I adopted a 55gal tank two years ago and it came with one of these and I had no idea how to use it and became super frustrated with it. Now I feel like a fool for not looking into!! I was using it backwards and didn't know it hooked up to the sink. Been muscling water buckets forever now. Ugh. I'm so excited to use it properly. Great video! Tanks a lot!! :)
If you're concerned about your water bill (depending on how close you are to a widow or door), you can run your Python outside and simply use gravity to move the water while cleaning your aquarium.
No you don't! I turn it on once quickly to get the suction, then turn it off. It will drain faster if you keep your tap running though, so if you need suction to do heavy-duty substrate cleaning I'd recommend it. With sand you probably wouldn't need a strong suction, but I use river rocks as my main substrate in my tank so I don't need to keep my tap running.
Depending on how close you are to a window or door, you can place the end of your Python outside (I tie mine to a post on the ront porch) and use gravity to move the water and drain the tank.
Avani is correct as long as the sink is below the water level of the tank (basically it just becomes a massive siphon). If the sink is above the tank water level, the water will just drain back to the tank
I just learned about this magical siphon . Im buying one ASAP. I used to siphon all the water into a giant 45 gallon trash can... then I would put an electric water pump into the trash can ... then drain everything down the drain . this is definitely worth a try, im tired of making water messes.
Big al’s is a great store... but I hate the employees, a lot of them are pretty unenthusiastic about their job. They get annoyed when I ask for help. And they assume I know nothing about fish-keeping. I was there with my friend and he picked out some kind of Molly and without even knowing his setup they didn’t let him buy it because they thought he was inexperienced. I was once picking out plants, and the employee was very annoyed and didn’t have any desire to be helping me. After he’d take out a plant I like, he’d sigh and say unenthusiastically if there are anymore, when I say yes I almost get an eye roll. And my first time I was there a couple of months ago I was wandering aimlessly and it was obvious but not one employee had any desire to ask anyone in the whole store if they needed assistance... people have to go out of their way to look for help from employees. The store is great but the employees make my shop their a lot worse.
I get my step ladder and put it next to my tank, then I put my container of water on the top of the step ladder so that its at a higher level than my tank and simply sython the water in using gravity, simple no cost method .
+lundisco - One point we did not touch on in the video-- but should have-- is that the Python uses 1 part tap water for every 7 parts aquarium water. This means that while draining your aquarium, you only use a fraction of tap water in comparison to the water you're draining from your tank. This, we believe, makes it more helpful than wasteful. Thanks for the feedback! We appreciate it!
You do not have to leave the water running when siphoning unless the sink is too high. You only need to do it until the water starts suctioning. I always fill using my kitchen sink, but it's too high to continue the pressure for suctioning, so I just drain into the toilet. My python is a set of 2 50 footers attached together, so it makes it super easy. edit: Also be very careful when filling. You cannot just casually turn on the sink to fill it with the valve closed at the siphon end. The pressure will straight up force the python off the sink or break your piping. (personal experience, I've had to replace the attachments more than once).
i have 2 turtles in a 60 gallon tank and this thing saves my back from lugging buckets of water back and forth every 3 weeks. Best investment i've made outside my canister filter with the UV light.
Thank you my mom is wanting one of these systems and I wanted to see how easy it was to hook up and run with the hook attachment this was just the kind of video I was hunting for. Thanks for being informative, easy to watch and not having annoying music overlaid lol
Good videoI picked up this water changing system a couple weeks ago...the cost was my only hesitation but after one use I was hooked. Like the tip on the extended gravel vacuum and will be looking to pick one up for my 90G Tank. My LFS did not have the water fill attachment and may have to look into that too but not in a rush. Now I use my bucket to store the Python...
Does this only work from the sink faucet? What if I need to fill my tank with salt water mix that I made in a barrel or bucket? Will this product work for that?
Using a barrel or Brute container, you would then need to attach the python to a pump to allow you to fill from this container to the aquarium. You need to ensure that the water is treated and mixed before adding to your aquarium, obviously.
What a waste of water...you leave the tap water on when you should have tirn off as soon as as the siphon start. And don't trhow the water of the tank like that...you can use it for plants or your garden...is full nitrats.
Yep! We have a selection of different faucet adaptors for the Python No Spill Clean & Fill system! Check them out here: www.bigalspets.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?limit=48&q=python+no+spill+clean+and+fill+adaptor
What if the water straight out of the cold is warmer (like 10 degrees Fahrenheit) than the water in my tank? PS. I live in Texas so during the summer our cold water out of the faucet is really warm.
I imagine it provides the suction to pull the water out of the tank. Would be hard to use gravity to siphon thru a 50 foot hose unless the tank was sitting 2 stories above your sink
Ok so I received my python and watching the videos I was able to clean my tank and refil in under 10 minutes. This product is Insane. Just add water conditioner after removal of partial. Also new tanks remember to cycle the tank. Man this is a game changer. Upgrading to 125 gal from 55 gal and now looking forward to it.
I'm wanting to buy one of these, and for years I almost did,but I always wondered about the whole water conditioner issue, how it would be added to the tank,if there was a reservoir on the python to add it, I really had no idea how it worked. As many people that rave about it, I assume that the method they show here, adding conditioner as it fills, that this is safe, but still I worry. I was always told that you had to add water conditioner before you add any fresh water to the aquarium, any time you fill a bucket you had to add conditioner before the bucket of water is added to the aquarium, and this had to be repeated with every bucket of water. If I knew we could do it this way I would have just added the appropriate amount to the aquarium as soon as I drained enough water so I wouldnt have to beat myself up whether I forgot to add conditioner to a bucket of water when it usually takes about 15 buckets of water to fill mine back up. It's so easy to forget one time and I've definitely worried myself sick a few times trying to remember if I forgot one time,so I'd panic and dump several capfuls just in case.
Would any substrate in the tank be fine? I’m getting an aquarium of my own and I don’t know what kind substrate would be best for the python. I would prefer to get fine gravel or sand but I don’t want the python to suck that stuff up
Shame dosing chlorine and chloramine directly to the tank not sure how I feel doing that even with Prime waiting for it In the tank until it mixes surely has to have negative effect on the fish and live stock esp more sensitive species and harm some bb while running through the filter besides this big factor it looks the goods using the old water bed pump can see how it can save time on very hardy fish Keen for reply about the chlorine and chloramine
SEACHEM recommends using a Full Tank Dose of Prime (prior to turning on water flow) when using a hose to refill the tank, even with partial Water Changes. So dose as if you are filling an Empty Tank. Treatment with Prime is almost instantaneous in Its effect.
If you have center braces like me youll want to start in the center and tuck the hose under the brace otherwise youll have to empty the air and water out and start again.
It isn't necessary to keep it on the entire time, you just have to turn it on at the beginning to create a suction. After that, you can turn it off. However, keeping the tap on creates a stronger suction so it drains tanks faster and is more effective at cleaning the substrate.
You can also buy a cheap submersible pump for less than $20 from like Amazon or maybe even Big Al's that way you don't need to have the run water to drain your tank. Saves on your water bill & more environmentally friendly. That's how I use my Python & I love it.
This is exactly what I was thinking about. The system seems great, but running the water the entire time definitely makes the product a "no" as-is. How would I use it to suck up the dirty sand/gravel though, with the pump submerged, without clogging it?
A M I've never had an issue with clogging. I have the Ecoplus submersible pump from Amazon & hook up the Python to it first to drain the tank to whatever level I need for that water change. Once drained I remove the pump & use the Python as intended to vacuum the sand & fill the tank back up. Hope that helps.
As someone who has disabilities and mobility issues I am always looking for an easier way to do my water change but I don’t think I could buy this in good conscience because of all the wasted water! That is a huge amount of clean water going down the drain to get the suction to clean the gravel/empty the tank (and that’s just one small water change on one small tank!! Imagine the waste for someone with multiple huge tanks!) Sorry guys, I can see the benefits but that waste of clean water is horrendous. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Shit a brick. Why is everybody getting out of their pram over tap water. I've used tap water in my tank for 20 years with no problem. As long as you use tap safe there will be no problem. Chill out guys!!!
I find the need to keep the faucet running during draining an issue. I don't want to waste water to drain water. Maybe its due to lenght of the hose or it going down and then back up to the sink or i'm just using it wrong.
I have a sprayer-style kitchen faucet. Is there any way for this to work with that? It looks great! We are upgrading to a bigger tank and this would be so much better than what we’ve been using for our little tank.
So while suctioning, you are wasting as much if not more water compared to the water coming out of the tank. And then using more water to fill up the tank again? So basically if you drain your tank half way, you are using up a whole tank of water each time...
5 лет назад
i couldn't watch all of it cuz his voice was doing my head in which was so fucking annoying. besides, here in the uk, our taps are different!! we haven't got that bit at the bottom that unscrews, where the water comes out of the tap.
It can certainly remove the water, but you can't refill a saltwater tank with straight tap water - needs to be premixed with synthetic marine salt well before hand.
Im almost going to buy it but saw my water tap doesn't have screws or moth cap like this. It is kitchen tap which has shower and wire with it. Give me solution please what I can do now if I still buy it. Pleeeeeeease
I like my method better, then again I only have a 30 gallon tank and 5 Tetras with no plants. I do not like using hot water for anything. I have a brand new new, never been used for anything else 5 gallon pail. I fill with cold water the day before my water change and put in a 5 gallon water heater to bring the temperature to optimal. I also add the water conditioner there and it eliminates all chloramine before my fish ever get that water. I use a new pitcher I bought at the dollar store to fill the tank with and a second pail to drain the tank and clean the gravel. my oldest fish is 4 and a half years old so I must be doing something right.
I agree, but it is a different story when you get a 75 gallon tank, which I just upgraded to and had to deal with carrig multiple 5 gallon buckets. Tropical fish need water at temperature of ~ 75 degrees...
I've hauled 5g Homer buckets around for years changing water. This video almost has me convinced to switch, especially because I'm doing EI-method dry ferts on my 60g, and that specifies a weekly 50% water change. My only reservation continues to be about water treatment- I can add Seachem Prime to the bucket I just filled and be positive I've reacted/outgassed all the Cl- and choloramines. The Python method is less precise.
+John Daly a cheaper way is go to your local hartdware store HD Lowes etc. and get the hose and make it urself. I fill up with a 5gl empty water bottle to dose the tap water before I put it in the tank. But using the hose to empty the tank out is much easier.

If ur sink is higher then the tank like a floor above you gotta turn on the hot water and it will suck it out I cant siphon my tube because I need the 75ft one
What about needing to condition the water that you’re putting back into the tank? I’ve heard you need to mix it first then pour? I’m still learning I’ve had many fish die in the process it’s breaking my heart I’m trying to learn as much as possible to have them safely! 😭
I love the emphasis on bucket spilling and shaking when filling up the tank. It really captures the moment. :)
Hahaha thanks! We knew everyone could relate...
You should see the pictures on the python package. It's pretty funny as well.

I imagine it provides the suction to pull the water out of the tank. Would be hard to use gravity to siphon thru a 50 foot hose unless the tank was sitting 2 stories above your sink
crimsontide1980 have you ever thought of how a sewer works for miles?
It goes down hill - gravity ...
You forgot to get the inner rubber band thing for the copper adapter
my aquariums are right next to a sink. :>
Picked mine up today... GOD BLESS THIS THING
Awesome video. It definitely clear all my questions about the python .
Does a new tank have little bubbles I just filled my 55 gallon tank and it have little bubbles is that nominal.
I need this in my life!!I have to do water changes for a 3.5 gallon and I struggle with that!😭😂
Wow week
Would any substrate in the tank be fine? I’m getting an aquarium of my own and I don’t know what kind substrate would be best for the python. I would prefer to get fine gravel or sand but I don’t want the python to suck that stuff up
what can i do if my tap doesnt have that thing where i can attach the python to?
i want subscribers now!! ! a nice big clamp would be a solution
Shame dosing chlorine and chloramine directly to the tank not sure how I feel doing that even with Prime waiting for it In the tank until it mixes surely has to have negative effect on the fish and live stock esp more sensitive species and harm some bb while running through the filter besides this big factor it looks the goods using the old water bed pump can see how it can save time on very hardy fish
Keen for reply about the chlorine and chloramine
SEACHEM recommends using a Full Tank Dose of Prime (prior to turning on water flow) when using a hose to refill the tank, even with partial Water Changes.
So dose as if you are filling an Empty Tank.
Treatment with Prime is almost instantaneous in Its effect.
How to connect python on pull down spray kitchen tap
By unscrewing the spray head and using the exposed threads.
Better make sure u get the temp right !!! So many ways this thing can screw up ur tank. No thanks ...
Agree😯
Great product. I have a 20 46 and just started a 75 discus tank. Save so much time. Watched video and directions were spot on. Highly recommend.
If you have center braces like me youll want to start in the center and tuck the hose under the brace otherwise youll have to empty the air and water out and start again.
waste a lot of tap water while draining.
It isn't necessary to keep it on the entire time, you just have to turn it on at the beginning to create a suction. After that, you can turn it off. However, keeping the tap on creates a stronger suction so it drains tanks faster and is more effective at cleaning the substrate.
Doesn’t the pressure build up in the tubing when you turn on the water but the end is closed
Hope that helps.
hi, I have multiple tanks. how do I keep from cross contamination.
Jena Tucker rinse them out
THIS was/is my concern as well! I think one would need to sterilize the equipment between tanks ...
Rinse with Hot Water in your bathtub. Catch water out of Bath Spout with gravel tube.
Imagine the waste for someone with multiple huge tanks!)
Sorry guys, I can see the benefits but that waste of clean water is horrendous. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
you do not sell outside the US ??
We also sell in Canada at www.BigAlsPets.ca, or in one of our 15 Canadian Big Al's Supercentres!
Shit a brick. Why is everybody getting out of their pram over tap water. I've used tap water in my tank for 20 years with no problem. As long as you use tap safe there will be no problem. Chill out guys!!!
If you close the faucet after the syphoning stars will the water keep flowing out? that way there is no waste of water.
I just got the squeeze siphon starter. How do I attach it to my phyton?
You forgot rubber o ring on the sink lol great video👍🏻👍🏻
I find the need to keep the faucet running during draining an issue. I don't want to waste water to drain water. Maybe its due to lenght of the hose or it going down and then back up to the sink or i'm just using it wrong.
what if the threading on faucet is on the inside? do you have brass adapter for this application?
I have a sprayer-style kitchen faucet. Is there any way for this to work with that? It looks great! We are upgrading to a bigger tank and this would be so much better than what we’ve been using for our little tank.
Might be able to unscrew the Spray Head from its own hose and then attach Python.
So while suctioning, you are wasting as much if not more water compared to the water coming out of the tank. And then using more water to fill up the tank again? So basically if you drain your tank half way, you are using up a whole tank of water each time...
i couldn't watch all of it cuz his voice was doing my head in which was so fucking annoying. besides, here in the uk, our taps are different!! we haven't got that bit at the bottom that unscrews, where the water comes out of the tap.
Does the hook come standard with this?
Can this also work with saltwater tanks? Removing the water I see will be the same, but how about filling it back up?
It can certainly remove the water, but you can't refill a saltwater tank with straight tap water - needs to be premixed with synthetic marine salt well before hand.
Im almost going to buy it but saw my water tap doesn't have screws or moth cap like this. It is kitchen tap which has shower and wire with it. Give me solution please what I can do now if I still buy it. Pleeeeeeease
I just received my python kit and it's not sucking water out or draining it why kinda frustrated???😖😫😖😖
With tap running, it waste too much water.
I like having my treated water ready to go THEN add it to the tank.
Dum way to psiphon out the water while clean water goes waste like seriously... Thumbs down for this 😒
I want one, this is perfect for a wheelchair user. No lifting heavy buckets. Thanks for sowi g me this
Put a trailer on it lol
Literally the best invention
how much and can you ship it?
im tired from sucking the water out using the hose
Both questions depend on where you're located! If you're in either the US or Canada and you order off our online store, we can definitely ship it to you! Check out the variety of Pythons here (if you're in Canada, don't forget to click the "Shopping From Canada" link at the very top of the website): www.bigalspets.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=python+no+spill+clean+and+spill
you use tap water ?
Tap Water then you add Tap Water Conditioner, Stress Coat(Zyme). If you have live plants you can also add CO2 Booster Etcs.
Man I need one of those I have 75gallon look easy to use
