    I've never liked doing bench press at all. I feel like it never hits my chest the right way. The pushup, however, has a very special place in my heart. I started working out at fourteen doing pushups in my room, and it gave me fairly good results and helped me build a foundation to grow my chest. I'd always prefer a pushup instead of bench.

    Most calisthenic channels tend to not tell the truth about weights just to encourage people to do calisthenics, this channel is different.

    As a huge guy (even when in the best shape I can be at around 275lbs) I find pushups completely adequate. They carry over to being able to bench almost my own bodyweight as a max bench right away without much prep.
    Enjoying the hell out of high rep bodyweight squats too. Doing 500 every few days carried over to my weighted squats past my bodyweight right away.
    I think the larger you are, the greater the benefit.

    • @misterx8501
      @misterx8501 7 лет назад +87

      ProductionGodRa you choose. They try to be democratic because if they'll say that push ups are more effective as they do calistenics as a main duscipline, bench pressers will come and compare as always. The reality is that many people think that bench press is more brutal than push up (as you push a huge weight aka a measurement of "real man") without thinking about the benefits of both-push ups and bench press. They discuss the pros and cons of each so the chose is behind you.

    • @rlburton
      @rlburton 7 лет назад +52

      Well, it depends on what kind of pushup you're doing. A one-handed pushup with your feet raised by ~1m is equivalent to a 180-lb guy pressing a 140-lb dumbell with one hand. It's crazy high load, and it also works tons of stabilizers and backup muscles in unison with each other that a bench press doesn't even touch. Also 100 times safer, and you can do them anywhere any time. I think there's no contest.
      I think that the benefit of the bench press over advanced pushups is mainly psychological; you're given one simple number "how much you bench?" that you can easily track and easily see increase over time, and that gives you the motivation to train. No problem there; if that gets you to the gym, go for it.

    • @rodneynehring1782
      @rodneynehring1782 7 лет назад +6

    Push ups can be really effective if you do them correctly in proper full range of motion, adding weight, or with different hand position variations.
    Speaking from experience with just doing push ups for 3-4 years as my main chest workout (along with dips) I guarantee you'd still be able to build a good ass chiseled chest with a basic bodyweight movement and don't always need to rely on a bench press unless you're a powerlifter, strongman or other if you're preferably like the barbell. Do them with gymnastic rings especially? They'll hit hard due to forcing yourself to stay balance

    I added bench work and found my pushups improved. My stamina and desire to bang out reps randomly has greatly improved. I'm limited in weight I can use safely on the bench since I lift alone. Having a partner 2-3x week would do wonders for me. I would say this: if you bench M/W/F, use pushups (even 10 well executed ones) as warm-up/stretch and after lifting (if you have anything left), then alternating days (T/Th/Sat-Sun) add concentrated push-up routine (e.g. 100: 30, 25, 20, 15, 10).

    I stopped completely with weights after "discovering" the calisthenics world, one of the reasons being it's so much more fun, so much more variation. My favourite tool is gymnastic rings, the amount of exercises possible are really huge, all my training days are different now, when I did weights, I just had 3 or 4 different training programs that I rotated that didn't change too much

    To anyone who wants to increase the intensity of the pushup slowly like you would with a bench press, id recommend -
    First make sure you can do 25 pushups one set before you try to increase intensity
    Secondly increase intensity by placing a block under each of your arms and/or under your legs. Keep increasing the height of the boxes and try to go as low as possible. This will increase your range of motion slowly

  • @AbeAyBay
    @AbeAyBay 5 лет назад +2

    An easier synopsis is if you bench press around your body weight, pushups will be effective for you.
    If you have gotten much stronger in your years of training, pushups will not provide an adequate workout and can regress your bench numbers.
    Adding to this, if you have reached this advanced point in your training, you likely have put on more weight and strain on your body.
    I find pushups to be an unnecessary strain on my wrists, shoulders and tendons at this point in my career. However, I did start with just pushups and recommend that to anyone starting out. Master your body weight first before moving into weights. It will lay a great foundation and control.

      They actually advocate a healthy mix of weight training and calisthenics in other videos, but with a primary focus on calisthenics. While calisthenics makes for an accessible and dynamic workout, training with free weights is good to build up things that calisthenics misses such as developing legs doing loaded squats.

  • @hvymettle
    @hvymettle 5 лет назад +1

    A bench press isolates chest, triceps, and delts. I find the triceps and delts fatigue before pecs are affected, limiting the benefit to pec development. The lower back also tends to arch, creating strain. Push ups include a plank which enlists more muscles overall to stabilize the body. While you won't get the same muscle gains from push ups compared to bench presses, you can do them anywhere with no equipment and will get great muscle tone.

  • @rumba2634
    @rumba2634 5 лет назад +3

    I like the content, well explained. I disagree with the breathing you mentioned. Whenever you do a compound excercice like benchpress, squat, deadlift etc you take a deep breath, as deep as you can, hold it in, brace and do the reps you need to do. Thats how you protect yourself, and gives you the ability to do it with more weight.
    By breathing in deep and bracing you make your body work as a cilinder full of air wich is stable. If you release that air, you become an empty cilinder wich is weaker and unstable, thus more prone for injury.

  • @weighttrainingguide
    @weighttrainingguide 7 лет назад +14

    The push-up is a much better all-round exercise than the bench press. It's great for developing functional strength and core stability, as well as activating and developing the chest, anterior delts, and triceps. However, unless you use extra weight, the amount of muscle that you can build with push-ups is very limited when compared with the bench press. You cannot build a giant chest with push-ups without using extra weight. I know because I used to do 750 push-ups per workout in sets of 150. My chest got big, but then it just stopped growing until I started to hit the bench. My best advice is to superset the bench press and push-up. In other words, as soon as you finish your bench press, hit the floor for some push-ups until it burns.

    • @weighttrainingguide
      @weighttrainingguide 7 лет назад +8

      Functional strength is the kind of strength that is useful outside of the gym. Functional exercises, such as the squat, lunge, pull-up, and push-up, give you functional strength. The push-up is more functional than the bench press because it gets your core much more involved, which is why I said that it's an all-round better exercise than the bench press. However, you can build much more mass with the bench press.

    • @weighttrainingguide
      @weighttrainingguide 7 лет назад +1

      The bench press isn't a functional exercise; the push-up is. You engage your chest every time you flex, horizontally flex, and horizontally adduct your shoulders. In other words, you engage it all day. The push-up engages your core MUCH more than does the bench press. The bench press hardly engages your core.

    • @weighttrainingguide
      @weighttrainingguide 7 лет назад

      Your "core" doesn't mean your abs! They're different things. Also, you don't have to go heavy with the push-up for it to engage your core. In fact, the push-up engages not just the chest and core but much more of the body than does the bench press. The target is of course your sternal pectoralis major. The synergists are your clavicular pectoralis major, anterior deltoid, triceps brachii, and the short head of your biceps brachii. Another reason that the push-up is better than the bench press is that it works your serratus anterior more, which is important for shoulder health and mobility. In short, if you understand how the body functions, the push-up is a MUCH better all-round exercise than the bench press. As I suggested in my first comment, do them both to get the benefits of both. Thanks for the conversation! Must get back to work now.

      The scapula is a part of the shoulder. It's the shoulder blade. Actually, the lower back is worked. The spinal erector muscles act as stabilizers. Other important stabilizers include your abs, obliques, and quads. The push-up is also better than the bench press at improving your standing push force, which is important for athleticism, and another argument in favor of its being more functional. As I keep saying, use them both to get the benefits of both. ;-)

    I have multiple levels of resistance bands that I use during my push-up pyramid workout. Given that I have 3 duplicate sets [of the same bands] and each set has 5 different bands of differing resistance, there are a plethora of permutations possible when using 2-3 bands at once. I have as much variety as I’d have in a weightroom with various weight plates and dumbbells. With that said, this is probably my favorite fitness channel on RUclips. You guys are LEGIT.

    Totally different exercises. But many people can't do bench press because of their elbows. Most people don't realize that to build chest muscle, you have to do incline bench press. Flats work your shoulders and triceps to much.

    Excellent video! Really concise and to the point! :-) I would like to add one point about the progression on one arm push-ups:
    The one arm push-up becomes harder the closer your legs are together. This actually makes for a good way of progressing difficulty. I personally start at a position, where I touch my heel to my knee pit and then extend both legs. This is just to have a reproducible start position. From there I move my feet outwards or inwards by one 'foot-width' at a time to adjust the difficulty. You can also move one foot on one side only and adjust the angle of your body to include finer steps.

    One very effective resistance variation with push ups was overlooked: feet elevation.
    When you elevate your feet, the load becomes shifted towards your head. Theoretically, you can elevate all the way up to doing handstand push ups by placing feet on a wall.
    Although, to do so, the movement shifts from "bench press" to "overhead press".
    I have done many thousands of push ups between two chairs for greater depth of movement and used a third chair for my feet with an object to elevate my feet further.
    Tip for frequent travelers: specify a hotel room with 2 double beds rather than 1 king size bed. You'll usually find those rooms will have at least 2 chairs in them. Great for doing push ups as well as Lat Dips.

      The human flag is fairly simple. You just do it how you think you would. Grab a straight object which you can wrap your hands around, and use your body to push yourself horizontally. If what you are asking for is an "easy" way to do a human flag, then, sorry, but there is no way. A human flag involves a massive amount of arm, chest, core, leg, and grip strength, and it is pretty much impossible unless you are extremely light or you have been doing calisthenics for years.

    Good video, but the answer to any of these debates is always that it depends on your goals and that whichever you decide is "better" for those goals, it should be supported by the other. In particular, the pushup provides a functional pattern to judge the effectiveness of your bench press and/or identify developing imbalances.
    The only "which is better?" Debate that I feel has a pretty clear answer is that free weights and body weight are both better than machines (except the cable pulley) for 95% of people. In the cases where machines have benefits, they should usually be seen as a phase. rehabbing an injured joint. Putting finishing touches on a body building regimen. Learning basic muscle recruitment cues. Overcoming a strength imbalance.
    Aside from that, strength training should be seen first as one discipline, in which weighted and unweighted exercises support each other.

Either way, I honestly don't thing that anyone doing calisthenics would just focus on push ups for muscle mass or even strength. In my opinion the Bech Press is superior in every way.
    The fact that makes this true is because you can't add as much resistance doing Push Ups as you can add when you have a bar. Volume and Intensity training are key to getting stronger and bigger. When you do Calisthenics you're limited in terms of adding weights specially when you're talking about Push Ups. Sure you can do different variations and add some resistance to it but it doesn't compare to what you can do with a bar. In order to get bigger you need to get stronger and since you're limited in weights you have to do High Volume. There's no way high volume only will give you the potencial to get the same results as doing maximum effort method combined with repetition method.
    If you wanna get the best results possible and still do Calisthenics as your main style of training you should mix it with weighted training and focusing on squats and deadlifts to build up posterior chain and legs. Not to mention the traps being underdeveloped by doing Calisthenics only and that muscle group plays a huge feature when it comes to look big.

      Igor Veloso I think you are wrong...training for strenght Is diferent than training for mass my friend....the apply of weight makes you bigger and stronger...but weight Is not the only variable for muscle mass, In fact If you want muscle mass the best variable Is how much time under tension you can endure in a set . Lets supose you benchpress 60kg(30kg each side) with a tempo 1x2x1x2 most probably thats easy because you are resting between executions....try doing (40kg/50kg) with a tempo 4x0x4x0 that s time under tension.
      Im a Bodybuilder and admire calisthenics , acording to what I just wrote above...The aplication for muscle mass can be made In calisthenics. But still...I never done it.
      Yet nice discussion.
